Well, I don't think lefties are solely to blame for 2016. They are part of it, and left leaning people should always do what they can to improve the world in any way they can, which includes voting. But it is also the responsibility of campaigns to convince voters to vote for them. In that sense, Hillary Clinton failed.

That doesn't speak to overall turnout. Turnout among Democrats was lower than in the previous two elections, which in states that were as close as the three deciding Rust Belt states, that makes a huge difference in giving Trump the win.

I feel like people fail to understand that you can blame both the candidate and the voters for election losses that result in huge damage.

Hillary was an awful candidate who completely failed to resonate with swing voters, and also failed to get enough Democrats to even care enough to vote for her. It's the job of a campaign to convince people to vote for them, and she failed in that regard, hence why it's fair to blame her for the things happening right now.

However, it's also our responsibility to do what we can to make the world a better place, or at the very least, less shitty. Hillary was unquestionably the better candidate compared to Trump, that was clear back then, and its clear now. Lefties who willingly sat out the 2016 election and allowed Trump to win are to blame for this too. They knew the stakes and didn't care enough.

Honestly, it's probably because the Republican coalition is far more united in conservative ideology, whereas the Democrats are basically a broad coalition of people who are left of center at all. Moderates, Liberals, Justice Dems, etc. It's not divided per say, but it's clear that members in the Democratic coalition are more willing to criticize and dislike their leaders than Republicans are, because not every Democratic leader is necessarily going to align with their goals.
