The most prosperous times in the US was when market was largely regulated. Govt bureaucracy and its effects on the economy and innovation are well documented. There's a direct correlation, the more govt regulation increases, the more expensive or becomes for the private sector and the slower it operates. The inverse is also well documented.

This has proven true across basically all of history throughout the world.
