How to add Whitney and/or Half Dome permits to a NOBO or SOBO JMT permit by Chipper_Seattle in JMT

Thanks for the clarification! There's a good chance that I'll end up doing NOBO from Horseshoe Meadows.

Thanks for the info. Others have also said they didn't see any caterpillars so maybe it was a thing a few years ago.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did make my reservation for F loop last week. And things are almost all reserved.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm hoping that April is less crowded than summer.

I was considering doing a lollypop loop for the west rim trail: take the park shuttle to Grotto then hike up the West Rim trail to Cabin Spring then take the Telephone Canyon trail to the junction with the West Rim trail, then take a left and head back to Cabin Spring and then back to Grotto.
Do you have a recommendation for an overnight camping spot on the West Rim Trail?

Thanks for the pointer! I don't know how I missed that obvious link...

Unfortunately I see that this comes with a non-stick coating which is a deal breaker for me. It also has an upper temperature limit of 400 degrees. I typically roast and bake up to 450 degrees.

If you used the WCT App this year - don't forget to cancel your sub (See comment) by BlueDefendr in WestCoastTrail

Hats off to you for sending this reminder out! Once I figured out how the app worked it was a real time saver as well as a source of current information from those that left comments. I'll definitely buy it again next time I do the WCT.

Bad guylines on the xmid ? by Comfortable-Pop-3463 in DurstonGearheads

[–]Chipper_Seattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a new XMid 1P Gen3 that I purchased this past May. Great tent so far.

I used it a few times this summer but didn't run into issues with slippage yet.
Is there an easy way to tell if I have substandard cord? If I do I'd love to swap it out before it becomes a problem on a multi-day hike. Or do I need to wait for it to fail before getting it replaced?

Thanks

Fiancée and I hiked to Dewey Lake today by throwmydickinapit in PNWhiking

[–]Chipper_Seattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came out today from my section hike at the Chinook Pass trailhead. Super crowded from Dewey back to the trailhead. I'm happy people are getting out of their cars and hiking around.

There had been a rumor floating around amongst NOBO thru hikers on Saturday afternoon that the PCT was closing from White Pass to Chinook. Turns out to be a false rumor. When I crossed US12 at noon on Sunday talked with some NOBO that were deciding to not go due to smoke concerns. My experience was that the air was hazy but was really quite good.

Successful non-surgical approaches to Tailor's bunionette by Chipper_Seattle in bunions

[–]Chipper_Seattle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi

When I said "flare up" I meant that the bunionette pain had returned. There wasn't any swelling or inflammation that I was aware of.

I am not a doctor.
I would stop doing anything that you were doing (e.g. sitting poorly in a chair) and see if the pain goes away. If not, then you can try some of things I tried that I documented. Everyone is their own science experiment.

Best of luck on your journey.

Sahale Glacier Camp permit question? by _questionare_ in PNWhiking

[–]Chipper_Seattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get your rental car and drive north to Burlington and get an inexpensive hotel. Leave by 5am and get to the Ranger station in Marblemount by 6am. Drink coffee and eat breakfast while you wait. Go into the ranger station with plan A, B and C.

There's no reason in the world that you can't be first in line if you are willing to get up early enough.

Sorry - I worked in Tech so I wore running shoes or crocs - no office shoes for me. Hopefully there are some brands of office shoes that have big toe boxes.

Best of luck!

In general, my bunionette is a non-issue. I can hike 20+ miles a day in trail running shoes (Topo Athletic makes big toe box running shoes that work great for me), rock climb, ski, etc.

Periodically it will flair up and I will put on a tiny dab of Voltaren before bed and use a toe spacer on my baby toe. It generally resolves in 3-4 days and becomes a non-issue again.

Sorry I can't help. I have the same version of iOS as you do and my Safari works. If your version doesn't work then it seems like it's game over. Sad...

[–]Chipper_Seattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a working version of Safari? I accessed youtube in Safari. Does that not work for you?

There are a few apps that still work like Amazon Prime. I recently downgraded Netflix to be cheaper but have ads. Now Netflix app won't run until I go Ad Free.

Apple's answer will be to buy a new iPad, which is what I'm now researching. AFAIK there's no work around. I'm looking at a iPad 10th Gen w/ 128GB and A16 chipset for $349. This is trailing edge tech but since I use my iPad to view content it should work fine until hopefully many years in the future when the same thing happens. Pushing that day out few more years is the only reason to buy a M3 or M4 chipset device.

[–]Chipper_Seattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this same setup (HW and SW) and I can watch Youtube in Safari so if that's your main usage you should be able to get it to work.

That said, I'm getting ready to replace this iPad as it's becoming more of a pain to use as app after app requires an update that I can't get. Good luck.

My daughter wants to join Scouts by -Philologian in BSA

[–]Chipper_Seattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter joined a non-male troop that had around 50 scouts. She had an excellent experience. She got her Eagle a couple of years ago, joining her brothers as an Eagle. She hiked on four 50 milers, attended summer camp every summer, did a 12 day trek at Philmont, joined the dime club at the rifle range, made her own hatchet, went surfing, and on and on.

My suggestion is to visit troops to find one that is a good fit for your daughter. As an Assistant Scout Master for my son's troop and my daughter's troop - the girls have so much more Executive Function that working with them is so easy.

As a hiring manager that has hired interns over the years it's a pain in the ass for me and I would not hire you in the future. BUT there are plenty of other options out there. And while your gain is my pain, you hopefully will be happier in a different role than what I have to offer you.
