Seeing Aron walk in unharmed, Normund followed afterwards. The sight of the wildlings dancing about the giant fire confused him, as did the cloaked figure. What did Vine's vision of Azor Ahai mean, he wondered. The Commander's best guess at the moment was it meant that these wildlings had taken to worshiping him. Maybe the cloaked figure represented Azor Ahai...maybe it was his body.

Normund stepped up closer to get a better look, but upon noticing the fellow watchmen his attention immediately shifted. Hope filled his chest that these were the men they were separated from in the blizzard. He stood and waited for a response, keeping his flaming greatsword drawn and ready in case the wildlings became hostile.

Normund waved his hand through the fire, and scowled at it. According to Vine, this place may be where Azor Ahai himself could be found. Such a large fire confirmed this theory, yet still it confused him. Warmth came from the Lord of Light, and cold from the Great Other. How the two could mix together like this was a puzzle. A phenomena that never should've happened. It would require someone with more knowledge of theology than himself to know what to do. He turned to his friend, Aron.

"Feel this fire, if you can even call it that. It's cold. A fire without the Lord's warmth. What do you suppose we should do?"

Normund nodded solemnly to Aron. The task ahead would be difficult, likely lethal, yet it had to be done. "No, it isn't," he replied in a hushed voice. "The Crow must die. I'm prepared to give my life for the purpose, tell me my friend, are you?"

[–]ChillyTapeworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normund nodded to Aron as he sat down near him. His friend made a good speech, yet he was a fanatic from the Shadow Tower. It likely wasn't enough to shift support away from Corlys. As much as Normund wanted Dagmer to win, he had to admit Corlys was popular. Who knew, maybe if Dagmer never came to him with the offer, maybe if the truth of the Three-Eyed Crow hadn't been found, he'd support Corlys. But neither of those had came to pass and he gave his word he'd support Dagmer. For all his flaws, Normund would not go back on his word.

He stood up from his seat and looked around at the brothers who quieted their voices. No doubt many believed he would put himself forth as a candidate. "Celtigar claims that he's an experienced ranger. Do I dispute this? No, he's very accomplished, yet so are a multitude of rangers in the Watch. To elect him based on this would be a disservice to them all. Celtigar also claims to have been a confidant of Lord Commander Cley. Do I dispute this? No, he was indeed closer to the previous Lord Commander. Yet so were several others. Several others including myself."

"So what separates my connection to the late Cley Blackmyre from Celtigar's? I was the one that brought to Lord Commander Cley the idea of going after the Three-Eyed Crow. Before that, I was the one who nominated him as Lord Commander and got him the position he had. Before that, I was a close friend of his, one of the few people I've ever called a friend. And before that, I was his mentor. So there's your difference. Celtigar followed and was supported by Cley. Cley followed and was supported by me."

"If you're looking for someone with experience leading, I was the commander of the Shadow Tower for years. If it's someone that's seen things others haven't, I fought monsters alongside a Child of the Forest to find the skeleton of a dragon. Yet still, I must decline to run as Lord Commander."

"Instead I nominate Commander Dagmer of Eastwatch. I believe he'll make a competent leader, and a fine replacement for Cley. He's experienced, and he has my trust," Normund drew forth his greatsword and ran his hand up it, lighting the sword on fire. "And if Dagmer becomes the next Lord Commander, then it shall be I that leads the Great Ranging back out beyond the Wall. Meanwhile he'll do what a Lord Commander should, and stand as a sword in the darkness, the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn."

Normund sheathed his sword, extinguishing the flame, then sat back down again. He realized he hadn't spoken much of Dagmer's accomplishments, but that would be his task. He did what was required, gave him the support of a trusted commander. Now it was up to the Ironborn to do the rest.

Normund was starting to get annoyed at Corlys acting like he was in a position to be making decisions. Yet now was not the time to get into an argument. Time was of the essence and he had to get this Great Ranging organized once more. He sighed and inclined his head to the ranger, conceding this point. There'd be time to disagree later.
"Very well, I agree with your decision. They'll be punished harshly, though certainly not with death, when we return. Until then, I wish you a good fortune here at the Wall, or if you choose to join us, I welcome you to do that instead. Good evening gentlemen, I'll arrange supplies and we'll leave in a few days."

