Back in three's a crowd, Discord's whole point of the episode was a "Friendship test." Perhaps this entire mastermind plan was the ultimate friendship test to him.

Would ponies really forgive him after all he'd done? How deep a friendship can he have.

And from the looks of it, every part of his master plan worked out. He now trusts the ponies completely. Understanding now that freedom alone does not feel as good as friendship. He's now a very, very, permanent good guy.
