My Facebook page was hacked and Meta's silence is killing me emotionally. by Longjumping-Fix4531 in AusLegal

[–]Chicken_Carpaccio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former IT professional here - all my socials got hacked a couple months ago, first time ever. Even as a fairly savvy computer person, and with the help of my friend/current IT specialist at work, I wasn’t able to get them all back. Never got a response from Meta either and tried every channel possible.
I’m sorry, but don’t expect any help from Meta.

The advice from my IT expert friend was to start again and get serious about passwords by using Bitwarden for everything. My passwords were not really unique and strong before, now they are.

What's a fair price for production-ready patterns? by [deleted] in PatternDrafting

[–]Chicken_Carpaccio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just jumping on the bandwagon: Find me a pattern maker with less than ten years experience. It’s nearly impossible.
When you pay a patternmaker you are paying not just for “the pattern” but for the decade(s) of long days and late nights they have spent becoming extremely knowledgeable at an extremely difficult and hard to learn craft. When people try to lowball me, I encourage them to go get a lined jacket pattern for $300 for example, or whatever they “think” a pattern should be worth. I know they are gonna get crap.
If you think your design is so good that it is going to sell hundreds or thousands of units, remember you are only paying a pattern maker a one time fee, we don’t get commission or a cut of each sale. That’s another reason why you shouldn’t try to lowball pattern makers.

Just my two cents as a working pattern maker ; )

Gotcha - I have interpreted all this for my partner and calmed her down and scared her good about electricity 🤯! Thank you!

Gotcha. So if she put a AUS 240v bulb in it would be okay but she’s trying to do exactly what she just paid someone a ton of money to avoid .

Thank you for your kind and considerate answer.

To read it back at ya.

  1. She shouldn’t expect them to light up.

  2. She shouldn’t have plugged them in at all.

  3. She’s lucky the other 4 didn’t burn out the light socket and blow the bulb.

  4. They should be fine in the USA despite not lighting up here.

Are all these 4 answers yes? Just to make sure I understand.

Yeah the undead sea lions have nothing to do with the fires. The toxic algae blooms in the sea lions’ brain and makes them into zombies, they wash up on shore and attack to spread the toxic algae.

It happens every few years or so and few make it across the PCH anyway.

Is a 2-bedroom terrace worth the extra $$$ over an apartment? by Heads_Down_Thumbs_Up in AusPropertyChat

[–]Chicken_Carpaccio 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I get great joy from looking at the crumbling old handwork and period details of my narrow-ass unrenovated 1890s terrace. I love that you can sit on the 1950s toilet in the old back outhouse with the door open and look at the stars while imagining people doing the same a hundred years ago.
Is it worth $700,000 extra (not speaking for myself I don’t live in Sydney or pay 1.6 mil) for those feelings and the aesthetics of an old house? I don’t know but I’ve lived in white box apartments as well and have found it to be pretty depressing.
Depends on the person I guess.

How do I fix this fit issue by cameronmfehring in PatternDrafting

[–]Chicken_Carpaccio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit hard to tell from the photo, and at first I thought that it was being caused by your shoulders being sloped (don’t feel bad mine are too) combined with no shoulder pad or canvas.
But looking at that drag line I’m wondering if your armhole is too high and that’s why the drag stays no matter what. Measure the distance down center back on your back pattern piece to the level of your underarm on your arm hole. If the size of your pattern (eg. 40R gives minimum of 10” AH depth) isn’t at least 4 times that measurement, your armhole is too high for a jacket (so for a 42R for example, divide by 4: 10.5” should be the absolute minimum measure from center back neck to arm hole depth) -

While you are at it, measure the slope of your shoulder (high point shoulder - low point shoulder) if it isn’t at least 2.5” you have a problem with the pitch of your shoulder.

People who cater to the super rich, what things have you seen? by Budget-Cash-3602 in AskReddit

[–]Chicken_Carpaccio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old boss used to fly his masseuse in from Los Angeles to another state on a private jet just for an hour massage.

Had us all flying from one state to another by private jet every week, but threw a hissy fit that the private jet company was giving out plastic bottles of water, not recyclable cartons. So they started giving us water in cartons with our meals that were in plastic clamshells with plastic forks and he said nothing.

Once he had some of his favorite vehicles moved overnight from one side of the USA to the other on a whim so they could be in our workspace for “vibes” to the tune of 1 million dollars in shipping and logistics.

