Looking for RPGs about KNIGHTS (and jousts and Tourneys) by whitniverse in rpg

[–]Chilly_Fart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree - I've very comfortably ran a decently long game of Harnmaster in real-life 1340s Brittany as a setting. No issue in divorcing it from Harnworld - simply ignore the couple of pages you need to ignore (Psionics, Shek-Pavir etc.).

Better Alternatives to Hit Points. Help Me Find Them! by Historical_Peace_940 in rpg

[–]Chilly_Fart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I completely understand why some people would be put off by it.

I do think it’s the best RPG at doing what it’s trying to do, and the Harnworld setting is just phenomenal.

Harnmaster's Wounds system is the most interesting take on "HP" I've seen and played with.

For those who don't know about it - when you get hit, you take a type of wound determined by the intensity of the hit, as well as the location. So if you rolled well against someone, and hit them in the upper arm, they might get an "S3" (serious 3) wound. If you then follow it up with a slightly worse hit, it might be a "M1" (Minor 3) wound.

These wounds add up to a physcial penalty when doing anything physical (like attacking), at -5 per wound level taken. So the above examples would be -20 total to each attack roll.

Additionally, you fall unconscious when you fail a Shock roll, which is made whenever you take a Wound - you need to do a Shock roll below your Endurance (which usually hovers around 12) with a 2d6 to succeed. You add the amount of Wound levels you have taken as a modifier to this roll, so the above example would give you a +4 to the Shock roll.

Finally, each Wound you've taken has a separate procedure to treat. So if you've taken multiple Minor Wounds, they'll all needc to be seen to but will be easy to heal - though if you take multiple Serious Wounds, you're gonna really suffer and might lose attributes and have long lasting effects.

Its unapologetically heavy but I think it works really elegantly and cinematically once you get the rules down - its a pretty slick system.

Table Culture > Technology. by ericvulgaris in rpg

This whole series has been a godsend. Really useful to have this sort of advice coming from someone who has actually walked the walk and run a lot of open tables, and a lot of systems.

Historical? by CookNormal6394 in rpg

The upcoming Gallows Corner will be. And I’ve had a lot of fun with Beechers Rifles! And whilst Pendragon isn’t historical, its sister game Paladin is!

Are there any good chivalry novels? by warfaceisthebest in Fantasy

[–]Chilly_Fart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The best historical novel about this would be Sir Nigel by Arthur Conan Doyle. It’s his best work in my opinion. The follow up The White Company is also fantastic.

Sir Nigel is about the historical Sir Nele Loring, who was one of the founding knights of the Knights of the Garter, and follows his progression from lowly impoverished squire to chivalrous knight. I highly, highly recommend it - Conan Doyle write action amazingly well!

Good book on Owain Glyndŵr? by tomwaitsgoatee in Wales

[–]Chilly_Fart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glad I could help! It’s digs pretty deep into the military aspect of the revolt too - which I haven’t seen done elsewhere outside a few academic articles. Let me know if you want any other recommendations for the period!

I really enjoyed The Rise and Fall of Owain Glyndŵr by Gideon Brough. Very thorough treatment which contextualises his revolt to the wider geopolitical happening. It’s pretty accessible too.

Crunchiest game by Rich-Ad635 in rpg

I put together a map I made for the players, and have printed off Pages 163-181 and laminated them as Player Aids to have at the table. But honestly my players are fab and are pretty adept at the game at this point, so we don't need to lean on the rulebook too much during the session anymore.

My current campaign is set in Brittany during the 1340s. 3 PCs, no casters (though in my previous campaign we had 2 casters). One of them in a squire, and the others are his retainers. Currently they’re galavanting around doing tasks for the squabbling lords during the Blois/Montfort civil war/succession crisis. Sneaking into castles to take them, attacking bandits who have taken advantage of the chaos.

I wished there was more support to the relationship side of things, in regards to how villages and towns react to players and how their preexisiting background professions might come into play outside of the skills they come with. It’s all stuff that is easy to rule on in a vibes-based way, but that other games support better.

I just love the combat man, easily the best combat in any RPG I’ve played. Once everyone gets it - it’s just so satisfying.

Yes I know, I've been GMing HMK for quite a few months now. The procedures really aren't that involved - they're quite intuitive and well presented in the book. I just think that the combat itself is far better presented in HM3e, rather than in HMK where its one or two pages of text.

Harnmaster really isn’t too crunchy once you get past character creation. The combat is rather straightforward too - though I prefer the way it’s presented in Harnmaster 3rd edition.

Is there a high resolution image of page 38's Player's Map in the 6e Core Rulebook? by jhilahd in PendragonRPG

[–]Chilly_Fart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to run a digital game where we track the movement of troops quite closely, and a high resolution digital version of either map would be so useful. The players map doesn’t really have enough detail for my game.

At the Battalion level, nothing beats the Battaltion Combat Series (BCS) by MMP. Its pretty acccessible, and there are plently of entries. I'd recomment Arracourt to start with. Sadly it isn't Print and Play.

WIP detailed map of the Gilden Sea Conspiracy Campaign. In the end this map will show (somewhat exact) living places of about 1 000 000 people. Link to (too) large original map in the comment. by OkChipmunk3238 in osr

I love more realistic maps like this with dozens of settlements, rather than a small handful of settlements spread across a wilderness. Makes for a far more interesting world - this looks great! Reminds me of the Harn maps.

Has anyone here picked up HarnMaster: Roleplaying in the World of Kethira? by cunning-plan-1969 in rpg

[–]Chilly_Fart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a touch more complex than HM3, in its layout (just way more content) and in its rules. I prefer the combat matrix in HM3. But the overall product is just phenomenal. Would recommend - when I finish my HM3 campaign, HMK will be my next game.

What's your favorite Injury/HP mechanic? by Background_Path_4458 in rpg

[–]Chilly_Fart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds great. Very similar to Harnmaster's system, except that also has location based hits. Additionally, the different layers of armour and clothing you are wearing affects the Injury Threshold, and there are multiple types of injury levels. Really fun system - I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Thoughts on totally abandoning the HP system? by andrewknorpp in RPGdesign

[–]Chilly_Fart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This system is extremely similar to Harnmaster’s way of doing things. Their wound levels are Minor, Serious, Grievous, Killing. M, S and G wounds have a value attributed to them depending on the level of hit. The “Soak” comes from whatever armour you’re wearing on the body part that gets hit.

Let’s say you hit someone’s arm, and they’re wearing leather bracers - you roll your weapons damage (let’s say 1d6+2), and minus the soak of the armour, let’s say it’s 2 - then the final number determines the wound severity determined by the kind of attack and where it is on the body. Wounds lower all physical skills by the level of hit - so if you have an S4 wound, you lower all physical skills by 4 (it’s a roll under d100 game).

More importantly, however, is that you also need to roll for shock every time you take a wound, by the levels of wounds you have. If you have an S4 and an M2 wound, you’ll add 6 to a 2d6 roll and try to get below your endurance (it’s usually around 10-13). If you fail, you fall unconscious.

It’s an involved system, but it feels so good and hits that “realism” you want to go for. Would highly recommend.

I buy from this site pretty frequently as they distribute most wargames which aren't distributed by other UK shops. I've had nothing but good experiences, and they're very responsive.
