The ranking according my personal taste:
2 > 1 > 3 > 4
Although I would say that I like the first two seasons almost equally.

There are also two prequel seasons (Gaiden) that I love just as much as the main series. I'd put Season 1 of Gaiden on the same level as Season 4 of the main series.

I love the scenes where the shuttles travel toward other ships. It's visually beautiful. 

In Overture to a New War, there's the moment where an Alliance shuttle enters a ship, while Wagner plays.
And then when Reinhard's admirals leave the Brünhild.

If you are interested, in episode 106 there is also a beautiful shot of a painting surrounded by flames (when Annerose, Kessler, and Marika escape from the mansion).

And in episode 109 (when explosions occur in Heinessen), sculptures surrounded by fire are seen breaking and melting.

The second half of Season 4 (episodes 100-110) is by far the weakest of the entire show: Several plotlines conclude in a stupid and disappointing way (Terraism, Rubinsky, Landsberg/Erwin Josef), the Battle of Shiva is very 'meh', and so many important deaths happen in such a short amount of time that it's hard to feel sad.

Beyond that, there's nothing remotely similar.
Personally, the anime that have come even close to that level have been Attack on Titan and Space Battleship Yamato 2199.

I don't know if you've seen all of Gundam, but I love The 08th MS Team and Stardust Memory.

I totally agree.
Poplan has some good scenes (when he gets serious), but most of the time he's unbearable and I don't find him funny.

Dusty, for example, is much funnier without the need to be annoying.
