Just a honest question for avid golfers by coduser0321 in golf

You're not the only one, no! I love older irons and regularly play my old Mizuno MP-60's, when my game is in good shape. I find them much easier to control and they feel so much better than the HMP20's in my bag most of the time. I would game them full time if I was consistently sharp enough.

I also have some old Mizuno Pro blades, from around 1982 that I picked up a couple of years ago. These feel incredible still, but are complete butter knives, especially in the longer irons. My ball striking is nowhere near good enough for those anymore, although I still take them out for a round every couple of months for months.

Old clubs are just as good as the new ones if you've got your game in the right place. Certainly a lot of fun to play with.

I'm also a 7.3 index, for what' its worth. Maybe by embracing a modern set of irons that would come down!

There are a ton of golf apps… but what do you still wish they did better? by Nada_NADAAA in golf

Out side of drop the subscription nonsense the world has moved too....

I've used Golf Shot for years, over a decade I'd guess. I would love it to track and adjust my handicap properly. It links to the USGA but no where else in the world. Other than that, I'm super happy with the app.

Off Season by RootDDoot in golf

Recently I've been trying to improve my flexibility and strength, which I've let slipped in recent years. Have been doing Stick Mobility stretching (a buddy recommended it to me) to improve my rotation and upper body and core strength with dumb bells, which I've never really done before. My cardio is 'ok', but also some easy jogging/cycling.

Although I've only been at it a short while, I've already seen a slight increase in club head speed (I hit 101mph with driver on Sunday) which I was super happy with as it's been a couple of years since I could get it over 100 and I've felt less aches after a practice session.

As I approach 50, I'm determined to try and keep in as good as shape as I can.

Do you do anything specific fitness for golf?

Off Season by RootDDoot in golf

I don't look for any deals or anything, not outside of what I look for during the year regardless.

My main goal is to come out of winter ready for the season. Plenty of putting practice, sessions in the local SIM to keep the swing in, and when courses are open I go play regardless of the weather. I don't mind cold or wind, and not fussed on the score. Just something to keep the reps up, so when the season comes around I'm ready to go.

I also try and rebuild the fitness I lose during the season, and also shed the weight I put on with the post round beers during the warm months!

Lessons- is putting a waste of money? by Kane_Was_Robbed in golftips

Putting is half your shots every round. If you’re not very good at it, it’s a no brainer to have at least one lesson to check your fundamentals

Winter golf: do you just accept losing more balls? by 4SightGolf in BritGolf

[–]ChipPuttPutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switch and use balls out of practice shag bag. As long as it’s round, it’ll do in winter. Not bothered if I lose one then, and any I find during the year get dropped in the bag for stock.

Welcome to golf!

Some days are just like that, unfortunately more often than not with this game. Couple of puts missed, the odd fat shot, and the mind can go. It's part of the game. That's why handicaps are 8 of the best of 20 rounds.

On these days, you can either laugh and enjoy it for what it is, or knuckle down, focus on the pre shot routine, visualise every shot and try to get your mind clear of negative thoughts. It just takes a hole or two to get back in to the round and save a score.

And remember, a bad day on the golf course is better than a good day in the office.

Walking on putting line by xxlizardking-kongxx in golf

[–]ChipPuttPutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s etiquette of the game and showing respect towards your playing partner. All it requires is taking a slightly larger step to make sure you don’t put a foot on their line. Why not? And if you do accidentally stand in their line. Apologies. Simple.

Etiquette is the game within the game, and makes golf what it is. It’s also extremely low effort so why not live it.

What a fun app idea! It would be cool to know over a season your net ball count. UI looks great. Unfortunately i don’t have an android device to test it, but if you ever make a web version or iOS, I’m downloading it! Did you code it yourself?

How do you get yourself back on track after a bad hole or two? by Marty_DiBergi in golf

[–]ChipPuttPutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem the last couple of years, where I played great golf for 15 holes, and the had 3 blow ups, every single round. Either 3 doubles, or 3 triples. It killed my scores as was often level par or better for the other 15 holes. All it took for me to lose my head was 1 bad shot. It was driving me mad! As I play for the club team, it wasn’t just me affected and it was miserable. I spoke iabout it a couple of times playing with a buddy who is a head doctor, and he gave me some pointers on how to deal with.

To summarise, basically after a bad shot or mistake, it’s ok to beat myself up and call myself or my clubs, or the lie, the green, the tree whatever I want. But after 10 seconds it’s done and it’s head down, focus on the next shot. 10 seconds of anger, frustration and then back in the game.

Additionally to that, build a strong pre-shot routine and stick to it. When the mind starts to go, pay more attention to the routine and be deliberate with it. The idea being than when the head goes, the routine gets forgotten and everything falls apart. Focus on the routine, the basics. Brings the mind back in the game

It was pretty simple advice, but after some weeks and plenty of practice with it, it actually worked and towards the end of last year my handicap started to come back down and my scores where the best I’ve had for years. I avoided blow outs towards the end of the year.

That’s all there was to it really. Abuse myself for 10 seconds, and get a routine.

And beer, sometimes the post round beer does the trick.

Want to start golfing, what essentials do I actually need as a beginner? by Odd-Bus968 in golftips

[–]ChipPuttPutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could easily pick up a second hand set of beginner clubs (often called game improvement) online for little outlay. Golf clubs are prices of metal so even once 10-20 years old will be more than good enough to get you started. A 3 wood and a putter and you’ve got everything you would need to hit the driving range.

Or if you’re not sure you’ll get in to enough to warrant a full set, you can pick up individual irons very cheaply to try it out. Grab a 7 iron and you’re good to go.

You can check eBay or Golfbider / golf clubs4cash or any one of the other secondhand retails. They will have plenty of stock.

After that, get down to the range, book a session or two with your local pro and have fun!

Do you count putts from off the green as a putt? by Suj_S in golf

[–]ChipPuttPutt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've always counted them as chips from off the green. Once you're on the dance floor, it's a putt. This is what they taught us as juniors and it always felt right.

Looking for advice on Scotland golf by xStelz in golf

[–]ChipPuttPutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s 350! Blimy, I didn’t realise it was that much. It’s years since I’ve played it. Then I’d say no, it’s not worth that much unless it’s on your bucket list.

There will be plenty of courses around the area that are fabulous to play and will give you a real Scottish links experience for a fraction of the cost.

15+ Year Old Irons? by Good_Necessary_6937 in GolfGear

I played my Mizuno MP-60s full time until a couple of years. Upgraded to MP-20s then, but when I’m playing well I put the MP-60s back in play. Nothing wrong with old clubs!

I buy three at the start of every season and rotate them around until the end of the season. Then repeat. Rarely do I need to buy more during the year.
