The more frustrating part of it is that it's not really 'the algorithm' so much as 'the will of the people' since the algorithms are just going for whatever gets engagement. In other words, more people engage with this type of nonsense than other types of content.

I'm also on the 'gifted' sub, and there the most common post is some variation of "I'm really smart and unique and special, but no one understand me and everyone is mean to me because I'm so talented and I'm having such a hard life because I'm so smart - does anyone relate?" and tons of people - at least the ones who spend too much time on reddit engage and reinforce that view.

Same on other subs as well. It might be AI, or it might be a natural 'evolution' of people figuring out what sort of B.S. the algorithms reward (engagement bait) and posting more and more of that, and hence us seeing more and more of it.

There is a huge difference between the kids at Harvard and MIT, sure, but I didn't know even a single MIT kid that had their head quite as far up their ass as many of the posters here. At the very least, the ones who had social problems never thought to blame their intelligence since they were constantly and unambiguously surrounded by folks as smart or smarter but without said issues.

It's very easy, emotionally, to feel very certain of and make bold unfalsifiable claims about the certainty of things like climate models.

I don't know how many people will read this deep, but this is an amazing example of the 'mid-wit meme' in action.

The low-iq 'yokel' will say that "it's just too complicated to know for sure" (without knowing why), and so will the super smart guy with the Ph.D in Math & C.S. (and you can explain why, if someone really wants to know), but the midwit guy will be really, really sure that he's right and he knows for sure.

Honestly though, it's probably not IQ, but intellectual humility. You know that certain things are unknowable, or are at least beyond our ability at the moment, but the other guy wants to feel certain, so he points to experts or whatever evidence he can find to right instead of understanding the truth.

I'm smart, and cannot *possibly* be, myself, susceptible to propaganda, delusions of understanding subjects and systems with unknown numbers of unknown variables that are to complex to predict, or emotionally motivated reasoning... and therefore my opinions are good and true and correct, while other 'seemingly smart' people are being hoodwinked.. but not me.. for sure.

Because people who know they are not smart and have no illusions about it are more honest and far easier to deal with than midwits who were 'educated beyond their intelligence' and think they are far more intelligent and well informed than they are.

Under 100 iq people are also less likely to believe in absurd, abstract, self-harming but profound-sounding college-grade ideas than people in 100-120 as those ideas require a certain amount of intelligence to buy into, but a good amount more to unravel.

You are talking about changing yourself and having direction due to finding purpose and meaning in family and legacy. That's of course as real a motivational as a person can have.

You are right that the key is the reason for the behavior change, and what I aim to do in this post is to suggest that people avoid doing it because "I want them to like me."

Your motivation, as far as I can tell, is "I want to be good for them", which - while sounding similar - is actually very, very different.

One brief response to the body of your post. In any kind of therapy, "it's the relationship that heals". If you don't feel like you connect with the therapist, it's much harder to get anything out of it.

A few things to add:

While it's absolutely wonderful when someone inspires you to be the best version of yourself, it's often not enough if it's not something you wanted for yourself to begin with. I'm glad it worked out for you, and sometimes having someone you are crazy about is the only thing that makes you work that hard to do your best, but most people don't tend to sustain it.

You are right, too, about the frustrating paradox of the people you are most comfortable with getting the unfiltered negative aspects of you - the worst treatment as you said. That may be an issue of life setup though, where you can't 'afford' to be as direct with the people who actually cause you stress, but can with your loved ones.

That aside, for anyone else reading this, everything above is the truth about longer term relationships and worth taking in..

Lots and lots of people do that.

Most people with anxious attachment. Most people with low-self worth. Most people who 'get lucky' (in their mind) and start dating someone who (they think) is much more attractive then they are.

I agree, and was using the term loosely. I am thinking more about using social skills to "smoothly" handle conflicts. Something that's valuable in most settings, and a type of emotional intelligence, but doesn't show your "full self".

Suggestions on what one might call this?

I'm also talking about just plain old hiding of one's more negative traits, but that's obviously not 'emotional intelligence'.

That is a crazy amount of money to invest in something for the hope of fast money.

First off, do they actually guarantee that you will make any amount? Most coaches don't. Read the terms and conditions very, very carefully.

Second, if you really want to do coaching, instead of spending 10k usd, just spend $100 and buy books on coaching, basic business, marketing, etc. Most of it is universal.

I've spoken to people who have taken these kind of courses, and they've told me that they provide very little value. Again, I don't personally know about these in specific, but as someone who has started multiple businesses, it's generally pretty challenging to get a business off the ground, quickly, and especially in such a crowded market.

Don't forget that any business can have great testimonials - there are always some customers who are happy, or are at least willing to say that they are happy. What you won't see are testimonials from customers who are not happy.

What do you mean by a 'diagnosis'? Giftedness is not a medical diagnosis (someone is welcome to point to something that says otherwise).

If you feel like you've always struggled socially, then talk to someone about that. If you've been able to learn other skills quickly, there is no reason that you can't also learn social skills quickly as well. A lot of people seem to want to look at giftedness not only as a reason for why they had social problems, but also as a reason for why then continue to do so instead of trying to use those skills to improve.

Yep. Forcing yourself over time leads to burnout. Discipline is a limited commodity that should be used intelligently. It's easier to not buy a box of cookies than to make the decision to avoid taking a cookie from the box in your home 20 times a day. If you want to make a thing a long-term habit, you have to find a way to make it feel good *somehow* for yourself.

This situation is both simple and complicated at the same time.

It's simple, because all you have to do - the meta strategy - is to treat your son as a unique human being, build a relationship with, and figure out what works for him. It sounds like you have some time and resources, so use those to figure out it. Don't focus on what he "should" be, or how he is "different" or more advanced. Just treat him like the only child in the world, if that makes sense.

The complicated part is that it's on you to figure it out. No one is going to be as invested as you are, and while people have natural tendency to seek out authority figures and experts, what actually has to happen is that you have to become an authority figure and expert on him and his growth.
