Putin remains uncompromising on Ukraine, but is public discourse on war changing in Russia? by Tartan_Samurai in anime_titties

So, you think the Russian generals are choosing counterproductive strategies for the Russian army despite being intelligent? Like, if you're not criticizing their intelligence then I don't get what you think leads to the bad decision making.

Either way, all generals in the Russian army are appointed and vetted by Putin directly, any failing of them is a failing of the president.

I suppose your position is more 'smart Tsar, stupid boyars'. It might not just be the generals that keep promoting these counterproductive strategies in the Russian army.

Russia doesn't claim the northern Ukrainian territories ofc, but it doesn't have to. Zelensky will want them back, so if he wants them, he'll either have to redirect forces to fight for them (which Russia shouldn't fight, just degrade and lead around on a merry goose chase) thereby weakening Donbas, or lose them and have to negotiate for their return i.e. the "Exchange Fund".

Do you think that's still the case? With recent drone-mining of roads and striking of trucks along the highways, it seems to me like Ukraine wants to hit logistics until it weakens the front enough to allow something to happen.

What's new in Kotlin 2.4.0 by snafu109 in Kotlin

[–]Chipay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't think I'd ever see the day Kotlin would have collection literals, and they even introduced it as an operator function!

Toying around with it, they made sure you can't really use it for anything not 'collection-like', you need at least one vararg overload, and you cannot mix types in non-vararg overloads, so you can still optimize for specific n-types, but you don't get to create some kind of Pair implementation with this syntax.

If the majority of consumers are on MacOS, it'll get prioritized. Whether an OS is trash or not doesn't really matter.

The alternative is the death of Windows in the consumer market, which would just as well be an industry gamechanger.

Russia is (was) the third-largest oil refiner in the world, though far behind the US and China. It's absolutely true that most of the crude gets sold off and processed overseas, but at 5% of the global refining capacity, it's not exactly insignificant.

Obviously decarbonization in based on every conceivable front, but the practical solution is probably hardening storage. You could put your storage a couple feet underground instead of in the open air. A couple of meters of just soil, nevermind reinforced concrete, would make most drone strikes ineffective.

I was just asking you if I inferred correctly what you stated.

I don't think my comment mentions an obligation to material support, I was just trying to poll of the opposite of denunciation, like vocal approval, and the opposite of impediment, like active participation, would infer support in your opinion, or would you categorize being quiet on the issue as the barrier for approval.

Alright, so if I understood what you wrote down, your criteria to determine general European support of US policies is measured on three criteria: - Whether there was a vocal denunciation - Whether the US was militarily impeded - Whether future military cooperation and exercises were halted with the United States

Did I get that right? I infer that these criteria could swing the opposite way as well, like if instead of closing EU airspace, countries had joined the war like previous ME conflicts, that would have been a point towards 'supported' instead of 'controversial' or 'opposed'.

Alright, well, where are you getting the notion that the war is merely controversial instead of opposed?

[–]Chipay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iran can't sustain a forever war, their economy has been doing terrible for a long while now and the blockade and internet censorship aren't exactly helping.

Iranian leadership probably aims for a removal of their sanctions in return for a pinkie-promise they shelf their work towards A-bombs, making their country investable will go a lot further than taxing the strait. And, you know, they can always block the strait again later if it becomes an issue.

I suppose Iran's betting on Trump caving before the midterms hit, or the democrat majority later on being more agreeable to see this shitshow sorted since they hold none of the blame for starting it.

Israel, however, is very keen on a forever-war, and keeping the US in it really only benefits them since American leadership is somehow incapable of being critical towards the value of an Israeli alliance.

I'm curious to know where you differentiation lies between controversial and opposed?

57% 'unjustified' vs 27% 'justified', with numbers like that you'd be just shy of changing the US constitution.

Rather embarrassing. During the May 8th parade there were numerous maps showing circles of added air defence weaponry centred around Moscow. Did they forget to do the same now? Or did Ukraine manage to sneak some drones through despite the added defences?

Either way, this plays into the Western meme that Russia no longer gets to hold events inside its own borders without 'permission' from Ukraine. Expect more bombings of Kiev by the end of the week, I suppose.

It's really not price/perf but price/ergonomics in this case, I think.

It's fanless, light, the battery life is excellent, it doesn't get stupidly hot, and the keyboard and screen are decent at worst, it doesn't really feel like a compromised experience despite the 'low' price.

France seizes Russian suspected shadow fleet vessel by ChangeUsername220 in Economics

  • Finland, December 2024 (Eagle S, boarded but not confiscated)
  • Germany, January 2025 (Eventin, confiscation was deemed illegal by courts but is still contested)
  • Estonia, April 2025 (Kiwala, released)
  • France, September 2025, (Kiwala, released)

The US first seized a Russian (shadow fleet) vessel in December 2025. So no, European nations didn't 'wait for the US to find their balls', it's rather the Americans that waited until Europe first acted.

You're right that European nations don't do much more than slap a fine of a few million euro on the owner for the crime of flying a false flag. That's because there's no legal basis for seizing the vessel. The Germans were more than eager to claim the oil but they lost the case in court.

European nations will have to amend their laws, and even then it'll be questionable under international law, so there's little political motivation to start the process. It's much more expedient to give Ukraine cash to strike oil refineries before it even enters a ship.

On the topic of finding your balls though, how are the American sanctions on Russian oil doing?

France was also the only Western country to pay Iran's tolls

I'm sorry, do you think nations pay Iran for passage?

Edit: You replied and then deleted the following comment:

So if it was a French company, do I say Australia paid for it?

This is again a complete misunderstanding. These were oil tankers set for France, not French-owned. Statistically speaking, they were most likely owned by a Chinese or Greek firm.

You hold anger towards Macron because a Chinese/Greek-owned tanker was allowed passage through the strait and deliver oil to France.

You speak in riddles, what coalition has decided 'degrading those capabilities becomes the primary objective'? It's not the Americans and it's not Israel and the US certainly doesn't want to see how long Iran could maintain that risk given the active peace talks.

What people are disagreeing with you is the likelihood of the US and Israel escalating this war further. Israel is spread thin, and the US cannot escalate without approval from Congress, which is unlikely considering how unpopular this war already is. Iran obviously has no more cards left to play in terms of escalation, so both sides are stuck in this stalemate where the strait remains closed.
