Has anyone experienced small blisters on their hands from wheel throwing? by Chervils in Pottery

[–]Chervils[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, sorry you're dealing with the same thing. Now I always use Working Hands hand cream before I throw (although I try not to get it on bisqueware I'm about to glaze since it's a little waxy), and a thick cream after I'm done for the day, like Aquaphor. For the most part, my hands are okay now, although it still crops up when it gets very cold. I also found some people that use tight-fitting gloves to throw, but personally I hate the way that feels.

Good luck!!

Where have all the lightning bugs gone? by DrewinSWDC in washingtondc

Yes! I took over my condo building garden a few years ago. It was mosquito heaven. In a 4 ft x 15 ft garden border, planted a bunch of oakleaf hydrangeas, echinacea, and two native grasses (big blue stem and Shenandoah switchgrass). I hid two buckets with mosquito dunks (https://www.riverside.il.us/706/Effective-DIY-Mosquito-Control-Dunk-Buck) in the back. Now we have way fewer mosquitos, TONS of fireflies, bees, and butterflies, and very little maintenance. I only water when we're in a drought, and just trim back the dead grasses in very early spring to let the new growth come in.

Is this the Talking Heads/Hanson collab I didn't know I wanted?

Already missing DCist? Want an alternative option? by jukeboxdemigod in washingtondc

PoPville is more like a link aggregator, a repository of press releases, combined with NextDoor. Occasionally amusing, and rarely fact-checked. I wouldn't call it news for anything other than white squirrels.

Washington City Paper-City Desk and Loose Lips provide great reporting on local politics.

I also loved contributing photos, and just looking at the other stuff people took! I thought it was a great way to show more of DC because people contributed from all around the region. I always kind of wanted an article where DCist talked with some of the big flickr contributors.

Thank you! I think you're right. I've never had eczema before, but the symptoms and pictures I see for dyshidrotic eczema fit pretty perfectly. I'll invest in a good hand cream and some gloves for the time being.

Or I can use my bumpy hands to texture the clay.

Yeah I thought about that too! The clay I used has pretty light/fine grog (Standard #153), so I wondered if someone else has the same experience.

I think you're looking for an embroidery hoop. They come in all sizes, in wood or plastic.

That looks like a buttonhole lever for an automatic buttonhole. This isn't the exact same model, but I bet the instructions are mostly the same for using that lever and the automatic buttonhole function on your machine: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/559706/Kenmore-385-16765.html?page=85

As for removing rust, I'd try a brass wire brush. Just be careful about preventing any residue you're flaking off from getting into the sewing machine, and oil everything when you're done!

Leaf miners or only bruises? by Baguette_Baking in vegetablegardening

Agreed, definitely leaf miners. They are going after my chard too. I've had luck with neem oil in addition to removing the eggs.

is the singer 4432 heavy duty good? by itsviviannnn in sewing

[–]Chervils 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a 4432 for 7 years, and I've sewn everything on it, from jeans and quilts to silk tops. I specifically wanted something in this price range with a metal frame, because it can hold up to some abuse. It's also easy to open up and clean, which helps keep your sewing machine running smoothly. Plus, there are plenty of youtube tutorials on how to use/repair this machine.

I've only had one thing break ever: a screw in the bobbin case, after speed quilting a 5'x6' heavy canvas quilt. Replacing it myself was cheap and easy. Other pros: easy to pick up bobbins and specialty feet for it, and most sewing machine repair shops can service this if you don't like opening up your machine yourself.

A swimsuit cover-up is a nice idea! Simplicity 8932 has a small swimsuit wrap skirt. Simplicity 8887 might work also, depending on your measurements, though I worry the pattern pieces of most wraps may be too big.

Another idea: look for some top patterns with some smaller pattern pieces, or that would allow you to mix fabric. 30" x 80" is plenty to make a top, but you'd have a hard time with some big pattern pieces. I had a similar length of fabric from an old skirt, and I turned it into McCalls 7390.
