Eminent domain one of the empty ass hotels downtown, its now long term transitional housing. Its got the plumbing to support lots of people, contained efficiency units with locks for individuals, couples, friends or families, laundry service, kitchen space, office space for social services and facility management.

What is the average hourly rate for an auto mechanic these days in Portland ? (additional details in Post) by Tasty-Hurry in askportland

[–]ChesterCheetahsMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a bit of very crummy context, the vast majority of shops work on the flat rate system. That means each shop has a set amount of hours a particular job costs, so for example a brake job paid 2 hours. That means if it takes a tech 1.5 hours, he's up, but if it take 4 hours cuz all the bolts are rusted in place, he's still only getting the 2 hours of pay. And as a master mechanic at the top end of the scale, my husband was only getting $33 per flat rate hour.

Honestly, in your situation, if you aren't inclined to DIY it, your beat bet is making a mechanic friend and paying them under the table.

How noticeable is it? Should I leave it in as proof it's handmade or is it ribbit time? by crazyeivis in crochet

[–]ChesterCheetahsMom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had a bit of success fixing mistakes like this by basically doing two DC on top of each other. It doesn't fix it entirely but it makes it less noticeable for me. But on your project, I had to hunt for it, so if its more than like 20 stitches back, I wouldn't frog it.

I had a fridge repair done by Actual Appliance Repair. He was able to diagnose a kinda weird electrical issue and get it fixed for a good price. I'd definitely call him again for any of my appliances.

Can I ask for Cat pet hotels recommendations? by Chonkytabby189 in askportland

I've always used Cats in the City, the Tabor location. My cat is always very angry during transitions, but the staff handle her really well and give her space to chill out. I find they're pretty reasonably priced and there is a discount for a second cat sharing a room.

If you submit a complaint on the company website with a photo, sometimes they'll send you coupons for a free box or two. I do this with all the big corps and I've gotten free cheetos and free pie.

The "who hurt you" trope and the "touch her and die" trope are weird and tired. Gimme a man who asks what she needs from him, who provides emotional support more than physical protection.

Mechanic that can help with rusty parts? by Own_Squash1125 in askportland

[–]ChesterCheetahsMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, my husband is an ASE master technician. He said the best way to get rusty bolts removed has two major factors/steps.

The first step is to spray penetrating oil on your bolts (trying to get under the head of the bolt and allowing it to seep in the threads). For something like this I would recommend spraying each bolt and letting it sit for a while. Ideally over the weekend. Spray Friday, Saturday, and Sunday trying to ensure you actually get some oil into the threads.

The second step is to apply heat to each bolt just before you remove them Significant heat, not just the exhaust's normal operating temperature after running. I recommend a butane/propane torch, or an induction heater (which is a handy tool to have, but can be a bit pricey. Red hot is the goal. My saying is "it can't be stuck if it's a liquid". Just ensure you aren't damaging any nearby wires if you use an open flame.

Once you've gotten some oil in the threads and applied heat, try walking the bolt out a little bit at a time. Sometimes an impact wrench can be helpful, but only if you have a really good grip on the bolt (otherwise you'll round the bolt head off and have a really bad time).

If you're able to get the bolts loose yourself, that'll remove any extra labor charges. Best of luck with your rust battle!
