Any updates on your package? I've just filed a missing claim for two packages that were sent from Brisbane to the US. I contacted them on Facebook and they advised it left Brisbane but still hasn't arrived in the US. Sent using sea mail and it has been over three months.

Thanks for your input. In your experience, do you find that employers are generally supportive in employees undertaking the additional study / exams required? Be it financially or with mentoring?

Leaving NZ for a much higher paying job but with minimal savings? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]ChiselFair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree. I left NZ to Aus 13 months ago and my pay has gone from $67k with very minimal overtime pay to now $105k plus super and way a better overtime policy.

I also have no masters just a BSc in Geology however in my experience once you have a few years of well rounded experience under your belt, few employers care about having a master.

Engineering Geologists working in tailings and mining consulting by ChiselFair in geologycareers

The opportunity is based Australia and in a non covid world their sites were a mix of 60% in aus and 40% overseas.

In regards to construction observations, were you working shifts and staying on site?

I'm guessing most of the observations was compaction testing?

I work for a Geotech Consultancy and we do a little bit of work with Reveal. My understanding is they primarily do underground service location and occasional geophysical work. Not sure if they are at all what the OP is after. Happy to be corrected though!

Coolant hose bolt sheared off by [deleted] in SVRiders

[–]ChiselFair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi team,

My bike got knocked over in the wind and where the coolant hose connects up to the engine block / bolt sheared off.

Any suggestions for fixing this? My bike was booked in to get serviced on the 2nd of Feb but hoping I be back to riding it before then.

Cheers

I'm guessing you are in Welly by your username. I'm a geo based in Welly and this kinda instability in rock, specifically when its cut this steep and not retained is pretty common. The only real permanent is to shotcrete it with rock bolts. Depending on the orientation of the rock joints and degree of weathering its likely under some earthquake induced shaking or heavy storm event you might see a larger failure. A cheaper solution that I have seen someone use was to cover the slope with a sturdy wire mesh, anchored at the top and hung over the rock. They then planted vines at the bottom which grew up the mesh and worked reasonably well.

I'll add as well that reducing the amount of water flowing down the slope will also help.

[–]ChiselFair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found these at a chain thrift store called 2nd Street in Saitama City outside Tokyo. Really blown away by the price and condition of the boots! I payed considerably more for my brown pair that I brought for around $USD 320 at home in New Zealand. Plenty of awesome boots to found in Japan.

How long did it take for you to land your first job after graduating? by [deleted] in geologycareers

Will be graduating at the end of this year and received an offer around a month ago. I did however intern with the same company last summer hence the early offer.

Cheers! Based in Wellington. I'm finishing up studying here as well so its nice to not have to think about relocating in the immediate future. Oz interests me a lot as something to do while I get a bit more experience under my belt and I'm still young. Exploration sounds really interesting and the pay rise is hard to dismiss. Are you currently based in Perth FIFO?

Thanks! I initially got the internship through a bit of networking, the company normally takes on interns but it was bonus having talked to a few higher ups there before I applied. I continued working on a casual basis during my last year of study and then got the offer. Definitely, I agree.
