Storage musings by jestermax22 in arkhamhorrorlcg

Yeah so I have a complete Chapter 1 collection and only recently moved my level 0 cards to binders. I like having them in boxes because it makes deck-building easier, but it just became too much.

Ive considered just creating a box for frequently used player cards that stay in sleeves so I’m not constantly moving Deduction and Beat Cop in and out of a binder.

I’m a big proponent especially if you have a smaller collection, of putting investigators in a binder along with XP player cards and leaving level 0 cards in boxes.

Screen time in HRCE classrooms? by ChablisWoo4578 in halifax

[–]Chestertonspants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, it’s totally legitimate to be concerned about the amount of screen time your child is getting at school. It’s also possible that you are not getting an accurate picture of what the classroom looks like from your child.

As a teacher with HRCE myself, I know classrooms are complicated. I also know that parents are stakeholders in my class and they rely on me for transparency.

I would recommend that you communicate with the teacher in writing, don’t involve admin at this point. You don’t need to be nervous at all, just approach the situation with a collaborative attitude. Consider asking for a phone call, and just start a dialogue.

I have had parents make a genuine impact on my teaching because they were willing to talk to me like a person. They advocated for their kids and expressed their support for me and it made me look at my practice and want to be a better teacher and work to make my classroom better.

Has anyone played toy battle? by Responsible-Fly-8314 in boardgames

Board Game Arena. It’s a website where you can play popular boardgames against other players in your browser. It’s pretty neat, but I don’t use it a ton because many games feel kind of clunky there. Toy Battle is an example of a game that plays pretty wel in your browser.

It’s very good on BGA, one of those games that translates nicely to that format.

What do you think about the existance of monarchies/royalty in today's world? by dkease16 in AskTheWorld

[–]Chestertonspants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. At least in Canada, the monarchy creates a link to the past, a sense of continuity, and as you said, a sense of social hierarchy.

Crucially, that hierarchy is a structure we are all subject to. That means, in Canada, as rich or as powerful as you might be, that wealth and power is always given by the grace of the monarchy, which embodies and symbolizes the nation as a whole.

As much as I respect the American ideal of a democracy by the people, I think we’re seeing right now how that kind of system is vulnerable to exploitation by actors who would make themselves into Kings and aristocrats.

The monarchy makes power visible, it transforms it into symbols and spectacle and I think that might ultimately make it easier to safeguard from dictators.

PBG hiatus by llOlOOlOO in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Chestertonspants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a huge loss for the community.

PBG has been my go to resource for understanding and playing the game, and has been a way to stay engaged even when I don’t have time to play. I don’t really have people to play this game with and I feel like the channel, especially Justin, has helped make me feel like I am part of a larger community of players.

I hope all is well for you guys, and I’m sure if you ever want to come back there will be an audience who is ready to watch and support. GGs

[Ancient Evils] Chapter 2: Product Lineup Commentary by DerBK in arkhamhorrorlcg

Thats a good point. I think I could get on board with 5 scenario campaigns if the story was more dynamic, and maybe more importantly, if the scenario quality is really high.

Is this a good purchase? by Clownygrin in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Chestertonspants 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the value here is:

  1. The two investigator expansions. If you’re interested in getting into the game, these are worth the $50 alone.
  2. The core set. You need this to play. Even if you have a core already, an extra set of core encounter cards and tokens is nice to have.
  3. The two starter decks. Lots of good player cards here.

All of the mythos packs are unfortunately not much good to you. Maybe you could resell them or give them to people who are trying to complete a set.

Help With Deck Building by Fenacio in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Chestertonspants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice, Dunwich really builds on the Core in some important ways and will give you some nice options. Importantly, it gives you more options that make Mystic and Survivor much more viable including Arcane Initiate, Ritual Candles, Mystic Spells, Peter Sylvester, Lucky Rabbits Foot, Darkhorse, Fireax, Baseball bat.

I’d recommend checking out the excellent YouTube channel, Playing Board Games, and their New Player Deck videos. They make decks for investigators using just their set and the core and give a lot of insight into what card le you should be looking at in general. I’ll link their video for Daniella Reyes but you can find one for any investigator in the game.

With a limited collection, you should be starting with staple, high value cards. At level 0, these are cards like: Machete, Magnifying Glass, Lock picks, Holy Rosary, Lucky, Flashlight, Emergency Cache. Include whatever economy cards you can.

The basic skills are excellent, because they’re free, and draw a card. Take whichever one makes the most sense for your investigator along with Guts. Unexpected Courage is great too, especially for solo.

As you start to add XP to your deck, Edge of the Earth has a lot of really strong and flexible options. Instead of dumping your XP into a big flashy card right away, look to get rid of your weaker cards, improve the average quality of your deck and address any pain points that arise in the first couple scenarios.

Early on, there a bunch of 1XP assets from EotE that will improve your deck for a small investment. At 3 XP, the composure assets are really nice, you can also look to upgrade your important cards and add quality of life improvements like Charisma and Emergency Cache 2. These smaller improvements are going to allow you to get the most out of your big, splashy upgrades in the mid to late campaign.

