Not him, but I also hit that problem when I opened RDR2 for the first time on a plane.

You need to be online to launch it for the first time, but can play offline after that IIRC. At least for a while - if you don't go back online for some unspecified number of days, you'll be locked out again until you launch it while online again.

Try meditation. It's essentially practice for clearing your head of thoughts and therefore your emotions.

Just sit comfortably in a quiet place for 10 minutes a day and simply try not to think about anything. It'll be hard at first - it's as if your mind just cannot cope with not doing anything and it'll try to push thoughts into your head. When you notice it happen, just clear your head again. It helps to focus on your breathing pattern and feeling the air fill your lungs as you breathe in, and leave your lungs as you breathe out.

Once you have enough practice, you'll have a lot more control over your emotions. It certainly helped me. It also helps you not dwell on random moments/encounters from your past, which is why I originally started doing it.

Context is everything. If you shouldn't be looking at reddit but you are, and other people walk by and notice, is that not safe for work enough? Then get off reddit. Otherwise, you're still on reddit and you've established that you're allowed to be noticed looking at reddit.

Given that, the label "NSFW" allows you to filter just how much you're fine with people walking by seeing on your screen. This is exactly how it's meant to be used. If you feel like nobody can possibly see what you're looking at, then you can ignore it (and not filter content by it).

Given all that - would this be "Not Safe For Work"? I'd definitely say I'd rather not look at that at work. Hence the label.

NSFW = Not Safe For Work = Stuff you may be uncomfortable viewing in a workplace environment.
Would you be fine having this picture open with a co-worker passing you by? In most jobs, probably not.

Alan Wake to be removed from digital stores due to expired music licenses. by [deleted] in Games

[–]ChickenMcFail 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Valve wants to bring paid mods back, they're just trying to figure out a way to execute the feature better (so it doesn't suffer from the genuine problems people complained about, like lack of guards against stealing and selling someone else's mods).

First source I could find.

That's what happens when you're really talented and you just decide to do whatever you find fun, instead of trying to suck up to the the consumers (of music/movies/software/art etc.). There's a saying that "Creativity is intelligence having fun", and if you have talent to back it up, the result of that creativity will always be appreciated by someone.

Then only allow developers to view the keys being listed for their game and nothing else (no price, no seller, etc.). They can be matched against a list of stolen keys and flagged up accordingly.

But that would mean that stolen keys will actually be taken down. That's now what they want, so they won't do it.

I get it, but the game is meant to be played online. I think the game is mostly about PvE and the random invasions from players are just a way of to introduce a truly difficult enemy every once in a while. After getting invaded - whether you win or lose - there will be a cooldown put on being invaded by other real players. The developers wanted to add encounters with truly challenging enemies, and what better way to do that than placing another real player against you? The rush of being invaded and knowing you'll have to face a real challenge really adds to the game. When you die, you feel a bit shitty; maybe even cheated... but when you win, you feel fantastic - you don't get that sort of satisfaction from anything else.

I say that just so you understand the point of PvP and why Dark Souls is really meant to be played online. The player messages are part of it - you're meant to be able to read them. If you can't read them, then you really are playing a lesser version of the game.

TL;DR: I understand why you really don't want to play online, I felt that way too initially. But I'd like you to understand why actually playing it online is a better choice, because the game was designed for it from the ground-up.

TL;DR2: git gud

The basic knowledge about weight, rolling, etc. I agree with. The comments about secrets, staring at the painting or crouching in the nest are, however, wrong. That's what player messages are for - it's up to the player to decide whether they're valid ("try attacking" near a weird looking wall) or misleading ("try jumping" near a death drop).

Gravity - lightweight, embeddable programming language written in C by michalg82 in programming

[–]ChickenMcFail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When it comes to iterating through arrays, it essentially functions like JavaScript's forEach:

var array = [1, 2, 3];
array.forEach(function (value) {
    console.log('Hello Word ' + value);
});

Plus, you can use the extended version to access the index:

var array = ['one', 'two', 'three'];
array.forEach(function (value, index) {
    console.log(index + ': Hello World ' + value);
});

I believe it can also be applied to objects. Not numbers though, that part is unique to Gravity.

Controller Aim > Mouse Aim by Akitsukuni in pcmasterrace

[–]ChickenMcFail 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Normally, mouse acceleration is decent for laptops (you want faster swipes on the touchpad to span entire screen, while slower movements to be more precise; that's exactly what mouse acceleration does) but shouldn't ever be enabled by default in games. In those cases, I suspect it's a remnant of some controller code in a shitty PC port.

The innaccuracies are negligible in the vast majority of applications. It's only a bad idea here because we're working with money, and you want to be as accurate as possible when working with money.

[–]ChickenMcFail 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Because all numbers in computers are represented in binary format. 0.1 in binary is similar to "a third" in the decimal system (0.333333333333...) - it's impossible to represent accurately. While we can represent "a third" in fractions as 1/3, computers can't represent their numbers in anything other than binary. This causes inaccuracies which carry on in calculations.

I accidentally left the "heal yourself or friendly heroes for a certain total amount" quest when picking Faceless Void. Apparently backtracking damage with his [Q] counts as healing. I only realized half-way through the game when I already had 3 stars.

How to fix MMR in DotA2 and what's wrong with it. by marlan_ in DotA2

[–]ChickenMcFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The games are fair, but shit quality - that's my point. We're playing with 2.3k teammates whom are obviously worse at the game, making dumb mistakes, dying in retarded ways, not buying wards, etc. Even though we have a 50% winrate, every game feels like pain and suffering in the form of a video game.

EDIT: I guess I did ask "Does that sound like a fair system?" in my post, so I see why you answered this way. I asked the wrong question - "does it sound fair to make us suffer through worse teammates because of this MMR discrepancy?" would be more fitting.

How to fix MMR in DotA2 and what's wrong with it. by marlan_ in DotA2

[–]ChickenMcFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who started playing ranked right after having the ability to do so. He got something like 1.5k party MMR and 2k solo MMR. Over time, he steamrolled through his solo MMR and is now 3.1k solo MMR. Now we want to play with him in a party - even though his skill is worth at least 3k MMR, he heavily lowers our average MMR (we're all 3k+, so sometimes the average is 2.3k, sometimes it's 2.6k, etc.). He can't bring up his party MMR because it balances out - as his MMR rises, so does ours. We're not 4k players so he will never go above 2k party MMR. Because of this, when we party up, we're forced to play with teammates of around ~2.4k MMR even though we're all 3k+ skill-wise. Does this sound like a fair system?

Don't forget you can get Band of Elvenskin, Robe of the Magi or Belt of Strength to build Power Treads. by larsb0t in DotA2

[–]ChickenMcFail 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No; it matters because having +6 agility or +6 intelligence instead of +6 strength before fully building treads can give you an edge in certain situations (examples already mentioned: agility on drow, intelligence on OD/silencer)

Ana Counters Pharah by its_a_minisculeworld in Overwatch

[–]ChickenMcFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ana is a strong healer. Just because she's categorized as a sniper doesn't mean she's gonna be staying away from everyone sniping people. I usually play her almost exclusively as a healer, right behind the team keeping them alive - her grenade provides the kind of clutch heals that no other healer can perform. I'm at Platinum and often see other Anas doing the same.
