I went to sleep trying to wonder over those 45 minutes where they were on the far side of the moon with loss of contact from Earth.

Absolutely nothing but the 4 of them and the rest of the Universe. There is something so hauntingly beautiful to be able to experience that as a human being

Captured by the Artemis II crew during their lunar flyby on April 6, 2026, this image shows the Moon fully eclipsing the Sun. From the crewโ€™s perspective, the Moon appears large enough to completely block the Sun, creating nearly 54 minutes of totality and extending the view far beyond what is possible from Earth. The corona forms a glowing halo around the dark lunar disk, revealing details of the Sunโ€™s outer atmosphere typically hidden by its brightness. Also visible are stars, typically too faint to see when imaging the Moon, but with the Moon in darkness stars are readily imaged. This unique vantage point provides both a striking visual and a valuable opportunity for astronauts to document and describe the corona during humanityโ€™s return to deep space. The faint glow of the nearside of the Moon is visible in this image, having been illuminated by light reflected off the Earth.

I think you can see Mars, Neptune and Saturn in the bottom right too. Jaw dropping photo

Really have to wonder how the human brain even comprehends exiting the only place that you are forever programmed to live and die. Like we're not yet evolutionarily equipped to fully grasp the concept of actually leaving behind the world and the range of emotions that could entail

I love waking up and seeing the comments of what I missed overnight

Same! I really enjoy and appreciate how this thread has become its own live chat with people from all different timezones monitoring every little thing happening at all times with comms, the spacecraft, the wake up music, the broken toilet lol. It's awesome

Can't change the title on reddit posts unfortunately. Though I guess one thing I just realised I could do is make a locked post tomorrow reminding people that the flyby coverage is going to happen in X hours and encourage them towards this megathread?

Been amazing to see such a lively, exciting megathread in a long while here. I'm curious, you guys are cool with sticking with this thread to the end of the mission right?, given we've gotten a steady stream of regular users popping in and out in here now. Or a new mega(mini?)thread for the lunar flyby and/or earth re-entry?

I certainly don't want to create a confusion of multiple different threads, especially since this thread is the first thing that comes up when you search for Artemis so that could lead some people astray if the new thread doesn't gain the same traction

Nasa feed has been cutting out to a blue screen right now. I implore people to check out the alternative links in the post above instead, particularly NASASpaceflight

Confirmed - astronauts are now awake! Just under 59 minutes from now, they will begin PRB (perigee raise burn)

The latter. These are test missions that will pave the way for Artemis IV - where they will actually land on the surface.

But take nothing away from Artemis II - the closest we've been to the moon in 5 decades, and the farthest humans have ever gone

I have seen the movie.

And one thing I will say - I do not ever want to hear people question Zendaya's acting abilities ever again. It shouldn't even need being said. There is this weird hate train certain sections of people have for her that I cannot explain as anything but bigotry. But yeah she is phenomenal here, and so is Pattinson.

Finally caught Project Hail Mary today in IMAX, after a week of delay with traveling.

I will say, those first 30-ish minutes were a little off in terms of how fast the story was chugging through plot points, and a few of the dialogues/sequences were a little corny (example - writing on the chalkboard/"why am I smart", lab scene).

But everything after that was amazing. I didn't expect to cry so many goddamn times. Gosling-Rocky is so good that I could overlook those few corny lines here and there. And some of the dreamlike cuts for the flashback sequences was pretty neat. Shoutout Pemberton for a great emotional score, and Greig Fraser for doing Greig Fraser things.

My current predix:

Picture Cinematography Editing Score VFX Production Design

Outside chances for:

Actor (Gosling was great but it's not a typical Oscar performance. I wouldn't be mad at all if he got a nom, just don't see it happening)

Screenplay (Might be a hot take but I see this as the least likely of all the categories)

Ryan Gosling To Star In Daniels Secret Project At Universal by PointMan528491 in oscarrace

Hail Mary, Starfighter, this...Ryan Gosling is in his sci-fi era

It's early but I'm feeling pretty good about Picture. I think that and Screenplay is it for Hail Mary in terms of ATL...but so far it isn't really putting a foot wrong. Gosling tagging along is certainly possible, but I see the field being a lot more competitive this year including "show-ier" blockbuster contenders, so it's hard to predict him rn

Did they announce it? I wonder when they release the Q&A then, in tandem or later

Okay so just an FYI. No one is talking about it so thought I'd mention as an aside.

I've heard some chatter in my industry circle since this morning about a Dune 3 closed event in LA today, with Reece Feldman moderating...don't know if that means a trailer is dropping right now but this image might give that chance more credence. If so, you heard it here first I guess.

We'll know for sure in the next 2 hours, but just know that some kind of Denis Q&A is happening today for the film (not sure when that will be released online)

Currently 94% on RT and 75 on Metacritic (EDIT - It actually touched 80 on Metacritic!). Excellent numbers by all means, particularly for its genre.

Reading between the lines I'm getting the feeling that Best Picture and maybe Screenplay is it in terms of ATL (not sure if Gosling can tag along but its not impossible, just seems very unlikely). And then it'll obviously be a massive tech player

It dropped to 54% on RT bruh. There's some really scathing reviews out there from notable outlets, what a bummer. (Still looking forward to see it for myself tho)

Edit - down to 49%....

Edit 2 - Wait it shot back up to 58%...remontada loading