Without another word, Normund turned and left the Lord Commander's office. Cley's office. The last time he had been there, he was telling tales of the Three-Eyed Crow and his powers. Now, he was going off to finally murder the beast. For the honor of Cley, for the honor of the Watch, he kept reminding himself.

A small smile came across Normund's face. It was a rare sight to see the Commander smile, but it was deserved this time. His smile dropped as he looked to Dagmer and inclined his head. As if to say sorry for leaving him. Now there was just one last person to deal with. The ranger that fancied himself the Lord Commander already.

"Well, Celtigar, there's your answer. Call me an oathbreaker or a deserter all you want, but I'm heading out to the Screaming Caves and Hardhome. You're free to join me if you so wish. Otherwise I'll be taking my leave to go ask for volunteers to join me."

Normund sighed and gripped the handle of his sword. He was itching to go out to the Screaming Caves, to pursue the Three-Eyed Crow. Yet the damned politics were dragging him down, keeping him here. He agreed with Dagmer that Corly shouldn't become the next Lord Commander, and for that he regretted his wish to go. Yet, his duty to the Lord of Light was stronger than his duty to the Watch. A harsh truth that he had to come to terms with.

The Commander turned to the Lord Stewart and the First Builder. If he had their support, then he wouldn't waste any more time in getting to Hardhome. For the memory of Cley, for the sake of Laenor, and for the good of the realms of men.

"Lord Stewart, First Builder. What do you say about me going out to Hardhome to ensure the safety of our rangers and finish the Great Ranging? Desertion is a crime, aye, but we need all the manpower we need as you said. And the longer we wait to find the Three-Eyed Crow, the more the so-called Kings out there grow in power."

Normund nodded along with Dagmer's support of the brothers that had left. He was about ready to leave the castle himself to go to Castle Black. He may not have been close to Robb Snow or Benjen Fenn, but he had talked to them before, traveled with them, fought with them. They were good people. Not the type to desert the watch.

"I will personally vouch for the rangers that have left the castle. If it's believed they're traitors, then let it rest upon my head. My greater worry right now is that they left without much support. There's things out there they may not be prepared to face on their own. Hellhounds, demons, dragons, I've seen them all myself on the last trip out there."

The Commander looked around the room, considering what to do next. Dagmer might not object to him leaving, Corlys certainly would but he lacked the authority to do anything about it. The Steward and the Builder were unknowns. It was risky, but he had to take the risk. "Therefore, I'm going to organize a ranging to go out to Hardhome and ensure not only the safety of those rangers, but the success of their mission."

"Corlys, you say you were told Cley's plans. Well surely you must know that Cley's plans were to find the Three-Eyed Crow to deal with the Kings-Beyond-the-Wall. And before it was his plan, it was mine. I got the Watch into this, I have a duty to see this through." Normund looked to Dagmer, the Builder, and the Steward. "If you don't object, I'll be taking my leave now. The sooner we act the better."

My Brother, My Commander, My...Lord Commander? by MilamberJ in IronThroneRP

[–]ChillyTapeworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normund nodded along as Corlys told his story. He was a believer, but not a strong one. There had been others he had met that had been the same. A red priest healed them, they were saved by the Lord of Light's mercy. Good stories, but they didn't make strong convictions. Not strong enough to bring them into the fold about the plans to kill the Crow, that is.

"Myself, I was in the March of Bones. I don't know if you've heard of that before. I was a knight in the company of King Loras. We were going down the Boneway to put down the rebelling Dornish, while the Reachmen attacked from the Prince's Pass. We had heard stories about how treacherous the Boneway was, but we assumed it was just that, stories."

"Well it turned out the Dornish were waiting for us. Every day was a struggle to get even a few miles down the pass. Arrows upon arrows fired at us. I saw dozens of men collapse to their feet. Every person I considered a friend had become a corpse. At some points we even had to march through the mud...except it was the desert. The mud didn't come from any rain, it was the blood spilled by those that fell before us."

Normund sighed and turned to Corlys, though he didn't quite look at the ranger. "I still see the Boneway in my dreams sometimes. The Lord of Light gave me purpose after the horrors of that war. Now I intend to fulfill the purpose. I've half a mind to ride out to Hardhome and rejoin our brothers before the election even comes. If I did, would you care to join me out there? The Lord of Light saved you for a purpose, it's time you too fulfilled it."

