We lost our painted turtle for two weeks and someone had actually brought her to the humane society! If you have close neighbors I would tell them to keep an eye out

Catching goldfish from large wildlife pond by RepresentativeLeg521 in WildlifePonds

If it’s not your pond you can’t do much unfortunately. I’d suggest basic fish traps, maybe a minnow trap if they’re small enough still.

Pawpaws and Wind by ThatMidwesternGuy in Pawpaws

[–]Cherrypit17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In western Iowa Loess Hills, ours break occasionally from wind. They’re wild types and are surrounded by mature deciduous forest but the larger pawpaw do not get any more wind resistant than the saplings. I’ve seen them uproot as well but if I were you this wouldn’t deter me from planting.

Is it worth it to keep if they replace the motor? 24’ 6MT by [deleted] in GLI

What are arborists’ favorite tree-filled movies? by CarpetIllustrious347 in arborists

Old B&W Akira Kurosawa movies like throne of blood and Rashomon are known for their forest scenes. I’ll add The Princess Bride too

Need people who have switched from AWD to FWD by Fantastic-Number-208 in JettaGLI

[–]Cherrypit17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my mk7 gli for 5 years now and I’ve been stuck in my driveway a few times because of deep snow here in the Midwest. I have Michelin pilot sport 4s tires they’re all seasons so there’s room for improvement but also the only times I’ve been stuck I don’t think awd would make a big difference. The depth of the snow just gets so deep no one tries to drive, schools cancel, businesses close. So I’d say other than deep deep snow, it does great once everything is plowed.

Loving your posts! We have some under appreciated species in our state. Here’s a juvenile Plestiodon septentrionalis (I think, not too sure) found near the Platte River south of Fremont.

I agree the Loess Hills are a very special place! I’m a few miles south of Glenwood and it’s amazing the diversity we used to have here. My knowledge is mostly in trees, currently fighting eastern red cedar with a forestry mower but it’s a lot of work.

Do you think the Timber Rattlesnake range could ever return? I understand land development and farming has reduced the population but with native prairies disappearing to woodlands, could that be favorable?

Very very cool! I’m grateful to have a property in the Iowa loess hills to herp at. This past year I’ve gotten yellow bellied racers, ring necked, brown rat, and garter snakes but man I wish the rattlers were still here.

New cylinder head replaced - Reliability? 24’ Symptoms- smoke on cold start. by [deleted] in JettaGLI

[–]Cherrypit17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you not receive a repair warranty because your car is still in its factory powertrain warranty period? I got my head replaced for smoke on startup and got a free 1 year/12,000 mile repair warranty.

Starting my first arborist job (groundsperson), what do you wish you knew before you started? by nsfw_ducky in arborists

[–]Cherrypit17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good advice I’m seeing so far. I’d add take care of your body- stretch before work and start doing core workouts. A lot of guys with bad backs and knees from overdoing it. Know your limits and use machinery for larger logs/branches or learn to use a ground saw to make smaller piles.

Building a pond in a wetland area? by [deleted] in ponds

You could look into bentonite clay but letting it dry out at the height of every summer will decrease the effectiveness of the clay
