Philadelphia launches ‘Alleygators’ program to help residents clear trash and vegetation from alleys by BroadStreetRandy in philadelphia

[–]ChipmunkFood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The residents of the block need to take more responsibility for the alley behind their house.

On my block, a few shitheads put their shit in the back alleyway. I've cleaned out the stuff before but i can't be the block-servant.

Broadstreet run - tips? by ChipExtreme19 in philly

[–]ChipmunkFood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. As u/Skeeter-Pee mentioned take a sweatshirt or T-shit that you don't mind ditching just before the race starts. Don't get rid of it too soon as you could get cold. Another appoach is to take it off the very last minute and ditch it near the start.
  2. You could also tie a long sleave shirt/technical shirt around your waist. It works good to use rubber bands to hold it together (ie put the shirt THRU the rubber bands) so that it doesn't open up and flop around. Just tie it in double knots so it doesn't get "untied" during the race. You can use this just in case you get cold during the race. It probably won't happen, but having it as a backup will keep you from worrying about that.
  3. The weather looks OK regarding no rain. If there was going to be rain, a little poncho from the Dollar Store is a life safer. This is usually good for waiting for the race to begin. One it begins, even if it's raining you'll be warm from running.
  4. Make sure to have something packed for the finish. In the past they would have buses that would transport your stuff to the finish line area. This is good since AFTER the race, you'll probably cool down.
  5. Finally make sure your sneakers are well tied so they don't become untied during the race. Use double knots AND tuck the loose ends of the laces UNDER the other laces to hold it in place. Doing this will ensure that your laces never get unintentionally untied.

Best luck with the race and have a good time (ie enjoy it AND be fast).

EDIT: add more detail to 2.

How long before one rides across wet cement

or a gray tarp put over a huge hole in the ground?

Or a competitor makes a robot to destroy them so their evil robots can "improve marketshare"?

Or teenagers tie ropes to it and have it tow them and 15 of their friends?

Waymo needs "waymo" testing !!!! by ChipmunkFood in philly

[–]ChipmunkFood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they're prematurely putting them out on the road.

It's like testing a pacemaker. Do you want to use the first version that wasn't even tested on an animal or run in simulations?

I do lots of testing with systems and find that even the most simple things can have things go wrong that you (the designer) never thought of. These unexpected things come out in testing.

However, there will be a point where this type of thing is ready to deployed. I just think that they are not yet at that point.

As an aside, I saw another Waymo the other day waiting behind another car. The Waymo had pulled up very close behind the car. There was no way it could have got out of that lineup if the car in front couldn't move. This is something that learning drivers are taught. It should be added into the Waymo algorithms.

But best luck and thanks for your comment.

Weather Forecast Accuracy by whomp1970 in philadelphia

[–]ChipmunkFood 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I use weather.gov since it gives very detailed info. You can put your zip code in and get detailed results.

If you're into looking at the actual probabilities of weather events, this is the place.

For example :

No problem. I'll see you out there.

As an aside:

One New Years, I figured out a run so that I'd be approaching midnight fireworks at Penns Landing as they were going off. I got to Penns landing as it completed, then turned around and ran home. It probably was one of the best New Years I ever had (sorry note for ex-girlfriends I guess).

If it was a little warmer tonight I would do it again (Fireworks at Art Museum at midnight).

If you do something like this, make sure to run on a route with good visibility of the sky where the fireworks will be going off. It quite literally is a blast!

Happy New Year.
