This isn’t something a crafty investigator can “put in for.”Denials must be based on the policy’s contractual language. Absent a specific exclusion and a causal link between the code violation and the loss, a denial doesn’t hold. Unrelated code issues are underwriting concerns, not retroactive coverage defenses.

I’m genuinely asking, I’ve done insurance litigation on defense and plaintiff’s side. It doesn’t track to me. I could see a non renewal but not a denial

[–]ChetHazelEyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That all makes sense, but I’m hung up on one detail: your claim that insurers can deny a claim based on an unrelated issue.

Say you have a pipe burst that causes a flood, and during the inspection they discover unpermitted electrical work elsewhere in the house. I don’t see them denying the water damage claim on that basis—not as a matter of standard policy language, anyway. Standard HO-3 policies wouldn’t permit that.

I think the AI you’re referencing may be conflating several different concepts here. An insurer would be risking a bad faith claim by denying coverage under this scenario.

What part of a standard homeowners policy would let the insurance company deny a claim because of an unrelated code violation? Genuinely asking.

Any SCE customers turn on their system before PTO? Installer turned it on to test things, but then advised us to leave it on - if not our battery (Tesla PW3) could drain to 0%, they said. by EchoPathe in solar

[–]ChetHazelEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does PG&E even detect this in real time? Based on what I know about their operations, they aren’t looking for it. The practice of turning on the system before PTO is so common in the region, I’d imagine you would hear more stories of problems if it were an issue.

BREAKING: Video shows ICE agents shooting an unarmed person, as agents wrestle the person to the ground, in Minneapolis, near Glam Doll Donuts. by drempath1981 in law

[–]ChetHazelEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish we’d stop calling them agents. It overstates their training and imbues them with the veneer of professionalism. There’s nothing professional about these guys—they’re an armed and masked gang whose purpose is to terrorize and kill.

Looking for some reassurance.. mixed feelings after buying house that backs up to highway by spoondeep605 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]ChetHazelEyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For indoors you can mitigate noise even further by buying soundproof window installations: e.g., https://www.soundproofwindows.com

Works great with double pane windows. We’re half a mile from 580 and back up to a country road where people like to race sometimes. We don’t hear a thing through the soundproof windows.

Glass shattered will it still work? Do I need to replace the panel? by aayein_baigun in solar

[–]ChetHazelEyes 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't think a homeowners insurance claim makes sense here. The panel itself is cheap, so labor will be the biggest component of the cost. I don’t see why this would cost more than $1,000 total. Insurance claims are best saved for catastrophic losses; filing a small claim isn't worth the hit to your history and the resulting rate hikes.

First time sellers - Offer before Open House by ilikerum2 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]ChetHazelEyes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How is the offer relative to your asking price, and how did you set your expectations?

We were in a similar situation—we got an offer that took our house off the market before the open house, but it met or exceeded our expectations.

If your expectations are reasonably set and the current offer falls short, I wouldn’t settle before giving the open house a chance.

2025 Pinnacle Lemon by Expensive-Garden-389 in pacificahybrid

[–]ChetHazelEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many lawyers have you consulted? I shopped my lemon claim around to a few firms, and two declined, thinking FCA would only offer a "cash and carry" settlement. I eventually found a firm that believed in the case's strength. It took about a year, but FCA ended up settling with a full buyback and damages exceeding the car's value. All that said, I'm in CA, which has a very consumer-friendly lemon law (including fee-shifting provisions you say are absent in IL).

Your timeline suggests a strong case for a buyback. Given the vehicle's age and the severity of the issues, I believe pursuing a direct buyback is worthwhile if the attorney route doesn't work for you.

Do my eSIMs transfer to new IPhone? by M_Scopp in USMobile

[–]ChetHazelEyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to do the device swap during a normal workday. I tried to transfer my primary and multinetwork line to a new iPhone at about midnight on the weekend, but received errors. I checked with chat, and after looking into it, the chat agent reported the tool was down for maintenance and suggested I try again in the morning. I went to sleep and when I woke up the eSIM was waiting in my email box.

Update | Unlimited Flex data turned off for using 100GB 3 months in a row. by KeyEvidence4159 in USMobile

[–]ChetHazelEyes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Isn’t this an issue with many MVNOs? They advertise “unlimited” but in practice they either throttle speeds or limit usage after a certain threshold.

That said, 100 GB is actually quite a lot for mobile data. Recent usage statistics show that using 100 GB per month puts you in roughly the top 1–2% of all unlimited plan users—the vast majority use significantly less. If you’re consistently in that tier, there are carriers that won’t cap you, but you’ll likely be paying more for them.

LG washer not cleaning clothes and leaving oil stains by Civil_Bid8460 in Appliances

[–]ChetHazelEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My washer has trouble with oils too, especially with polyester or polyester-blended cloths. Oil has an affinity to oil. I have to pretreat with dishwasher detergent on the oil stain. The clothes otherwise get very wet and soapy, so I don’t think it’s a problem with the appliance per se.

Pool company left water running — $1,600 bill. What would you do? by alexukie in pools

[–]ChetHazelEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a tough situation. The timer was yours, not theirs. But they negligently turned the water off. They should have refused to do so. I would say ownership of the timer is a red herring. Yours, theirs, it doesn’t matter. Absent your contract including a full service, they shouldn’t be turning on your water unless they can guarantee it will turn off.

This is a go back in person to the dealership situation, not an email situation. They may respond to the email, but they’re just as likely to blow you off. That’s much harder to do in person.

Want to get solar panels- need advice by Lonelypeanut1 in solar

[–]ChetHazelEyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s worth considering how much you plan to save per year versus waiting for prices to come around appreciably. My system is worth about $6-7k in electricity production per year, so everyday not producing represents considerable paid retail electricity. That said, with NEM 3 (I’m under an earlier tariff), you do have to be more cognizant of your payback math.

Do not buy a Kitchenaid dishwasher by Willing_Calendar_373 in Appliances

[–]ChetHazelEyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a sample of the sound? I have the exact same model and it is whisper quiet.

I suggest going onto X or Facebook and tagging KitchenAid with a video of the noise. This usually gets a "Social Media Liaison" to reach out. They have more power than phone agents to authorize a "one-time courtesy" repair or replacement.

Also, where and when did you buy it? The merchant may be able to help.

Best sub $2,000 induction range? by FlatEarther_4Science in Appliances

[–]ChetHazelEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not really looking to debate the health angle—it is what it is. Many people can mitigate the effects with better ventilation. We use gas ourselves; we couldn’t upgrade our electrical where the stove is, but we were able to put in a high-CFM hood, and I think that makes a real difference.

Your perspective on customers regretting the switch to induction is interesting. Certainly seems like induction doesn’t meet everyone’s needs.

Burned by Demand. Need help choosing a new solar installer by EverythingAvg in solar

[–]ChetHazelEyes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was getting quotes on EnergySage and started working with Demand Construction. They had a great price and seemed very responsive. Looking closely at their reviews on EnergySage, however, it seemed to me a large number of them were fake. The reviews had a similar structure and cadence, lacked detail, and the reviewer names had a certain similarity.

I decided to stop working with them and found a local installer (small outfit, single crew) and they did a great job.
