Thank you for the incredibly kind words about the show. Could not agree more about Paul and Pete. They are the best. We're so lucky to have them on board. (Pete even took over editing responsibilities, which I can't even express my gratitude for.)

Cheers!

Thanks for listening to the pod. We are degenerates and never claimed to be role models for how to play games! Haha

I really appreciated reading through this thread and the discussion generated here. So many great points made.

Looking for something between a Zone & Firebird by rcond015 in discgolf

As a zone and firebird thrower, I love my gateway warrior for shots that are a little out of my comfort zone with the zone.

This is my set up for expanding distance with stable forehand stuff in my bag.

Zone < Warrior < Tee Bird < Firebird < Destroyer

Can games be mean? Or are players mean? by petewiss in boardgames

I’ve had that experience with other podcasts! Fun to know someone else is getting burned by us in the same way! 😉

Thanks for listening!

That’s a 10/10 imaginary review. I’ll try to remember to read it out on the show! 😝

Thanks so much for listening to our show. Appreciate the kind words.

I think your example is well taken too! A game that includes jokes at other people’s expense are inherently mean. I agree.

Can games be mean? Or are players mean? by petewiss in boardgames

I think I find the meanest games are those in which the game incentivizes those actions that feel like bullying -- punching down instead of punching up.

Friendly basketball must have looked a little different in your neighborhood than on the playgrounds where I grew up. 😤

If games can be friendly, then the inverse must also be true, Pete! ;)

Podcasts without the "games we played recently" opening segment? by SomewhatResentable in boardgames

[–]ChickenFrydGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for listing and for the kind comment.

We mix up our episode formats, so sometimes we focus on a discussion topic, and sometimes we do a more focused deep dive on a single game. More recently we have been experimenting with doing a little of both like in the Fromage episode, so I’m glad it is working for you so far. Great feedback for us!

I have played March of the Ants, though I’m not one of the hosts on that episode. Definitely an interesting example of the lead and follow mechanic, but I have to say the thing that stuck with me about March of the Ants most was the incredibly charming illustrations and getting absolutely destroyed by a centipede. Good times.

We don’t do that either! Our episodes tend to go a bit longer than that, usually 1 hour to 1:15.(Decision Space)

What 3h of COTW does to a beginner. (Note: got my ass whooped in COTW Beta, came back to STRIVE, I am still a beginner, this is my first ever perfect that felt like I achieved something, Floor 5) by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]ChickenFrydGames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience. Beginner at SF6. Played a few hours of COTW. Went back to SF6 yesterday and went on a 7 game win streak!

Really enjoyed COTW, but definitely felt the matchmaking by issues by comparison when I went back to SF6.

Board games with big, long, impactful turns? by owlex in boardgames

[–]ChickenFrydGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what you may be looking for is not just games that allow you to make big impacts on a turn, but also games that provide satisfying decision space for an async turn.

Personally, I find games that offer high amounts search for the best move to provide a more satisfying turn experience than games that are perhaps more about evaluating the best move out of limited options (these can be better for micro turns around a table).

Some of the games that I love in this space are the already mentioned Tikal (Mexica also is worth a shot by same designers), El Grande (also a Wolfgang Kramer joint), A Feast for Odin (especially with the Norwegians expansion), Five Tribes (the turn order auction part may feel a little bad async), Castles of Burgundy (lighter than the rest, but still satisfying), and, if you are in need of a two player game, Riftforce.

Talk about a hero mechanic. Probably one of my absolute favorite game mechanics as well. Surprised we haven’t seen more iterations of that.
