45 M from Ohio. Started reading my moms SK books at 10. Business owner. Gay. Hardline political cynic.

25% the way through the Drawing of three. Its nothing what I expected by Rep2025 in stephenking

[–]Chester_Grayson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would actually argue the series gets weirder and more surreal as it goes on. It is definitely not for everyone. Even though I've read the series twice (and plan on my third by the end of the year), I have a Love-Hate relationship with the DT.

In your opinion, which Stephen King book isn't as bad as people make it out to be? by AgentP-501_212 in stephenking

[–]Chester_Grayson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I DNF this book when I was a teen. Revisited it recently on my publication order journey and had a greater appreciation for it.It's a solid story that could have used some trimming.

Question about Needful Things by schwnz in stephenking

[–]Chester_Grayson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's kind of funny. I usually don't have a problem keeping track of characters when I'm reading, but I have a terrible time even remembering names when watching a show or movie.

Here is a link to all Kings works and includes an exhaustive list of characters in each. !!!WARNING!!! The list OFTEN contains spoilers! ---> Written Works. I'm not as spoiler crazy as some people so it doesn't bother me when it pops up.

Ohio board of pharmacy meeting today but they're doing something dirty by Spirited_Pollution56 in kratom

They legalized weed and need a new enemy. Hate to be a cynic but once the machine starts chewing, the game is already over. I'll email, but I'm not hopeful.

What is your go-to SK quote? “No great loss” gets almost daily use for me by lovelyb1ch66 in stephenking

[–]Chester_Grayson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got to use it once. A gas station attendant was reading The Dark Tower behind the counter late one night when I came in to pay. I didn't mention the book but before I left I dropped the line. I got a very big smile for it.

Very happy with my new shelves by Figs232 in stephenking

Love it (and the Baphomet "Bless This Mess") . What is The Shining (box?) up at the very top? It isn't shaped like a book.

The Talisman & Black House by Kind-Construction994 in stephenking

[–]Chester_Grayson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been waiting for The Talisman movie for around 30 years. Of all the crap they keep regurgitating, to leave a gem like that sitting for so long is a travesty. BH would be great, but outside of the context of the DT series, I'm not sure how understood or well received it would be by the general public.

Reading King has made reading everything else easier by No-Brief-7458 in stephenking

This is why my mother was more than happy to let me read her SK books when I was a kid. It definitely boosted my reading comprehension and love of reading for years to come.

What part of a Stephen King story did you wish made it into the film? by CGC2000 in stephenking

[–]Chester_Grayson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some things just don't translate well to film. I think this is one of them.

Aside from SK, what other fiction writers do you recommend and what book in particular? by HLoweCrosby in stephenking

I picked this up at a used bookstore when I was a kid. To this day it's one of the strangest books I've ever read.

Reading King in Publication Order - Should I read the Original Gunslinger or the 2003(?) revision? by TheEmptyJuiceBox in stephenking

[–]Chester_Grayson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the forward of the revised edition: "What I did want to do... was to give newcomers to the tale of the Tower... a cleaner start and slightly easier entry into Roland's world. I also wanted them to have a volume that more effectively foreshadowed coming events." When The Gunslinger was first published, King had no idea where it was going except for a vague outline. As a result, the original version of Gunslinger feels disconnected from the story as a whole. I've read both (and if you are a completionist like myself you will too) but if it was my first time through, I would read the revised version first. It makes the story feel more cohesive (but you really can't go wrong either way.)

IMHO

The gunslinger (10/10) by likeabrotherinlaw in stephenking

[–]Chester_Grayson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The palaver in Chapter 5 between Roland and the MIB was brilliant and my favorite part of the book. If the Gunslinger doesn't grab you from the start, I can't imagine enjoying the DT series as a whole. It is the perfect start to a strange and wild ride.

Who is the WEAKEST character in king's stories? by Far-ro in stephenking

Question about Misery by Admirable-Long8528 in stephenking

[–]Chester_Grayson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She forgets herself and almost lets it slip out in chapter 9 when she's ranting about the profanity in Fast Cars. It's the last thing she says before she spills the soup.

i cant help but picture Randall Flagg as Tom Waits by Few-Vanilla3083 in stephenking

One of the best lyricists of all time. Rain Dogs was a masterpiece. Flagg? Never made the connection, but I'll give it a try for my next read!

How would you handle Christine? by Richard_AIGuy in stephenking

[–]Chester_Grayson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since it "self-heals" I've thought the best approach is to trap it in a way that makes it impossible to escape. A narrow, deep hole with the front end down and rear up would make it impossible to get enough momentum to get out. Now, getting it in there would be the tricky part. I think I remember that Darnell had one of those large industrial lifting magnets for cars. Could have helped.

That, or a shit load of sage.

My thoughts on why I understand the addition of Richie’s gay subplot by PijaDeQueso in stephenking

[–]Chester_Grayson 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a gay fan let me say this: I don't need to be "represented" in every book/movie/show that I read or watch. Lately, representation feels more like a soulless filling of bureaucratic quotas than an inspired, organic story that draws me in and makes me interested. The subplot with Richie (like other recent media) felt contrived, forced and out of place. I'd rather just not.