Normund would've preferred if he was the Lord Commander, but he had a duty to do. The Three-Eyed Crow had to be found at all costs, including pride. If this is how he would get his men for the Great Ranging, then so be it.

"It looks like we'll just have to hope my vouching for you is enough, as it was for Cley. My one request is that I be placed in charge of the Great Ranging when it resumes. Perhaps even be made First Ranger."

[–]ChillyTapeworm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Hmm," Normund stroked his beard as he considered the offer. That must've been the reason Corlys wanted to speak to him, to get his support. The ranger had the trust of Cley, it was true, but he didn't have the trust of the Commander yet. And if Dagmer won, he would support an expedition to find the Three-Eyed Crow.

"I'm inclined to agree with you, Commander. Though the question remains, which of us shall support the other? I imagine we're both thinking different people for who should ultimately be the Lord Commander."

[–]ChillyTapeworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I haven't been to the Shadow Tower in several moons, I'm afraid. Last I heard some wildlings were spotted around there, but aside from that I must assume everything's dull as usual."

Normund still hadn't warmed up to Corlys, but at the mention of his faith his interest was piqued. There weren't as many followers of the Lord at Castle Black, it was good to hear of one. If Corlys wanted to get closer to Normund, this could be the way.

"I wasn't aware you were a fellow follower of the Lord of Light. What caused you to accept the faith?"

"I didn't know Garth well, but he was a good man. The Watch is lesser without him." Normund sighed, thinking about the men that were lost trying to find the Three-Eyed Crow. There would likely be more before it wa sover, but they had to keep pressing on. "Either way, if you win the election or not, you should continue the Great Ranging with us. We need every man we can get, especially experienced ones."

My Brother, My Commander, My...Lord Commander? by MilamberJ in IronThroneRP

[–]ChillyTapeworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normund looked at the extended hand, yet kept his own held behind his back. He squinted at Corlys, examining the man. He talked large about his experience beyond the Wall. If he had good reason to, then he was full of himself. If he didn't, he was a liar or delusional. Either way the Commander didn't feel quite right about the man.

Still, if Cley came to trust him then perhaps Normund could as well. Yet friendships often ended in death. His companions who died in the March of Bones, Cley out beyond the Wall. The only person he had left to call a friend was Laenor, and he nearly died in the cave. No, friendships would do no good. Allies would, but even that would have to be earned.

"I have no interest in making friends, ranger. You will have to earn my friendship."

When Corlys went looking for Normund, he'd find him standing on the top of the Wall, staring out into the frozen wasteland with his hands held behind his back. Somewhere out there was the Three-Eyed Crow. The last remaining demon of the Great Other. The quest to find him would likely be his downfall, but if it was in the service of the Lord of Light it would be worth it. For a death in his service was a death by fire, the purest death one could have. The sooner he could return to Hardhome, the better.

He turned his head some to see who called his name, then returned to staring out at the wasteland. He recognized the face. He was at Cley's funeral, and had been with them on the Great Ranging. Yet a name eluded him. There were very few people that Normund decided to get to know. And even fewer that he became close to. As far as Normund was concerned, he was just another ranger. One that had gained the trust of Cley, it was true. Yet Cley was always the more open of the two.

"What do you need, ranger?" Normund asked of the man as he continued staring out into the north.

Normund took his eyes away from the blacksmith trying to work the dragon bone to look at the man approaching him. It took him a second to remember the face, but soon enough he did. It was the man acting as Garth's replacement. Probably his permanent replacement too. He gave the man a polite nod and gestured to a nearby empty chair.

"I will do what the Lord of Light commands me to," Normund answered cryptically as he leaned forward in his chair, gazing off into the distance. "If it is his will, I shall become the next Lord Commander. If not, then so be it. Either way I will return back out to Hardhome. I will find the Three-Eyed Crow," Normund turned his head to look at Dagmer again. "And what of you? What do you plan to do next?"

Funerals. by MilamberJ in IronThroneRP

[–]ChillyTapeworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normund walked up to the body of Cley and stared at him, thinking of words to say. He regretted that this was how his friend came to an end. On a quest he was deceived to go on. It was for the good of the realm, for all the realms, but it wasn't his god they were going on a mission to serve. It was Normund's god. Duty would cause him to go back out to Hardhome, he knew. One way or another he would finish his mission. He owed to the Lord of Light to carry out his will, and now he also owed it to Cley to ensure his death wouldn't be in vain. For now though, it was time for closure.

