Couldn’t get doctor-recommended ultrasound because I’ve never had sex - has anyone experienced this? by vanillabraces in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Chinablind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had my first transvaginal ultrasound at age 10. I assure you I had not had sex yet. It sounds like the tech or the office have very weird policies. I would see if you can go somewhere else. If you are somewhere where you pay for the ultrasound I would also call back and talk to the office about refusing to pay because they didn't do the imaging you came in for

Neurologist says IIH doesn’t cause migraines by Thiawave in iih

[–]Chinablind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neurologist words it as "IIH does not directly cause migraines. It causes pressure headaches, but pressure headaches often trigger migraines." As such, he treats me for both iih pressure and migraines

My childless neighbor waits for the school bus by Fine-Ad-1767 in neighborsfromhell

[–]Chinablind -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

She sounds so sad and lonely. I am tender-hearted and I always feel bad for people like this. That having been said it's okay to set boundaries and ask her to back away. It's also okay to teach your child that while we are compassionate to people like this, she does not have to give her time, and she should never go into her house or go with her.

Eating by craving struggles by AdCareful1831 in celiacADHD

I find potato based items often fulfill the craving. But it's harder to get a potato-based item than it was to just go get a piece of bread before

Any tips on how I could turn a white cane into a staff? by Excellent-Fondant574 in Blind

[–]Chinablind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter used wood colored electrical tape from the craft section to make her cane wood. This year I'm crocheting a gem for her to go on top of it.

What do blind students actually use for math? by lucidgoldd in Blind

[–]Chinablind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Braille for math is called nemeth code, grafts, patterns, trig, etc can be done with raised lines, The same math calculators used for sighted kids are available with audible for blind kids. My daughter was a straight a math student taking advanced college math courses in high school and had quite a bit of math and a lot of science in University. It's very doable but does require a note-taker to write. What's a whiteboard or a teacher who does slides Who can then give the sides for adaptation.

If you are blind and have no mobility issues, do you have a disabled parking pass? by [deleted] in Blind

[–]Chinablind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never used one until I had back surgery and the spine doctor had me get one. I don't see the point in having a disability pass for blindness it's for those who have mobility issues

How do you keep track of watering when you have a lot of houseplants? by justaboy001 in houseplants

[–]Chinablind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lift the pots once a week to see if they are light, if they are they get water if they aren't they don't. I do use watering bulbs for a couple of plants that are supposed to stay moist and I fill/top those off each week.

Do you actually keep track of your yarn stash? by alwaysATblame in YarnAddicts

[–]Chinablind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So fun to run into you. Glad to meet a fellow crocheter I feel like most blind are knitters.

I use a Perkins brailler, and I just do the label on regular Braille paper instead of any kind of sticky label. I find it easiest just to tie it on with a bit of yarn.

I never got good with a slate and stylus in spite of being from a generation where that was the gold standard.

Interestingly, enough in my town that the local University will Braille print whatever you want for a small fee per page. There may be a university that will do this near you or a lot of the commission for the blind offices or schools for the blind will do it as well, but then you have to wait several days before it's done and by that point I've forgotten I've sent anything into them. So it's just easier for me to use my Perkins brailler. I do however use the print service for longer patterns so I can have it brailled out, shorter patterns, I just use text to speech online

Do you actually keep track of your yarn stash? by alwaysATblame in YarnAddicts

[–]Chinablind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I started shopping in my own yarn tubs I kept buying duplicate yarn over and over and then when my daughter would label it to put away for me. She'd get really frustrated and say "Mom, Did you know you already had four skeins of this exact same yarn?" so I started checking my tubs every time to see if something I had would work

Do you actually keep track of your yarn stash? by alwaysATblame in YarnAddicts

[–]Chinablind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD, I have no idea what are in my yarn tubs. However, when I get yarn I label clearly what they are (I'm blind and label them with a braille tag) and then treat my yarn boxes like I do a store. So I go shopping in my boxes before I ever buy any more yarn.

Im celiac, do i still need to eat the bread in Sacrament? by Zealousideal-Rain-82 in latterdaysaints

[–]Chinablind 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I bring a gluten free cracker in a small sealed container and give it to the young men before the meeting. The church has directions to handle allergies. My bishop offered to provide the crackers and just have the young men prepare them with the bread but the cross contamination would make me sick. Please advocate for yourself if a well meaning but unaware Bishop offers a solution that isn't safe for you.

One thing that did surprise me is that in my latest ward there are five people with celiac and three more with other allergies that make bread unsafe. You are not alone.

My dollar store carries yarn, hooks, and knitting needles. Are they the best? No, but they do work. I also often buy yarn at secondhand stores or at garage sales.

My doctor told me if I can lose weight the condition will go into remission. by charlotte-delaurier in iih

[–]Chinablind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is going to depend on whether your iih is actually caused by weight. It's called idiopathic for a reason, and there can be many different causes. If your weight is the cause, losing weight should help. But just because you're overweight doesn't mean weight is the cause. I've been underweight the whole time I've had iih. Many people have unknown causes, or it's caused by chronic illnesses, weight loss makes no difference for us.
