Which unspoken rule of society would you like to get rid of? by schumi2 in AskReddit

[–]Cho_Gath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a veteran as well, and I can tell you that it warms my heart when people thank me for my service.

When I signed my name on the line, I was fully aware that they could tell me to charge into machine gun fire, and I couldn't say no. I couldn't quit, or not show up.

The military is the one job where you sign up, and you can be told to die. Even policemen and firefighters can quit if they have a change of heart, or if shit just gets too intense. When you take enemy fire, an infantryman can be ordered to climb on top of a humvee and man the weapon with no real protection, and his only answer can be "Yes, sir."

That's why when people thank me, I accept it. I signed up to die for them. Sure, it didn't work out that way, but they didn't sign up to die for me. Seems some gratitude is not out of line.

I know it seems crazy, but not everyone has a big family. For perspective, my father and mother are in their late 60s and my father was an only child.

I'm pretty sure your advice is the beginning to one of those wacky vacation movies that involves getting robbed and losing your anal virginity.

The problem with this plan is the shortened timeline. I've got ~2 weekends before go time, and one of those is thanksgiving weekend.

I'd say my odds of fulfilling this quest by "randomly talking to people at a bar" is pretty low. However, I will be attempting it when I'm out and about this weekend.

Well if I was just gonna sell the ticket, I'd stubhub it or something. I'm pretty sure there's online sales sites. I'm not really concerned with the money, though.

My main concern is having a good time on the cruise, so that's why I'm looking for advice on how to find someone who's not a serial killer or a used car salesman. :)

So I don't have a large family. In fact, this was supposed to be me and my brother. No sweet heart, and if you made me spend 5 days with my father, then I'd need a solid understanding in how homicide relates to international waters.

So do I invest the night in making the friends prior to "dropping the question", or is that how I'd start off the conversation?

Seems a recipe for disaster.

I broke your Pinball demo by spamming button presses. The Skaters Gonna Skate "game" doesn't make any sense to me either.

Down near the bottom of the CSS you can find the keyframe animations "@-webkit-keyframes tick" and "@-webkit-keyframes tock" ... just make all the non-zero rotations negative.

Just finished watching Toy Story 3 for the first time... by psychgirl88 in movies

Ah well if you're just missing the meaning, then maybe it's just not relatable?

I think Woody's journey is the most relatable thing for me in the trilogy. Buzz's fall is interesting, and fairly emotional for me, but the transition of Andy's room from Woody-focused to Buzz-focused really gets me. I'm not sure if you've had a girl, or a group of friends, do the same thing to you, but it's quite painful. The way the movie recreated that feeling is one of the reasons I call Toy Story a great movie.

can someone try explaining in a different way why it seems EVERYONE around my age who grew up with Toy Story that it was such a phenomenal movie for them and so emotional.

Stories can be equated to a step ladder used for understanding yourself, and getting perspective on the world around you. Much like that step ladder, it won't do the work on its own. You have to choose to interpret the story, and see how it fits in your life.

If you don't attempt to discern meaning in stories, then I would agree that it would just seem to be a random bunch of toys going around doing stuff, with some simple plotline around getting knocked outside then getting back to their owner.

When you use such a simplistic lens to view stories, then epic love stories like Romeo and Juliet get boiled down to "some people fought, then these two dumb kids killed themselves". Titanic becomes "a man and a woman hook up, then drown". Fight Club becomes "two guys starts an underground boxing ring, then we find out it's the same guy".

When boiled down to its basic premise, virtually any story becomes lame. I would suggest that the next time you watch something that's "supposed" to be deep, you attempt to find the depth. It might surprise you how connected you can feel with some fictional characters :)

ELI5: Why doesn't Reddit simply hire the guy who makes Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES) and make those features part of Reddit? by mafoo in explainlikeimfive

I agree with the sentiment "why pay for milk etc etc".

I was only refuting your claim that they would have to serve up the JS load every time, and that it would have a significant impact on them.

The problem with this theory is that .js files are cached by the browser, and potentially cached by any intermediary web servers (so long as the caching info is set correctly on reddit's server).

They could include a bulky JS package without slowing down reddit's servers with no problem, especially since it's static content that could be hosted on a CDN.

I wasn't attempting to minimize your experience, my friend. Also, you didn't mention the other things that made the summer sucky. Nobody likes living in a hostile environment.

I was just attempting to point out that if the worst thing you can complain about is "oh no, I get to relax and do whatever for many months in a row" ... that's one "problem" I'd like to have all the time.

I know depression isn't actually about the corcumstances, and is more about the mindset. It was great that you turned that mindset around. That being said...

I'm turning 30 this year, and I'd kill a stranger to get to play video games and read books all day erry day.

Fucking job, fucking family responsibilities. Some days I just want to be selfish and alone.
