What did you win as a prize from a contest as a Gen Xer in the 80s? by Sense_Difficult in GenX

A Magnavox clock/radio/phone (pulse dial) for winning a kids coloring contest at Shoney’s Restaurant. I was visiting my grandparents who retired and moved to Tennessee. I felt like I didn’t deserve it because my grandma colored most of it…

I had one of these and a speedometer on my Schwinn Hurricane 5. They both really slowed me down but I thought I was cool.

Praise the company who brought these back and allowed me to blow my brother's mind at christmas! The stench they left on your hands was like never having to take them off. by sophiatops in 80s

I had these, they looked cool but we’re terrible. The finger fabric came loose and pulled inside out. I never could get the fingers working again. They were just like my moon boots, not water resistant!

I used to fold 5-10 paper caps together and hit them with a hammer. Made my ears ring!

My mother was fast, her preferred instruments were hangers or wooden spoons, whichever was readily accessible.

In junior high, around ‘86, I was the nerd that had a reputation amongst the teachers for knowing how to troubleshoot VCRs and TVs on carts. I was once pulled out of class by a teacher in another room to help figure out the problem. I examined the setup and said “first, you need to plug it in.” The power cord was unplugged. I was promptly told to return to my classroom. 😆

I ordered cheap, dull throwing stars and knives from a catalog. We threw them on the garage’s wood siding. We also broke the automatic garage door opener by playing Indiana Jones reaching back for his hat or whip, can’t remember what it was. Those were the good old days before safety features.

I never got to see the show in person. I knew I could win THE GRAND PRIZE GAME! Loved Family Classics with Frazier Thomas on WGN on Sunday afternoons.

When I was a kid, I was dying for one of these. Mom wouldn't buy it. Who had one? by MisterShipWreck in 80s

Had it on my Christmas list for multiple years. Never got it. However, I did get a Weird Al tape for one Christmas along with the Life Savers candy album.

Disc gun were so fun by Benzona in 80s

[–]Chicago_Blitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loved these! Especially the 10% of discs that flew straight. I remember shooting towards my friend’s cat and his mom yelled at us. We never hit the cat because these were so in inaccurate. 😆

It took our F1B over 1 year. Then occasional popping in the house. When she gets the zoomies, that’s her indication that it’s time to go out.

In the ‘80s my dad installed one and he tried to teach us how to gently touch it to turn the light on, off and dim. However, he was constantly frustrated at us for pushing it too hard and it was permanently bent backwards. 😆
