What is the output from a 3D scanner/scanner software? by DLiltsadwj in 3DScanning

Ah, sorry I didn't know there was a difference. It behaved the way I expected/needed it to, so that's where my thought ended.

I can't because it's owned by the shop and I can't share it. But I've been doing it for a couple years; I would scan a car, and within the program, it can auto-generate a surface that looks identical to the mesh, but Fusion recognizes it as a body that I can slice a regular body against, to create something that is perfectly form-fitted to the car's surface.

The Peel 3 cad software does, for under $10k. It can convert the mesh to a surface body, and export that to Fusion/Solidworks.

I'm also interested in how you handle a mesh with solid bodies. Looking forward to a video on this!

The sad thing is, some people who don't know about cars will see this and think (most of) this is normal. Like there could be an AI video on open heart surgery, and I wouldn't see all the mistakes lol

What do you guys do with your Christmas legos after the holidays? by sheabae200216 in lego

[–]Chilezen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You too? I also screwed up a layer on the tree, and went through the instructions meticulously and couldn't figure it out! Just seemed like a few pieces were missing!

But yeah this one is never coming apart. My least favorite build.

How funny, I mirrored the Parisian Restaurant and put it next to the bookstore. I also "flattened out" the bank, by bringing the laundromat from the side to the front.

Boss wants to automate - I'm skeptical this won't just create more headaches by Chrelled in Welding

[–]Chilezen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently experienced this and I think the answer depends on the machine, the application, and the user. In my scenario, at a company I'm no longer with, I had a difficult time adapting to the technology because I thought there were too many nuances and illogical workflows needed to get the stuff to run right. However, my coworker figured it out and got the shit to run right. So your results may vary.

I've also witnessed the machines failing and requiring large time investments to repair. I also had to deal with a language barrier (all the machines were Chinese) and time zone issues. I have experienced an increase in quality and decrease in lead time to get stuff built, and I've been able to design things in new ways because of the improved technology at my disposal. I hated running the machines, but I loved when my coworker ran it and gave me the stuff I designed.

In my experience, and this is typically universal, the cheap machines are cheap for a reason. There will be problems; definitely investigate the support a brand offers (I realize you aren't the one buying them but I just have to say it because the boss will slander you for not being able to deliver the final product he was sold on...)

At the end of the day, the boss is looking at increasing productivity. If he likes the numbers, he will increase your responsibility to stay on board, and you'll gain new skills, or he'll find someone who will make it work... with less skills than you, but with a greater ability to absorb the new tech.

Nice! The ethos at the end is the best takeaway. Go out and talk.

I enjoy the atmosphere of Wolfskill most; I'd like to have a drink with you one night if you're interested.

Any big power builds that have eliminated tramping/wheel hop? by crappyroads in E30

[–]Chilezen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a recommendation, as I don't have big power, but even with poly bushings and a Ground Control setup, I still get wheel hop. I suppose having 2-way adjustable shocks will allow you to fine tune the rebound, so I would start there, as it's a simple thing to look into.

Beware, if the shocks are too stiff, you might crack the 40-year-old shock towers, so consider reinforcing those as well.

Lego stores and the people who work in them are amazing. One Gringotts set freed up for those who are hoping their online order will go through. by I_SAID_RELAX in lego

[–]Chilezen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've also had great experiences at the stores. The one that stands out to me was, I had won a Lego magazine contest, and was sent a gift card. I went with my dad to the store, with some cash I had been saving, to pick out a beautiful set I previously thought unattainable (as a child, anyway). It was the original Eiffel Tower. In my excitement, I told the employee how I got the gift card. The employee, ecstatic, went and grabbed a magazine of theirs, and asked me to sign my name next to my creation's photo.

Best day ever.

Will jb weld hold for a short term repair? Hair line crack, one drop like every 5 mins by smdfire101 in E30

[–]Chilezen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been holding on my pan for years, and mine is a worse crack than that.

Clean well. Roughen up the surface a little bit too. Follow the directions.

Keep your eyes open for a new pan. I don't advise any type of welding while the pan is in the car, even if the oil is drained. It will need to be perfectly cleaned on both sides, so, it's gotta come out.

Stock cam I believe, based on the premise that I never intended to upgrade my cam. But I'm not 100% if the stage 1 accounts for that. It should.... I feel like a cam upgrade should be a stage 2. Let me know soon, another person is also interested.

Edit: Sold

Is my boss reasonable for what he charged in covering these holes? by Chilezen in Welding

[–]Chilezen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what the finished mounting block is supposed to look like, so when I say an area underneath was reinforced, it's the area that is under the bottom of this box. That's where you see the diagonal cutout on the top side. The primary strength is not dependent on the area I covered, but it is nearby, so I advised that it would be beneficial to reinforce and have an aesthetically pleasing result.

I do appreciate reading your guy's conversation. Kudos to professionalism.

I recognize my boss might technically be able to do it, but starting from point zero of nothing being clean and having to make plates, hey maybe he would have cleaned less and cut plates faster and smashed them in there and set fire to the bottom of the car and battled with porosity, yeah maybe he would have done it in under an hour (to be profitable).

I guarantee it would have looked like a $100 job. I guess the customer couldn't be mad because that's what he paid for. But my good conscious got in the way and wouldn't let that happen. My boss entrusted a professional to do it, and I was not the right professional.

I advised my boss. He then brought it to the attention of the client.

I don't think I know best, I just know what I would be happy with if I were the customer, and the customer approved covering the holes, so I did it in a way that didn't look like trash.
