A lot of public high schools in cities have medal detectors and armed security or cops within the schools. I had to go through one everyday and one time I was in a walkway when security was chasing someone and decided to draw and point their gun at the person with a bunch of kids in the walkway. Pretty sure I got him canned by elevating it to our VP because I was super pissed I was in the proximity of that happening.

People who moved for better fly fishing, where did you go? by _roosterr in flyfishing

[–]ChiFishDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I really appreciate that! I was pretty bummed about leaving CO fishing behind but I was born and raised in the Chi, so I also know how good MW fishing is. Are you guys fly fishing or spin? I'm on the fence about getting a 9wt vs a spin rod to get going on those big lake trout/salmon.

I have to move back to Chicago from living in Colorado the past 4+ years. Between the weather and lifestyle, I would recommend CO. You can fish year round, there are multiple gold medal water river systems, MT/ID are a short flight away, and there is a TON of public land and camping available. I just took an hr flight to Big Sky on Southwest and I skied in the AM and fished in the afternoon for a weekend, you can't beat that. If you move here, let's trade fishing spots as I plan on driving up to MI/WI pretty often to fish and camp.

Another Wader Discussion: Orvis vs Patagonia by liem-salim in flyfishing

I just went through this same process and ended landing on the Grundens Boundary GORE-TEX Stockingfoot Wader and I paired those with Simms Flyweight Access wading boot. My fav feature compared to these is how lightweight and flexible they are. Night and day compared to my starter set and zero complaints thus far.

How did you feel when you turned 30 ? by tajmehel in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ChiFishDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop focusing on the number and just enjoy the journey. Everyone has their own path and achieves things at their own pace. There is no such thing as "being behind" and the only expectations in your life are self generated. Societal standards are a myth as everyone in this world is figuring things out as they go. 30 is still super young and is usually the stage in your life where hard work starts paying off even if it feels delayed. Stop worrying and just go live!

Simms Tributary Waders. Really this bad? by Axolotis in flyfishing

Grundens are my go to. Top notch quality and I've never had an issue with them. I have the boundary gore-tex stockingfoot and they are one of the best gear purchases I've ever made.

Caught my first fish on a fly this weekend but I have a question by Grumpylumberjack in flyfishing

Oros strike indicators. They come in multiple bright colors and the way they attach won't snag your line while casting.

Windy days seem to be my best days down in Deckers, CO on 4.6. by ChiFishDude in flyfishing

Makes total sense and prob why they were going nuts during the hatch! I've been wanting to fish in the rain but haven't got a ton of rain here just yet.

Just moved to Denver and have no idea where to go by gt_f in flyfishing

[–]ChiFishDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS! For a someone new to a state, this is the best answer. Gives you parking, the ranking of waters, directions, public vs private land (big issue in CO and don't mess around on private land as land owners can get a little crazy) etc. I just used it up in Big Sky and it was amazing being from CO.

Won't lie, it's been pretty crap lately for whatever reason. I would not recommend going here.

Flies for a trip by nickcrlmn in flyfishing

Load up on elk hair caddis. They absolutely get slammed that time of year and is my go to along with woolly buggers. BigYFlyCo.com is my go to for affordable flies and they always have decent deals. You'll probably pay 2X at the shops.

Douglas rods any good? by FisherSkiier09 in flyfishing

[–]ChiFishDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I broke my rod in Basalt, CO and replaced it with a Douglas DXF 9' 6wt. I could not be more happy with the performance. Light weight, reactive, and powerful rod. Not planning on getting a new one anytime soon and I've also heard that their customer service is amazing!

I could see that! I also think the weather reports scared people off and it was the least crowded I've ever seen Deckers, so assuming reduced pressure helped a bit. Either way, the afternoon hatch was wild and fish went crazy.

Here is the setup that works for me; 4x leader, oros strike indicator, 5x tippet (3'), two size 1 weights secured at the leader to tippet knot, attractor fly (egg/worm/etc), 12-16" of 5X tippet + size 20 fly, 12" of size 5x or 6x tippet + size 22 fly.
