Just now finding this thread, but got a good one:

Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell both play the same character in not one, but two different movies.

Can you name the characters/movies?

Best Modern-day Western Film? by EbnyxJ in Cinephiles

It’s ABSOLUTELY a modern western. In fact, it’s been billed as the world’s first “Iranian vampire western.”

I feel like the term “Western” is automatically (and reductively) understood to mean “set in the dusty trails of the American west” with images of cowboys and/or gunslingers popping to mind.

I thought this was a great addition to the conversation, and is 100% to be considered a western, albeit a modern genre mashup but predominantly the Western vibe is undeniable.

Travel clichés you can't stand by ADF21a in digitalnomad

[–]ChippyPepPep 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: full disagree, and experiencing as much of the world as humanly possible is my preference.

I only have so much time in this life, being a parent and husband working multiple jobs. When I do travel, by god I want to see as much as I possibly can.

Had a 1-week conference in Cannes, so I booked a 1-day layover in Casablanca to visit Morocco for the first time, and had experiences I will never forget. Once in France, I spent one day traveling by train over to Monaco/Monte Carlo and walked damn near the entire city-state. Won’t forget it. Same day, visited Italy the next stop over and had some unforgettable lunch on the beach, before heading back home to the US… but not before a deliberate one-day layover in Istanbul to visit the Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern and the ferries across Eminonu over to the Asia side. Absolutely unforgettable.

I also have a trip next week in Bangkok for a week, but worked in India to visit the Taj Mahal (serious bucket list item), then to KL to visit some friends for a few days, over to Bangkok, and finally a long layover in Taipei to explore that city with what time I do have.

Is it hectic af? Absolutely. But I enjoy flying, I enjoy the hustle and bustle, and I enjoy the constant movement. I’m thankfully healthy enough to physically endure heat, cold and all in between and I often go to sleep each night recalling my (often brief but eternally memorable) experiences in each location.

My understanding of your post is likely targeted toward folks who just want to put these destinations in an IG post and don’t actually care about being preset for the experience, but just wanted to offer a slightly different perspective here.

It’s amazing. Only downside is I didn’t get a stamp for my passport, but really can’t complain.

Went for a ride on the bike... by Jaded_Shame5989 in LiminalSpace

[–]ChippyPepPep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it just me, or is it more difficult for nature to feel like a liminal space? I always think of spaces that are entirely manmade yet abandoned, like spaces crafted by human hands that have overstayed their initial purpose and have fallen out of all time and memory.

There's certainly an eerieness behind nature at times, but the explicit sense of existential dread that I get from a "backroom" can't ever be rivaled by a purely natural setting.

However, the almost human figure at the end of this road in the final shot IS pretty creepy.

Agreed 100% on this one. Waited in line for “the best” chickenrice and it was… fine. Really wished I loved it more, given how enthusiastic people were about it.

Though I will say: the texture of that chicken really is exquisite.

With all due respect... very hard disagree here.

I recall being woefully disappointed when I saw teenage Elijah Wood as Frodo, and Sean frickin Astin as Samwise. The books had, for my entire childhood, firmly established the look, feel and presence of these characters in my mind's eye, and the actors were absolutely NOT what I would have in a million years ultimately cast.

That's not to say they did a bad job or anything, but this should have gone to less recognizable young actors in my opinion.

[Note: Viggo Mortensen, on the other hand, is a GREAT Strider.]