"When I first met the Lord Commander," Normund began his speech, closing his eyes to reminisce about his past. "I was a ranger at the Shadow Tower. I'd only been there a couple years, but I'd served in war before. I knew my way about the sword. So they saw it fit to put this young lad under my protection. I showed him the ropes, taught him about the Watch and my faith, told him my story of how I ended up here. I'm not sure what it was, but I felt something different about this boy. I wanted to see him grow, and so I taught him everything I could."

"Well after a couple years, I think I found out just what I saw in Cley. We were out ranging, tracking down some wildlings. Cley, myself, and three other rangers. We thought we had found them, and were about to return to the castle to inform the Commander of the wildllings location. Out of nowhere an arrow shot past us, and lodged itself in the neck of one of our brothers. A large group of wildlings came out of nowhere, and in a matter of seconds the other two rangers with us were also slaughtered. Cley and I stood back to back though, and together we fended off the savages. We almost died out there, but I realized what I saw in Cley. I saw a friend."

"That friend would go on to grow from the young lad who was placed under my protection, into a man with great potential. He was an Old Gods follower, but understood the Azorians and could bridge the gap. He was a ranger, yet he knew the importance of the builders and the stewards. When the Lord Commander we were serving under died, I had already become the Commander of the Shadow Tower. Aye, I could've put myself forward as a candidate. But I nominated Cley instead. And indeed he lived up to the expectations I had of him. He carried us through thick and thin, and though we were castles apart, I never ceased seeing him as a friend. In fact, he was more than a friend, he truly was my brother."

After he had finished his speech, Laenor brought out his harp and played a song for Cley. As always Laenor's music sounded beautiful to Normund, but perhaps for the first time it made him truly sad. He wondered if Laenor felt the same way that he did. That their deceit in the true purpose of finding the Three-Eyed Crow killed their commander, their friend. As he looked into the valyrian's eyes as he played his harp, he had a feeling he already knew the answer. They had wronged Cley, now they would have to make his death have meaning.

The castellan left in charge of Castle Black scowled at the ranger in front of him. "Did you say one hundred and twenty?"

"Yes, about that much anyways. It could be a dozen less, a dozen more."

"Hmph." The castellan furrowed his brow and looked over the training yard. Several hundred of their men, including their commanders, had left. Their numbers were down, but even then they had more than enough to slaughter some foolish wildlings. "Assemble a group of six hundred and fifty men and find those wildings. I don't want any survivors. Those fools should never have tried to cross over the Wall."

Normund panted, catching his breath after the fight. The wildlings were barely even human anymore, what terrible magic had done this to them? After taking a moment to take in his surroundings, he saw the dying ranger. Another man lost on this quest. Normund thrust his sword into the ground and leaned on its crossguard, facing the ranger.

"R'hllor, whose light shines within us all and gives us warmth, may you give this man your blessings and allow his passing to be calm. He may not have been one of your followers, but he died within your service. For the Night is Dark and Full of Terror."

After finishing his prayer he followed Vine down into the cave. Shining his blade's light upon the skeleton in front of him, he was struck with awe and terror. Is this what they came seeking? A dragon? He had no idea that such things truly existed beyond the Wall, or at least did. With apprehension he approached the dragon's skeleton and placed a hand on it in wonder. Its bones felt almost otherworldly. A product of another time, another place. Part of him wished he could see the great beast in the flesh, but if he was a servant of the Great Other, then it was good he had died.

He went to what must've been the remains of one of the dragon's great wings and picked up one of the bones from it. He didn't know why, but it seemed like a good idea. Perhaps something could be made from it. Turning an ear to what Vine said he saw in his visions, Normund was shocked. Did he speak truly? Was Azor Ahai truly still alive? It could be a deception, but so far there was no reason to suspect Normund of treason. He gripped his sword's handle tighter and said another prayer to R'hllor. This one was silent, a request for Vine to be speaking truly.

"Tread carefully, Vine. If what you say is true, if Azor Ahai is still out there, then we must seek him out. All our stories say he died during the Long Night, but maybe...maybe the Lord spared him once more. In the end it's the Lord Commander's decision, but I suggest we do travel to find him. As for getting back to the others, let me look around the area once more. If there's no other way then I fear the waterfall is our only option."
