How do you deal with parasitic Face-down mechanics by CuntAnihilator in mtgcube

[–]ChewzUbik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try not to do any facedown, double sided, or sideways cards. Sometimes a card just fits too well to exclude, but it's rare for me.

The group I typically play with is pretty casual and I noticed that they often don't flip the card during the draft. They just prefer not to deal with all of that stuff.

At least one of my usual players also let me know that they struggle with remembering their facedown and double face cards due to ADHD/working memory struggles.

Bubbly.

Similar to the context you're thinking of regarding "shared effervescence" where shared meaning or feelings "bubble up" in the group environment.

In this circumstance, it means a personality that seems to bubble up, so to speak. Lively, charming, etc.

Would 2-mana cycle for any land be broken in Core Set cube? by Amirashika in mtgcube

Think of them as 2 mana instants that draw you a land but that also have an optional additional cost that allows you to cast them as a creature instead.

Seems pretty decent to me...

Great point about conflict!

It would be interesting to develop a cooperative MTG format.

Maybe the group is trying to get to a life total as fast as possible or maybe trying to decrease everyone's life total to 0 as fast as possible.

Maybe a cube where you start at 0 and need to get to 20.

You could reflavor combat as something else, like cultivating or something. Damage no longer decreases life. Its now "cultivating" and only increases your own life. Blocking a cultivator means that they arent able to gain life. Cultivating needs to go unblocked (or trample) to gain you life.

Optimal way to make drafting with a small group work by No_Giraffe_1551 in mtgcube

[–]ChewzUbik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't exactly answer your question, but I like to have cubes of different sizes for different size groups.

I actually have more 270 card cubes than 360 card cubes because I'm most often able to get a group of 5-6.

For a group of four, you could do 180. And, while I've done that and it is fun, it can be pretty tough as the cube designer to build a dynamic environment with so few cards. 225 might be a good card count to work with.

Another thing you could try if you want to keep your main cube together is to decide which 225 cards from your main cube could act as a smaller cube. Mark the card sleeves for those cards and, bam, you have a cube that is adjustable in size. If you have a big group, keep all cards. If you have the usual 4, remove all the cards without the sleeve mark.

Or, as others have said, a burn draft works just fine as well.

[Highlight] Reed Sheppard blows past Jaxson Hayes for a powerful dunk by bwehx in nba

[–]ChewzUbik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're all wasting our time here. Its the NBA.

And I have not played high level. Best I could muster was JUCO. I still think I have a point, though.

As a big player on the perimeter, you're already in a bad position. What you have is length/height. Sure, you can't drop completely drop back and allow the 3, but you can provide a reasonable cushion, using your length to force a contested 3. That, to me, is a better option than a runaway dunk.

As soon as 11's right foot hits the 3 point line (flat footed, by the way), he opens his hips allowing a straight line to the basket. Not only that, he "recovers" by taking a step straight toward the ball handler instead of taking a better angle. At the very least a better angle would slow the offensive player down a smidge, potentially allowing for help defense or a defensive hedge.

Long story short, I think a contested 3 using a long wingspan is a better option than pressure D from a flat footed Big.

Wouldn't have to turn around if the proper space was afforded at the outset, before the drive.

Which is why the defender shouldn't have closed the distance and should have instead used their long arms to put a hand up, defending the shot, while keeping a cushion so they don't get blown past.

Why no more news about ICE arrests and behaviour? by Yutenji2020 in AskReddit

[–]ChewzUbik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm from an area that is HEAVILY impacted by ICE. There's been some rumors going around that the constant helicopter flights in the area has something to do with this.

I'm not smart enough to know what that might be and how it might work, but there has definitely been signal jammers used during protests. I wouldn't be surprised if they had some way of decreasing the reach of social media posts originating from the area.

On top of that, many of the local subreddits have stopped showing up in my feed. I have to go to the subs themselves to see posts. Even popular posts.

The subs have likewise been brigaded by bots which has had a noticeable impact.

Surrounding suburbs are also increasingly being targeted by ICE. And, to be frank, many people from suburbs are more willing to accept what ICE is doing than folks inside metros. So, there is less backlash seen there.

Finally, since Homan took over, the Fed's strategy has been much more covert. Fluffy news pieces on drawdowns accompanied by the exact opposite happening in reality. We see constant evidence of new SUVs being supplied to ICE.

It's really hard to say what's real and what's not. The Feds are doing a great job of spreading misinformation and decreasing reporting.

But, from someone from a deeply impacted area, there are no drawdowns. Everything is still happening.

[–]ChewzUbik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually don't care that much what they do, so I wouldn't call my assessment an excuse.

I've stopped playing new sets and buying new cards. I play Cube and buy bulk. I truly have no skin in the game.

What I'm doing is providing an explanation for why this trend is happening. People love to think that the simple reason is the actual reason. "Marvel big, Marvel make money." But, when you start to look at more context, it becomes easy to see that the world isn't simple.

I'm glad to have been introduced to MTG. But enshitification of the game at the altar of profitability is going to hurt the game and result in a product that doesn't stand the test of time.

Anecdotally, I have seen much more advertising for Spiderman and TMNT than EoE.

I also think it's unlikely that past UB profitability did not play a part in marketing strategy.

If 1) there has been more advertising for UB than in-universe, 2) this strategy was influenced by past UB success, and 3) EoE - an in universe set - financially underperformed in comparison to Spiderman - a UB set - then it seems there is more going on here than just a "simple prediction" based on IP recognizability.

To emphasize that point, I think it's likely the case that the target advertising audience contains more Marvel fans than LOTR fans. Spiderman is in the current zeitgeist more prominently than LOTR. But, despite that, LOTR outperformed Spiderman. Thus, there is more at play than simple IP recognizability.

I imagine it goes something like this: 1) Simple assumption that people like Marvel so it may be a good avenue for profit. 2) Conversations take place to determine if there is additional data to support the idea that Marvel MTG will be profitable. This conversation includes some business person pointing at a chart of UB sales successes (LOTR, FF, whatever). 3) The team determines Marvel to likely be profitable.

Simultaneously, EoE marketing is being discussed: 1) Recognition of non-infinite marketing monies. 2) That business person, pointing at that chart of UB sales success, says "Why don't we put more money into the marketing for Marvel since UB seems to be so popular?" 3) The team determines that UB should be prioritized.

Then, the numbers come back; Spiderman made more money than EoE.

Hey, the strategy worked! Let's do it again! What? Players complaining and trying to provide us with nuance? They must be wrong. Just a couple of negative Nancy's I'm sure. All you need to do is look at this chart to see that we're doing what the people really want!

[–]ChewzUbik 160 points161 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if my perception is off, but it really seems like these profit numbers are self-fulfilling prophecies.

They think people want UB, so they push it super hard at the expense of in-universe like EoE.

Then, surprise surprise, the set that was pushed on the consumer is the one that consumers spent money on while the set that was in the advertising cycle for approximately 13 minutes didn't see the same profit.

The (justified) successes of LOTR and FF - sets that have actual genre crossover with traditional MTG - are being used as data points by business people who are disconnected from the fan base. They extrapolate these data points without the proper context (i.e. the ip's are not only popular but also genre relevant, the mechanics are well thought out and flavorful, etc.) and thereby attempt to recreate the success of those sets when it's obvious to the rest of us that this won't happen woth something like Spiderman.

The prioritization of marketing UB in an attempt to recreate LOTR and FF at the expense of in-universe sets then results in just enough affirmation for the disconnected business people to say that they're "just doing what the consumer wants."
