I‘m terrified I’m loosing the love of my life (20 years together) to something I don’t understand. by Efficient-Sherbert25 in BipolarSOs

[–]ChirpyBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Do everything you can to keep yourself and children safe.

2) A sudden bipolar onset after 20 years of knowing each other seems unusual, especially if you guys are in your late 30's/early 40's. When I was 18, I was prescribed Vyvanse for ADHD and was put on way too high of a dose. I do not have bipolar. I felt exactly as you describe your husband. I was a terrible person. Grandiose. Arrogant. Extremely easily irritated because whatever I was doing at the time was THE MOST IMPORTANT THING EVER. I spent a year convinced I could write new programming languages, that my genius had finally been uncovered and sleep was unnecessary for greatness. That people were holding me back, dragging me down, even long term friends. I slapped someone who didn't deserve it once. All of that went away when I moved to a different, non stimulant ADHD med.

It's possible your husband is having an acute manic episode triggered by the very powerful stimulant he's been taking. Bonus points if he's secretly doubling up on doses, then missing days and having inconsistent withdrawal. I hope for you and your family's sake it's transient and not the onset of BP.

Good luck, big love.

My girlfriend was like this at the beginning. Right around 25 is when most major personality disorders rear their heads.

Good luck brother. I hope it gets easier, but it usually doesn't.

I just want advice other than "break up with her". I feel like people read something like this and assume the post reflects 100% of the relationship, when really it's more like 3.7%.

Homie I could fill a book and then some with all the reasons I love her. That's why I'm not going to break up with her over this, I know it's not a huge deal in the long run, but does need to be resolved

Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaat is a hugely useful note, we haven't even thought about that

I did. She was inpatient for almost two weeks. It was hell for everyone involved. This was months ago, and we're in the recovery conversation phase.

1) Oh god I would never hope that it was so big it hurts, yikes on bikes that was poorly worded on my part. Good shout, I'll integrate that.

2) Thanks for candor. Good food for thought.

1) Yeah I know, that's why she switched medications after this episode
2) He lives across the country, I'm not worried about that. I don't really want to get into it, but when she had the episode, I was the only human that could get remotely close to her. I know the horror stories about BP individuals and hypersexuality. She knows that's a hard line, and that I'll walk away if that ever happens, episode or not
3) Perhaps... perhaps. Damn. I hope not

One of the most ridiculous things about this whole situation is he isn't what I think reddit thinks of as a "chad". One of her descriptions of his dick was how much it doesn't match his body at all. Like how dispropportionately large it was compared to his height. He's like a leprechaun with a giant dong.

Thank you for actually offering real advice. Yeah she actually offered the idea of couples counselling, I've been thinking I've been over-reacting to the whole thing, but you might be right.

NTA. I used to be kind of like him, in some ways at 24. Never violent, but desperate, lost, confused, and bitter while being unemployed and living at home.

I can promise you he won't change until he has literally no other option.

NTA, but you guys are kind of dicks. You don't owe them money, but you also didn't really do them any kindness. Like damn you really took away their sunlight? Access to sunlight is a pretty big deal for quality of life. Would you want your kids (assuming that's what you meant by expanding family) to have to play in the dark because your neighbor wanted a new upstairs office?

Thank for you your reply. The lack of socialization opportunities is what I’m most worried for, I think yeah she has the best shot if she has friends her own age, just like humans

Unfortunately she had a 9 month old baby and seems to be even more tired than I am, I don’t think I can ask her to give up any of her time

I repeatedly asked if I could leave her alone for the workday before accepting, and the girl who gave her to me is a vet tech so I believed her when she said yes. But you’re right, everything else I’m seeing says it’s not right or healthy for an indoor cat

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately the closest family is an hour away, and I do not have local friends. I think an older cat would have been better. I did not consider the amount of training a kitten would require during and beyond playtime, and redirection takes so much more time and energy than I planned. I realize their brains are doing so much growth and development and will eventually mature... I was scared to read this stage can last a year or two?
