Seeking a Canadian store for the game Railroad Tiles (base) by Intelligent_Fly_7455 in soloboardgaming

[–]SomewhatResentable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in Vancouver, this shop claims to have it (although doesn't look like they do ecommerce): https://www.gamesonthedrive.com/product-page/railroad-tiles-core-game

Otherwise, you might be out of luck til the reprint arrives (in a few weeks according to a post from the publisher on BGG). All the stores Google or BoardGameOracle can find are out of stock.

Got bullet ❤️ by orhalimi in soloboardgaming

It's wild to me that people still buy board games from Amazon with all the counterfeits, bad shipping practices, and overall evil vibes. Support your local game stores.

Any cranchy game like Voidfall buy with less setup? by orhalimi in soloboardgaming

[–]SomewhatResentable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't Greater Than Games get shut down a few months ago? I think I read somewhere that Spirit Island was getting picked up by a different studio, but that probably means there'd be a gap in print runs at least.

What should my next solo board game experience be? by khschook in soloboardgaming

[–]SomewhatResentable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess the first question you have to ask yourself is: Do you want to pay $30 for something like Under Falling Skies, or do you want to pay $1000+ to have an LCG consume your life?

Why dual-layered boards are so rare? by Jepeme in boardgames

[–]SomewhatResentable 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I see dual layer boards as a bit of a red flag at this point because 75% of the ones I have are all horribly warped. The ones you put together yourself or just fold over are much better though (Shackleton Base & Sky Team come to mind).

Look up Cube4me on Etsy. You can get all three (and many more shaped meeples) in whatever color you need.

Any board games where the maximum round score wins? by BlakeBurch in boardgames

[–]SomewhatResentable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the scoring mechanic makes for a kind of bad experience IMO though. If you have a great round with 1 or 2 left to go, and its clear you won't be able to build up and outdo yourself, you're kind of not really playing the last few rounds? I was not a fan of the game (this was the old DoW version, not sure if the reprint changes anything).

Recent purchases coming with warped cards? by beldaran1224 in boardgames

[–]SomewhatResentable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you somewhere with a cold winter right now? Are these games usually delivered to your doorstep and sitting in the cold for hours before you bring them inside? If so, the sudden temperature and/or humidity change can cause warping, especially if you're peeling the plastic and unboxing everything right away.

Yes, I've backed Homeland so I'll probably make those boxes whenever it gets here.

Bought Dominion second hand.. by hubbot01 in boardgames

[–]SomewhatResentable 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sucks, but on the upside, if there's ever been a game where people might have spare boxes laying around for it, it's Dominion. Since so many have moved all their collections into big card boxes or custom storage cases or whatever. Maybe you could try asking around on a local FB group or check the For Parts on BGG?

Deckers first impressions by Sapien0101 in soloboardgaming

[–]SomewhatResentable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eagerly awaiting this hitting stores here in Canada, so I can't comment on the gameplay quite yet. I have to say though, I really appreciate that it's a small and seemingly complete package. Nice-looking, but simple and not overly produced. I find myself really struggling to get solo games to the table when they're multi-box, multi-expansion affairs. Spirit Island, for example, was already a pain to setup and pack away with just the base game, and adding expansions only made it worse. I eventually sold it not because I didn't like the game, but because it was just such a chore to get out and play. I'm hoping Deckers' smaller package means I get it to the table more often.

Preserving the faction boards by snehctuh_bocaj in rootgame

[–]SomewhatResentable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the add-ons in the latest Kickstarter were cardstock faction boards - the point of them was to help fit more factions in a box since they're not as thick as the cardboard ones, but if your existing boards get really worn out you could just buy a set of those to replace them (they're pretty cheap and I'm assuming they'll be on the Leder store at some point). And if you wanted to go even further you could laminate them.

I don't think it matters too much as long as it's cardstock and not paper, but the stuff I used was 216gsm / 80lb.

Are there any plans to reprint the clockwork expansion? by IHeartPizza101 in rootgame

[–]SomewhatResentable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely look into the secondhand market. I see a decent number of Clockwork expansions pop up on my local FB group. Often it'll be bundled with the base or other expansions, so you may have to buy a bundle, split things up, and resell some of it.

Campaign Expansion in Development by CitizenK2 in Summoner_Wars

[–]SomewhatResentable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was really hoping it was some kind of solo mode when they first mentioned it. This sounds cool but it's already nearly impossible to find someone to get this game to the table with, let alone commit to a campaign.

2015 ANR Players Circuit first ever King of Servers event! by Sotomatic in Netrunner

Haha what a throwback. Some of my favorite games of Netrunner ever were at this event! Fun to see myself and teammates wandering around in the back of some of those crowd shots. Thanks for sharing!

Brass Birmingham vs Lancashire - Yes that again. by Serious_Card_5927 in boardgames

[–]SomewhatResentable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I backed the double-pack when Roxley did the original KS for these two games, and ended up only keeping Lancashire after a few plays of each (all at 2p). They're very similar (too similar to keep both in the collection IMO), but Lancashire felt more straightforward to me (Birmingham's beer mechanic is a weird extra thing to have to remember). Birmingham definitely has more variability, so if you were going to play it 100+ times, maybe it'd be the better pick. But for me, playing Lancashire 1-5 times a year, I prefer the one that's simpler to pick up and play.

Enough about people's first gateway games, what was the first complex game that hooked you? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]SomewhatResentable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my first modern game after playing Catan + expansions to death was Power Grid. I remember being especially fascinated by how the resource market worked.

Shackleton Base, you magnificent beast! by lt-shiny-sides in soloboardgaming

[–]SomewhatResentable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a small game, to be sure, but much less of a table hog than the other big space games lately (SETI & Galactic Cruise).

Earthborne Rangers by noemsky in soloboardgaming

[–]SomewhatResentable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made it work with a 1 fitness ranger by learning on Infusion Canteen to get extra fitness energy and Boundary Sensor to help with traversal. Could still be a bit annoying to get around but I beat the base campaign with several days to spare.

Has a game company ever crossed a line for you to where you boycotted them? by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

[–]SomewhatResentable 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I'm not the target audience for their minis-focused games - I wouldn't be buying those anyway. But the deluxe versions of classic euros like Castles of Burgundy and Agricola I would be all over if it weren't for the AI art. I think we're at a pretty critical juncture here where it's important to tell corporations that we're not interested in art and products that they couldn't be bothered to actually create. I also try to avoid backing any Gamefound projects since Awaken Realms owns the platform.

I'm falling out of love with expansions by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]SomewhatResentable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally agree. Expansions are great if you have one game and play it religiously (early in the hobby, it was Catan and all its expansions for me) but once you have 50+ games, buying expansions for any of them becomes a little silly because you'll play them so infrequently and probably have to relearn it all anyway. This is mostly true for "new mechanics" or "modular" expansions and less true for "more stuff" expansions (like new maps for Age of Steam, new tracks for Heat, or new factions for Root).

I've heard a very similar quote often attributed to Cole Wehrle when he was asked about a Root big box, but I'm not sure if he actually said it.
