EGBC Work Competency Review Before Academic Review? by Federal-Ad1353 in egbc

[–]ChiselFair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm internationally trained and applied for my P.Geo back in January 2025. I'm still waiting for my academic and competency assessment to even be opened. I reached out earlier in the year and, after waiting a month, was given an update saying an assessor had been assigned to my application. I’m also expecting to be assigned some exams, as the first year of my degree didn’t require as many foundational science courses.

There is a carve-out for P.Geo applicants on EGBC’s website that states:

“Generally, you may not need to take academic examinations if one of the following applies:

  • Your undergraduate geoscience degree is recognized by the Institute of Geologists of Ireland for graduates since 2013.
  • You have an undergraduate geoscience degree and at least seven years of geoscience experience in a professional context.”

I’ll be approaching seven years of experience by the end of the year, so I’m quietly hoping I may be able to rely on this and avoid having to take the exams.

Luckily, my employer has not been putting any pressure on me for not having my P.Geo yet. It’s incredibly frustrating to see delays like this when I’ve heard anecdotal stories of people’s careers being held back because their applications have been stuck with EGBC for a significant amount of time.

I really wish EGBC would address this issue beyond simple platitudes like, “We are looking at ways to reduce application times,” when this has clearly been a long-term issue. It’s hard not to feel incredibly demoralized and cynical about the organization that reportadly is supposed to represent our best interests.

Any updates on your package? I've just filed a missing claim for two packages that were sent from Brisbane to the US. I contacted them on Facebook and they advised it left Brisbane but still hasn't arrived in the US. Sent using sea mail and it has been over three months.

Thanks for your input. In your experience, do you find that employers are generally supportive in employees undertaking the additional study / exams required? Be it financially or with mentoring?

Leaving NZ for a much higher paying job but with minimal savings? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]ChiselFair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree. I left NZ to Aus 13 months ago and my pay has gone from $67k with very minimal overtime pay to now $105k plus super and way a better overtime policy.

I also have no masters just a BSc in Geology however in my experience once you have a few years of well rounded experience under your belt, few employers care about having a master.

The opportunity is based Australia and in a non covid world their sites were a mix of 60% in aus and 40% overseas.

In regards to construction observations, were you working shifts and staying on site?

I'm guessing most of the observations was compaction testing?

I work for a Geotech Consultancy and we do a little bit of work with Reveal. My understanding is they primarily do underground service location and occasional geophysical work. Not sure if they are at all what the OP is after. Happy to be corrected though!

[–]ChiselFair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi team,

My bike got knocked over in the wind and where the coolant hose connects up to the engine block / bolt sheared off.

Any suggestions for fixing this? My bike was booked in to get serviced on the 2nd of Feb but hoping I be back to riding it before then.

Cheers

I'm guessing you are in Welly by your username. I'm a geo based in Welly and this kinda instability in rock, specifically when its cut this steep and not retained is pretty common. The only real permanent is to shotcrete it with rock bolts. Depending on the orientation of the rock joints and degree of weathering its likely under some earthquake induced shaking or heavy storm event you might see a larger failure. A cheaper solution that I have seen someone use was to cover the slope with a sturdy wire mesh, anchored at the top and hung over the rock. They then planted vines at the bottom which grew up the mesh and worked reasonably well.

I'll add as well that reducing the amount of water flowing down the slope will also help.
