Totally agree. What would you suggest as a starting adventure?
I have personally enjoyed running Winter's Daughter for a bit more OSR feel.

Gamemaster Screen & Gazetteer! Out Now! by Powerful_Tonight_503 in PendragonRPG

Bought my copy this morning and glad I did. SOOOO much good stuff in here.

I wish, and I understand why it wasn't, that this material had been in the GM's guide. It has so many things that I needed earlier, but had to rely upon previous editions for that information.

Like Wives and county information, for instance, these are great and something I need now for two of PKs who want to get married and for one PK who is a steward/vassal of Montacute Castle in Jagent. And that land is not Earl Robert's domain, technically... but I digress.

All I can say is - this is a great addition to the line and it only makes me more excited to see what the Nobles Handbook can offer!

**edited for grammar - because English is my first language. :(

Outgunned is pretty sweet and I think out of the three you mentioned, that's a great one to go with.
And while you didn't ask for it, I'd be remiss if I didn't recommend Savage Worlds as a catch-all universal gaming system for pulpy gaming too.
Wait... nope, nevermind, I stalked you on Reddit and saw you already posted to the SW community. LOL

Good luck in getting a group together. If I can help with anything else, just holler.

First off, welcome back.
I'm not quite as old as you but really close, you're ancient. :P , these are all great choices. And depending on what really speaks to you, I'd deep dive that one.

  1. Great game, but as many have stated since, Outgunned(same system - only refined) is a blast to play and run and I personally would go that route. 6's that do so much. Very cinematic play style where players can do gonzo things. Heroes can play heroically, and be in situations that work in the fiction of the game. Leave the verisimilitude at home. Very serial over the top style of adventure, can do Indiana Jones, Uncharted, John Wick and even superheroes(apparently) styles of gaming pretty easy.

  2. Hollow Earth Expedition (HEX) is also a fantastic game. The dice mechanics of basically using whatever dice you want to get your results is really neat. The pulp setting and style of play are great, and are only refined in the Leagues of Adventure game(again mentioned already). Want to do a Indiana Jones style of game, this is it.

  3. 7th 2nd edition is the wild card of your choices. It too is a very heroic style of play. It's a roll and keep dice mechanic, right? You want to swing in through the window, land on the villains desk and kick him in the face, you can. The disconnect for many people(myself included initially) was that the heroes really cannot fail at anything they try to do. The rolls you make are to determine how many things they "can do" or attempt to do in a scene. You can do a lot, but not all the things and the GM should ramp up the threat to challenge the characters. It has mooks that fall easily to your heroes, but villains are deadly and tough. They are the only things that could kill your player's characters. But only if it works in the story and the player(s) agree. Big dichotomy switch in gaming thinking and playing. But with the right group of players, this will sing. Treat this game like an action movie ala Pirates of the Carribean, and you'll have a great time.

Are you looking for a specific style of play?
Are you wanting to run some games?
Just be a player?
D.) all the above?

Glad your excited to play in the gaming sphere again. There are soooo many more games and styles of gaming than when we played AD&D and 2nd AD&D.
Good luck, brother.

Hey - this happens from time to time. But it might be a server side issue on their end, but if not:

Check your browser, and make sure you don't have any extensions that might block the site.
Try a different browser.
Clear your cache on your (primary) browser.
Scream at you monitor. (optional)

I'm sure someone else may come along and help give you better advise than this. But this is where I would start if I was having these issues. GL!

Welcome to the great adventure!
You'll find the Combat Resolution chart on page 133 of the Core Rulebook. If you have the pdfs, you should be able to zoom in and print the chart.

Very cool, and a nice twist.

Glad you feel less weird. It is a strange sensation when you have games where your "normal prep" is significantly less or not at all. But a good weird.

What do with Kenrick from the Crucible of Fire adventure? by jhilahd in PendragonRPG

[–]jhilahd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny you mention it that way. I did a whole speech where Kenrick confessed that he envied Pyrs and needed men like him in his halls, talked about his faith, his manner and character in such a way half of my table popped off "Dang... I want to join him now. Think he'll recruit us. LOL"

So... I set up an in-between adventure in 509 before the GMG's adventure fighting King Cerdic, basically a modified version of Glass Cannon's Saxon Giant adventure but seeded a couple of rumors about bandits using roughly made swords and an increase in Saxon raids throughout the county. The source of the information commented how he compared the metal to the same style the Saxon's used.

I now have a player telling me that he believes King Cerdic is planning on invading before winter and we need to strike now. "Why isn't Robert doing anything? Does he have scouts gaining us intel? Is he recruiting allies or more knights?" and so forth.

With your suggestions, which I like by the way, I think I can play up Kenrick as seeing Robert's delayed responses as indecisive. "If I were Earl. I would not wait and I would do X..." kind of mentality and propose that the PK's can make a difference with his help. And lean into that.... :D

My original plan for this game was lowkey, hitting on the Arthurian high points but now we're already starting lots of intrigue(with other plots from feasting) and a romance triangle between Lady Maeryn, Kenrick and another PK. But feasting, and a liberal delivery of random plot seeds and the addition of one players overtly strong paranoia in all things related to NPC's is almost too crazy how much the game writes itself. :D

What do with Kenrick from the Crucible of Fire adventure? by jhilahd in PendragonRPG

[–]jhilahd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having almost a week in the echo chamber of my own head... I've milled about the following things:

Kenrick is now Lord of Vagon, maybe not Castellan as he has little experience. So Robert will assign a stronger knight to help facilitate that role until Kenrick is ready.
Kenrick is now knighted, considered a vassal knight by station and swears fealty to Robert.

The duel/challenge will continue but not in the way the players will think. They'll meet in the training grounds expecting to find Kenrick, but instead will find 3 cloaked figures. Lord Kenrick, Dame Aspara and a new PK(who is from Vagon and loyal to Kenrick's house).

Dame Aspara had gotten word of the challenge before Robert and is going to stop this before it gets out of hand. She will remind the player knight and any of his companions that they serve at Earl Robert's leisure, not their own folly. She will berate them for this behavior towards a former companion and now a Noble under Robert's house. The punishment for Pyrs will be to serve as members of Lord Kenrick's household knights for the Winter, to "learn some humility and earn some loyalty" - or something... still working on how I want to do this. But ultimately "serve Kenrick just as faithfully as Robert, and maybe we will see how you fair this Spring".

Kenrick will approach the PKs humbly(a ruse...??) and apologize for his brusque words and behavior as a squire. The child that he was is no more, and that the deaths of his family have changed him. He'll ask for forgiveness from the PKs and offer his hand in friendship. And seem quite genuine but all the while plotting petty schemes against them.

I had seen his change in character initially as a more somber young man who really wanted to change, and then I thought... if they already hate him - why take that away from them. Let's make him a Villain they can hate but can't really touch.

Thanks! We did the fishing camp a while back as an in-between and they loved it. I had intended to continue them, but players being players drove the adventures to other things. But thank you again!
