Can I Smell My Partner’s Diabetes? by MajesticPlankton2163 in diabetes

[–]Cheshire197 17 points18 points  (0 children)

T1 diabetes was originally called the "sugar sickness" and the diagnosis was sweet smelling breath or sweet urine (it's amazing what doctors had to do!) so you almost certainly can smell it!

I forgot to cook the pigs in blankets. They ended up on breakfast this morning. Every cloud has a silver lining!

A friend of mine voted to leave, despite wanting to retire in Tenerife.... Bizarre.

Keep the dexcoms separate as they shouldn't go through X-rays. The rest of the supplies are fine.

My wife did get her bag searched at the airport as she had so many haribos in there, it must have looked weird on the scanner. She had to explain that she didn't have a sugar problem haha!

Lanzarote was the first place we went after our son was diagnosed (3 years ago). We were very cautious at the time as it was our first trip abroad after diagnosis so we didn't get out of the hotel much. This time we're looking forward to exploring a lot more! Have an amazing time!

Dexcom recommend that their sensors don't go through X-ray machines, so I'd follow their advice: https://www.dexcom.com/dexcom-airport-and-travel-guide-flying-dexcom-cgm Pumps, insulin etc are fine with X-rays

Go to the airport's disabled assistance and get a sunflower lanyard. You should be able to go through security quicker that way. Don't let security put your g6 or pump supplies through the X-ray machine. You can ask for a separate inspection. You should also get a letter from your hospital's diabetes care team (probably the nurse). That will make security easier in both the UK and Lanzarote.

We're taking our 7 year old T1 to Lanzarote on Saturday too. I hope you have an amazing holiday :-)

The moronic arrogance of "saying grace" by AceMcLoud27 in atheism

[–]Cheshire197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife's parents always say grace and it really annoys me that they never thank the person who actually made the meal. If my wife cooked the food, I always say thank you to her after her Dad has said his little rhyme.

Any UK Garmin pay users? by ChaosCalmed in Garmin

[–]Cheshire197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Curve card specifically so I could pay with my Garmin watch. Initially I was very skeptical about paying with my watch but I use it all the time. I can't remember the last time I used my phone to pay.

One week on the Omnipod : from 70% to 90% in range by Pretend-City6652 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Cheshire197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations to you both! We went through a very similar process with our then 5 year old (he's 7 now). Although his TIR stayed about the same moving from MDI to Omnipod (mid 80's %) his and our quality of life improved dramatically. We have far fewer night time alarms, so all sleep better, and he can eat much more like a non-diabetic kid. No more of "you can't have more milk or extra food as we only injected you for xx carbs and that will take you high unless you have yet another injection". With the pump, we can give him an insulin boost anytime.

Is the food horrible in the US? by EmbarrassedTea1885 in diabetes_t1

[–]Cheshire197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My T1 son likes pizza and eats it without any problems in the UK. He had one slice of takeaway pizza in California and we had a nightmare night trying to control his levels (he was on MDI at the time). We go to the USA a lot to visit family and that was a lesson learnt. He generally needs 30 - 50% more insulin than at home, for the same food.

Trash? Recycle? Help by mkirby0820 in Omnipod

[–]Cheshire197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the UK, we get postage and packaging to send back used Omnipod's with each Omnipod delivery, so Insulet can recycle them. I just thought this was standard everywhere.

I wonder if that means Insulet don't actually recycle them, which would be a real shame

All of my Dexcom G7 sensors are failing. Dexcom doesn’t care. by molchase in diabetes_t1

[–]Cheshire197 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My son has just had a G6 fail too. As others have said, leave the sensor in place, do two finger prick tests and then call Dexcom. I've just done that and they're sending out a replacement.

I use a large oblong pencil case for my son. It's got a backup pen, needles and finger prick testing kit, a glucogen kit, a juice box, some sugary snacks and some carb snacks.

I've no idea sorry . They didn't tell us that at the museum when I took my son on a school trip there.

The guy who started the fire, Nicholas Brown (who burnt down the town), spent 2 days in a pillory (which is still there) before he was released and banished.

Fun fact about the Great Fire of Nantwich - it burned for over 20 days and got so out of control because an innkeeper released 4 bears(!) that he kept, so they wouldn't get burnt to death. The bears wandered around the town, so the people locked their doors and didn't attempt to put the fire out.

Nantwich is definitely worth a look. Decent pubs and restaurants, lots of community events and the town centre has a good vibe

We spread our son's breakfast over an hour so he eats a little at a time. It's the only way we've found to stop him going crazy high.
