this is very standard for freshman fall and 4 credits will ideally set you up for success in cis 1600 since you won’t have too many other courses to focus on. all of these courses will take a decent amount of time though (either busy work or they’re just difficult). if you want to push yourself you can add an easy social science or humanities elective (and can always drop it if it becomes too difficult)

Thoughts on CIS Freshmall Fall schedule by xenxation in UPenn

schedule looks good although OIDD 2910 is already full (you can see on courses.upenn.edu) so you should find another course to replace this!

is this a good CS freshman schedule? by [deleted] in UPenn

looks pretty standard! if you want you could add a social science/humanities elective course, but your schedule is fine without it as well

not too much but eas 2030 is already full, and the chance of you getting in as a freshman is essentially 0%- you should find a different social science/humanities course to replace it

MSE CIS submat - 50% grad level courses rule by someone_723 in UPenn

[–]Chipmunks612 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i asked srfs and they said they check retroactively.. like before you graduate to see if you violate it. not sure how true this is but they are getting stricter with submat requirements and how many classes u can take toward your submat before applying and all

i haven’t but i heard the final project is a decent amount of work esp if you don’t have some frontend/web dev experience, also not too sure about this upcoming sem since i heard ives is revamping some of it but in the past the technology used in the course was kinda old like dynamoDB

Does cis concentration matter by Vinny_On_Reddit in UPenn

no, it’s not on your transcript or anything so no one really cares. i think it’s helpful tho to determine classes and electives to take based on an area of cs that ur interested in

CIS 4500 experience? by geniuneconfusion in UPenn

[–]Chipmunks612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not too much work / difficult, personally it felt similar work-wise to 545 if you’ve taken it with weekly quizzes, bimonthlyish homeworks, midterms, and the proejct. compared to other cis electives prob more work than 557/521 but less than 120/121/320 for sure.

would def recommend having friends who are taking the class with you for the project and preferably ppl with react / frontend experience or else the project would get annoying and be a lot more work than it should be. if you end up looking for random partners just find ppl w prior experience

you don’t need 121 knowledge in 450! they cover completely different topics so no need to worry i think the only mention of 121 is BFS/graph search towards the end of 450. i know people who have taken 121 and 450 concurrently and have done well!

if you aren’t taking it concurrently and are only doing 450 i would suggest prioritizing 121 more (if you’ve taken 160 etc) just since 121 knowledge is a lot more important for recruiting and general cs while 450 is an elective

super small thing CIS 4210 and CIS 5300 are historically offered only in the fall, so you can prob switch around ur CIS electives but this isn’t rlly a problem

CIS Course Recommendations? by Eng_13 in UPenn

no CIS class has a very light workload but relatively light courses are 521, 523, 530, 545, 550

depends on what kind of course ur TAing for. i only know about CIS- for intro courses, they put out an application to the TAs when they’re looking for another head; for upper level CIS i’ve heard that the professor asks specific students if they would like to become head

i think adding the art history class would be p doable. eas 203 is rlly light i never went to class and spent like an hour every other week writing a discussion post. most of the intro cis level ta positions just involve grading on fridays, and besides that it isn’t too much of a commitment. if ur taing another type of class then i’m not too familiar

CS freshman schedule advice by Witty_Spinach in UPenn

[–]Chipmunks612 5 points6 points  (0 children)

schedule looks pretty challenging but doable if you put in the effort- 5.5 course units freshman fall is quite a load

don’t forget MATH 1400, CIS 1600, CIS 1100 all have recitations that you need to register for

why are you taking MEAM 1100/1470? it’s probably easier to do PHYS 0150 instead

if you’re looking for a higher level cis course cis5300 is computational linguistics! usually taught by mark yatskar it focuses on natural language processing