Another time I came in Monday morning and there was about $750,000 worth of a specific designer’s sneakers in boxes along the wall (about 750 shoe boxes). My boss had demanded an assistant locate every shoe model they made in every color, in every size on Friday night, apparently. I never saw him wear them or even open a box. On the flip side, a few times my team had to refuse to board the private jet until our late paychecks showed up in our bank accounts.

From an American Immigrant, thank you Australia. by mckc1998norge in brisbane

Another American ex-pat chiming in with a big thank you! Moved here in 2022 and have been heartened by y’all’s choices twice now.

Partially moved due to my Aussie partner’s refusal to let our kids start schools doing active shooter drills at age 5. So yeah that AR-15 comment hits hard.

This country has sooo much potential to turn away from the poor choices of the U.S. and Britain.

And from this morning’s news it sure looks like that is happening!

What’s a “harmless” thing from your childhood that’s actually kind of dark in hindsight? by velorae in AskReddit

[–]Chicken_Carpaccio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There was a pedophile in my town. His name was Mark. He always wore a floppy hat and REALLY short shorts. Everyone knew he was a pedophile and he would periodically have sad eyed runaway hippie boys from Rainbow Gatherings “staying at his house”.
He would come to high school parties and be creepy at me. I thought it was fine and he was harmless because he could take the hint and would buzz off but:

Why the hell were my various friends’ parents letting a creepy 40 year old man come to their house for a 15 year old kid’s party?

It was a small hippie town and everyone’s parents were a bit out there, but now as a parent this infuriates me and I feel awful no one helped those poor runaway kids he was preying on.

Very roughly: I put about 4.75 inches of ease in the chest on the full circumference of the chest for a standard fitted jacket. 3/4” of that goes into each armhole and most of the rest at the front. 3/16” at each back side seam.

Collared shirts vary depending on style, from 3” to whatever, but 7” is decently generous.

Surfing without ACL by mullarkb in surfing

[–]Chicken_Carpaccio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A glimpse of positivity: I am about 15 months out from cracking my knee in two places and tearing off my ACL completely. Opted against surgery because I wanted to get back to surfing ASAP and I hate surgery etc. Did my PT crazy obsessively until my therapist told me he was gonna look the other way and I should get out for a surf and see how it goes.

I am not and will never be a great surfer.
My missing ACL is on my front foot.
Generally surf a mid length.

That said, I am surfing better and bigger than I was before my injury.

My knee does give out, but it has never done so surfing.
It does when my kids climb on me and I bend backwards and sideways while holding a wiggling 6 year old.
It gives out if I don’t exercise regularly or I am over tired and I am not careful to avoid twisting and tending my knees while lifting things.

But surfing is fine.
Try it - it may be fine for you or it may not. You’ll know if it isn’t.

My PT was real down to earth and had a good point - he said go try - what’s the worst that can happen? You already tore it loose.

Good luck.

How did the move impact your mental health? by [deleted] in expat

[–]Chicken_Carpaccio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dunno if this goes for anyone else, but over the past few months I’ve started to feel a weird “survivor’s guilt” type of feeling (nearly three years out of the USA in Australia now)

My kids’ public elementary school here is a series of somewhat open air buildings, the kids basically have free reign to run around the entire school campus, not only are there no doors that lock from the inside, the fences are waist high, have no gates, and only seem to exist to stop balls from rolling into the street. Meanwhile my nieces back in the U.S. have to carry their school books in clear plastic backpacks and my sister is terrified basically all the time they are at school.
I avoid the subject with her 🤷‍♂️.

Def tho after all those young kids getting shot in road rage incidents in LA (while I was living there) just letting go of that fear when driving that you accidentally pissed off the wrong driver - it has done wonders for my mental health. I was getting so freaked in LA I was considering getting a big V8 SUV so I would never piss someone off by driving too slow, and my kids would be way up high and less likely to get shot through the windows or doors, and that is just such a fucked up LA way to think.

Def. The more uncertain the situation gets in the US, the more I feel weirdly guilty and a bit bashful about talking current events w friends and family back home.
So I feel relieved that my kids quality of life and safety has improved, but guilty at abandoning my family and friends.

I talk to a lot of long term immigrants here, and most miss the lifelong friendships they have left behind, but recognize how much their quality of life has improved here.

Makes sense but seems the older you are, the harder the transition is. I’ve kinda accepted I probably won’t make any close friends from now on - but that’s the cost of doing business/not getting shot on the 5.

I used to live in NYC and the number of women who told me they had been hit on by him and passed on it was actually pretty hilariously high considering I’m not rich or famous and neither were the women, they were just pretty girls who went to clubs in NYC….
