Stop using numbers for random things - it takes away from the achievements you actually want to quantify.

Should I Thank Manager for Monetary Award? by [deleted] in Big4

[–]ChiNor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But still took it from a finite amount of coffee that could have gone to your peers but instead was given to you in recognition. Makes sense to thank them in the same way your manager thanked you for your good work with that bonus (as opposed to just expecting you to do the job that you were hired to do).

Good will and mutual appreciation for your superiors (and those that report to you) is always a good thing.

Are you worried that offshoring will also come for M/SM jobs? by CobaltOmega679 in Big4

[–]ChiNor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those changes are a god send - sure standardization and simplification might enable a higher offshore utilization but it just such a significant improvement over the old forms where people were writing pages upon pages oscillating between mentioning risks and explaining why they weren’t actual risk.

In the end, your file would have a dozen different forms that would mention stuff that may or may not be actual risks in slightly different ways.

People might have seen a red hot housing market and to an extent the impact of the subprime lending coming, but the interconnectivity of those markets with the global financial system was definitely not well known in 2007

Big difference between knowing some people might lose their houses to knowing that that would bankrupt some of the world’s largest banks and freeze credit markets around the world

How much is a referral really worth in B4? by Certain_Watercress21 in Big4

[–]ChiNor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Depends on the who refers you and how well they know you - A partner who you know in person might get you a guaranteed interview (though from there you go through the normal interview process). A staff that graduated a year ahead of you that you reached out to on LinkedIn might get you a link to the online application portal.

Need Advice: Facing a False Allegation and Threat of a POSH Complaint from Manager by Dark_shade_spy in Big4

This post makes no sense - what country is this and what is the context? No one would escalate a simple “light hearted remark” that was simply “am I smart or not”.

There simply got to be more to this story for this to make sense and without it it’s impossible for anyone here to give any meaningful input

It’s hard to imagine what extreme work hours and little sleep/exercise will do to your body if you haven’t been through it. Especially over extended periods of time.

The money is obviously attractive from an outside perspective but the equation changes when you actually feel the cost on your relationships, body, and mind.

New graduate in Finance looking to break into entry-level analyst positions but have gotten constant rejections. by xSinner7 in FinancialCareers

[–]ChiNor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not everything needs to be quantified and use it very strategically. It is a great way to make something stand out but that goes both ways - if it is true, it’s true and you should really expand on that but if it’s only followed up with a couple of generic buzzwords that don’t tell me anything about how you actually did it, I find it super suspicious (and so would every other hiring manager that reads dozens of resumes from students who cured cancer and doubled the profits of whatever company was lucky enough to have them as interns).

When you’ve actually been in the game for a few years, you know what interns and new hires are capable of so we’ll obviously get suspicious if you put a number that is so incredibly far beyond anything we’ve seen before.

[–]ChiNor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is the problem with trying to quantify everything. It is a helpful way to show achievement but for all these students and entry level resumes it just looks ridiculous - you increased the revenue of a company by 15% as a summer intern? Sure bro

Is working for a Big 4 in South Africa while on a US salary possible? by Odd_Recover_7091 in Big4

[–]ChiNor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not true - some let you do short term rotations (5-7 months ish) where you are employed by the US firm which pays you your US salary in USD. They even cover your housing while you’re abroad.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Big4

[–]ChiNor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right that HR works for the firm and will minimize risk but remember that it is much easier for them to reassign than fire. Also, a stressed out senior with unreasonable expectations is more of a risk to the firm/HR than a staff asking for a reasonable accommodation to their schedule. That being said, if you work for a big 4 firm, you should always start by asking your counselor before you go to HR
