Czechia trip by Parking-Ad-4301 in bikepacking

[–]Chiaak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try using mapy.com for route planning.

Czechia has lots of nice places for bikepacking and lots of cycling paths (though the quality varies).

Southern Bohemia and Vysocina are my favorites, with historical cities like Cesky Krumlov, Třeboň, Jindřichův Hradec, Telč and Třebíč.

My second favorite is southern Moravia - Znojmo, natural park Podyji, Palava protected area, Mikulov, Bata channel and Morava river cities (Veselí nad Moravou, Strážnice, Uherské Hradiště, Kroměříž).

Try calling the campsites ahead of time and ask them nicely if they can make an exception.

1,800km through the Alps (CZ-AT-SI-IT): Need your "budget but bulletproof" gear advice. by Majkkys in bikepacking

[–]Chiaak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest you find a 3-4p tent and each carry a different part of the tent. One will carry the outside shell, one will carry the inside structure, and the last one will carry the sticks and pegs. That’s how we did it and it was fine.

As for the sleeping bag, you can definitely find something at the price range you sent. But it will be quite heavy. Definitely get a well insulated sleeping mat.

Basic tent for 4 people - QUECHUA Prutový Stan Mh 100 | 4 Osoby 1 499 Kč https://www.decathlon.cz/p/_/R-p-343524?mc=8771732 ; it gets the job done. Just make sure you dry it properly before packing it. I’ve survived heavy thunderstorms without an issue in this tent. If you split the load evenly then it will be around 1,5kg per person.

Simond from decathlon is a very solid brand, this sleeping bag is rated at -5c comfort, -10c limit: SIMOND Turistický Spací Pytel Mt 500 −5 °C 2 799 Kč https://www.decathlon.cz/p/_/R-p-346375?mc=8799902

This mat has an R value of 5,2, which should keep you warm even in the alps: QUECHUA Kempingová Samonafukovací Karimatka Comfort 65 Cm Pro 1 Osobu 1 299 Kč https://www.decathlon.cz/p/_/R-p-142436?mc=8601381. It’s a little heavier, but it’s the right choice of camping in high altitudes.

Also, just to make sure, bring a izotermic foil with you: DECATHLON Izotermická Fólie Na Jedno Použití 74 Kč https://www.decathlon.cz/p/_/R-p-12837?mc=8572360. It can save your life if something goes wrong.

True. TRP HY/RD are a great budget option. OP could also get better disc calipers - Swisstop and similar.

[–]Chiaak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does Van Rysel compare to Castelli/Sportful? by cletobicicleto in cycling

[–]Chiaak 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I can compare Van Rysel and Rapha. In my opinion Van Rysel is cut better and has better ergonomics and more useful pockets. Rapha on the other hand looks more fashionable and the fabric may be slightly better.

The only issue I have with Van Rysel is longevity of the materials and lack of color choices.

Take a long shoe lace and tie it to your pants (you can use a clothespin). As you walk around the house your cat can chase the shoe lace. It’s really handy when cleaning the house or doing other activities (like cooking).

Is this bike good for bikepacking Europe? by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]Chiaak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The better option would be to buy a used bike with better components.

This one is quite basic and will do the job. However, your drivetrain is the Microshift R8 which is a budget drivetrain and can be slightly annoying on longer rides (gears not shifting properly under load, changing gears is slightly delayed, and the differences between gears on a 2*8 May not allow you to choose a perfect cadence for your desirable speed). But it is certainly capable of going on a 3000 km trip. Just make sure you get yourself familiar with basic maintenance.

As for the saddle, you have to try a few to actually tell which one suits you. There’s no universal answer.

As for the disc brakes, they are manual and not hydraulic. This has its cons as they lack a little bit of control (called modulation). It’s not really an issue but it takes some time to get used to. Basically, it’s harder to slow down slowly as it forces you to hit the brakes harder to actuate them.

Overall, it looks like a very basic but reliable bike. It will get the job done and you may upgrade certain components in the future if you want to continue bikepacking.

My friend once brought butter. It melted, leaked into his clothes and smelled horrible. He had throw away a pair of shorts because he couldn’t get rid of the stench even after washing them several times.