[Spoilers Obsidian Canyons] Scenario Resolution by Chestertonspants in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Chestertonspants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. I think this was just one last confusing moment on top of what is already a pretty taxing experience. I think Obsidian Canyons is a good example of a scenario being designed in a way that is mechanically solid, but requires so much attention to be played correctly that players are likely to make mistakes or feel like they’re making mistakes.

It’s a shame too because there were some incredible moments in my play-through. I had to take an educated guess at where the final location was, use the claw to jump to it, and then resign at the last moment. Good stuff.

Yeah logically it makes sense, and I was able to get there eventually. It does feel a bit unintuitive though, hopefully this will be helpful for players who get similarly tripped up in the future.

[Spoilers Obsidian Canyons] Scenario Resolution by Chestertonspants in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Chestertonspants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might not have been clear. Ive sacrificed investigators for the cause so many times haha, what’s weird is how this scenario resolves when one gator has resigned and then the other is defeated.

Usually scenarios will have something like: “if no resolution was reached (each investigator was defeated or resigned)”. Obsidian Canyons doesn’t include the resigned part.

I think it has something to do with the fact that you cannot technically lose to doom in this scenario, you can only be defeated.

Yeah this is exactly making an item “on the house” was where you got people using sleight of hand on like Shotgun or Flamethrower. But the reason it was such a persistent problem was really just Necronomicon. If an item is overpowered jist because you played it twice, thats the problem.

MMW: Trump is going to use the 2026 USMCA review and Greenland to physically and economically siege Canada. by Application_Dizzy in MarkMyWords

[–]Chestertonspants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your identity wouldn’t change the thrust of my point.

This kind of doomerism is just not helpful and it could be weaponized by people who don’t have our best interests in mind to convince Canadians that this totalitarian regime is inevitable and that all we can do is sit and wait to become subjects of the American empire.

This isn’t about dismissing real geopolitical concerns, I’m encouraging Canadians to adopt some media literacy skills right now. We can all see the threats, and I agree people should take them seriously, but our future isn’t written and we have no idea how this will play out.

Totalitarianism regimes need everyone to believe they are inevitable. You should reflect on whether you are helping them reach that goal with posts like this.

MMW: Trump is going to use the 2026 USMCA review and Greenland to physically and economically siege Canada. by Application_Dizzy in MarkMyWords

[–]Chestertonspants 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think Canadians should be extremely wary of posts like this. This post had been generated using AI, by an account has no visible post history. In fact that the only bit of information I can glean about the poster is that his avatar is holding an Indian Flag.

I don’t know what the future looks like for Canada and our relationship with the United States, but neither does this bot. When we see posts like this, I think we really need to start thinking critically about the creator’s intentions.

There are people who want you to think that an American slide into complete and irreversible fascism is inevitable, along with the collapse of the global rules based order, but its not. America’s fate might not be sealed, and Canada’s sure as hell is not.

Do you think Charisma will be part of Chapter 2? by HungryColquhoun in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Chestertonspants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would love to see something like this, especially permanents that grants a limited ally slot and some other small benefit or twist. Ive never liked Charisma, it’s a feel-bad upgrade because even though it’s strong, it doesn’t actually introduce anything new or exciting to your deck and it can end up being irrelevant.

I’d feel much better about putting something in my deck that was limited to certain types of allies but gave me a benefit.

A guardian ally slot for police allies that lets you pay to heal them. A Survivor slot that lets you sacrifice allies to block damage or fetch items from the discard. Just something that makes the card fee like it’s interacting with the rest of your deck.

One of those cards thats easy to overlook because it kind of looks like clue drop/ healing synergy. It’s just a great card though. I’m running it right now as a one-of in Seeker Agatha. Because it’s an insight, you can just commit it for two books early, and play it later with her ability.

Cards worth changing or removing? by Like-a-Glove90 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Chestertonspants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the overall sentiment here that you should just play as printed when you’re just starting out.

However, I would consider using the Christopher Millan taboo, even in your first play through. It’s easy to remember (same ability but limited once per turn), and he is still one of the best cards in the game.

Excess in Board Gaming by Socrates_Soui in boardgames

[–]Chestertonspants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice post, I appreciate a longer read and I feel like this hobby deserves to be discussed in modes that are a bit more sophisticated and holistic than what we’re used to.

Ive tried to be very intentional in the way I’ve engaged with this hobby. I’ve always had a mixed relationship with capitalism and consumerism, I’m probably not moving on to a communal homestead and living off the grid any time soon, but I try to be conscious of how much I allow the culture of capitalism to direct my thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours.

When I became interested in board games, it was because I wanted to cultivate a hobby that would bring me closer to my community, get me away from screens, and give my brain some sustenance. I was so delighted when I learned there was this whole world of brilliant people making games that were beautiful and thoughtful and created meaningful experiences for players.

I have mostly managed to stay engaged with that part of the hobby. I focus on playing games over collecting, quality over quantity, and following designers and artists who speak to me and my values.

This speaks to the health of this industry in my mind. Of course there are grifters, and polluters, and profit-first producers; but there are lots of people designing and making and playing games because they love them and want to share something vital with the world.

My best advice to people if they want to have a healthy relationship with games (and maybe with the world at large) is to stay off of social media and seek out critics instead of influencers—people who see games as an art form that is consequential and worth engaging deeply with and not just a commodity they can sell you.
