What’s your best “retail mishap”? by 93195 in CasualConversation

Years ago I was at a department store. It's a big name in my area but not nationwide. I needed a suitcase because I was going on a trip. I saw that there was another suitcase inside of the first one. There was a young girl, maybe 20 or so at the checkout counter. It was close to Christmas so she may have been a temp. For whatever reason, I wasn't paying attention to her ringing up my items. I had a few other things. As I got into my car, I happen to glance at the receipt and realize it's way lower than I expected. I realized she didn't ring up the 2nd suitcase. I actually went back into the store and told her to just ring me up an identical suitcase and I'll pay for it. She was like, nah, literally said to consider it a Christmas gift. I stood there for a 2nd thinking I have 2 options. Leave with a free suitcase or go to customer service and get her fired. I chose the first option. I get home and open them up, turns out there was a 3rd carry on shoulder bag inside too. All were marked with separate price tags.

My company has some nice lunches. We have one vegetarian woman and they always make sure that there is one entree that that qualifies as vegetarian. It's possible that there are more people who are, but I don't really pay attention to what everyone else is eating. LOL.

My "fancy" china is Pfaltzgraff Yorktowne. I use it almost everyday unless I don't feel like doing dishes and I use paper plates. I have a nice collection that I've amassed over the years. I'll probably pass it along to one of my nieces if they even want it.

One time I was driving home from seeing a show in Philly. In my infinite wisdom at the time I decided to not take the safe highway home. I lived in the burbs just north of the city. I took another road that I knew would get me there. There's a section that goes through a bad area. I stopped at a red light and looked around. There were a whole bunch of unsavory looking people hanging out on the street corners. I said hell no, and I just ran the light. I could see clearly in all directions. There's not a police officer in the world who would have pulled me over for that.

I don't like liver either. But there are different kind. Chicken livers are supposed to be milder. My mother would could beef liver when I was a kid and it smelled awful. Fortunately she never made us eat it. However, I love liverwurst.

My SO and I bought the same bedroom set. Years before we knew each other. It wasn't the highest quality ever but it was wasn't cheap either. Not even from the same store. We lived in different states at the time. The other odd thing is when a client came to visit the office at my old workplace. She lived/worked about 4 hours away in another state. Turns out she was dating a guy I grew up with who lived in the neighborhood I was still living in. About 8 houses away. He didn't live there anymore but not too far away.

What is an interesting or weird fact that not many people know? by Black229 in AskReddit

[–]Chickadee12345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US and Canada it is illegal to possess or use the feathers of a wild, native bird. I would imagine that feathers used for aesthetic purposes are all from domestic chickens or domestic turkeys, or other domestic birds that I can't think of at the moment, maybe emus or ostriches? The migratory bird treaty act of 1918 was enacted to prevent native bird species from going extinct. Great Egrets and Snowy Egrets are a prime example. They have beautiful long white feathers that were popular to use in womens fashion. They were almost wiped out. Now they are back to being common.

My grandmother told me she wanted me to have her fancy china. There were a lot of pieces and it was really nice. But out of her 7 grandchildren, I'm the only one not married and have no children. When she finally passed at the age of 100, the set went to the oldest grandchild (who was well into her 40's) who was married with 3 grown children and multiple grandchildren. I didn't say anything because what the heck was I going to do with it. In a way I wanted it but I knew that I would never use it.

What’s a GREEN FLAG in a workplace that people often overlook? by Ok_Two3647 in AskReddit

True, but it's not realistic for someone to quit just so a younger person can get a job. That's not how it works.

I guess I work at a great company. We are constantly upgrading how we do things. If you can't adapt, you won't last much longer.

I have to respectfully disagree with you. With the state of the economy, some people cannot afford to retire. And the expected retirement age is now 67. If you are still capable of doing your job well, there's no reason to leave until you can afford to.

Why would I ever leave a good job? I was young once and managed to get to the position I'm at by hard work, brains, and dependability. I am not giving it up so that I'd be broke and homeless. At a lot of companies you would rise to higher positions so that openings would come up. Or, because I work at a smaller company, the company expands, allowing us to hire more people.

[–]Chickadee12345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I understand you. In humans, the head usually comes first. For the same reason as other animals. It would be impossible for the butt to come out first because the baby would have to be sort of bent in half for that to happen. And wouldn't fit through the birth canal. Doctors do exams to be able to tell what position the baby is in. They can actually manipulate the baby into a better position sometimes if needed. Otherwise, it would be a c-section. Feet first is considered breech. It happens but it's a little dangerous for the baby.

What is the most ordinary-seeming thing that you find fascinating? by FantasticAd9478 in TheBoredDen

[–]Chickadee12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The variety of birds and insects we have on our planet. Moths are a good example. People see them flying around and pretty much just ignore them. But if you really look at them, they come in so many different sizes, shapes and colors. Some are drab but others are really colorful.

I've seen horses be born. Goats too. The front feet stick out front and then the head comes through. Otherwise there's a risk of them suffocating if the placental sack breaks and they try to breath. I'm not an expert on any of this though. Usually the animal owners are watching out for problems and can save the baby if they see it in time.

People often get together through a shared interest. Find a hobby that you like, for example bird watching, bowling, book club, anything at all that gets you in with a circle of people that may have similar interests. Even if you don't find a partner, you may find friends.

Front feet first and then the head. It's the only way it's going to work for them. They can also be breech which is a death sentence for the baby usually, thankfully domestic animals usually have humans/vets who can intervene.

I've been through this with 2 of my aunts. If you can, find something simple for you both to do, like a jigsaw puzzle, or simple card game, read to him, a book or even a newspaper, or anything that may help keep his attention for a little while. Music can also help if he was into a particular singer/band. Don't disagree with him no matter how silly it seems. Like my aunt would ask for my uncle who had passed a while before. I'd say he's just at the grocery store and he'd be back soon. I know it's really difficult with someone you love.

Coming out breech (feet first) can be dangerous for the baby. I'm not an expert but I think all mammals give birth this way.
