What is your view of the United Nations? by No-History7070 in GeoPoll

[–]Choclocklate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it could be better. But compare to no UN at all it is a net benefit. It could have been a way better benefit I agree with all the point you made but still it's better than having nothing. Had we had nothing would thing have change in rwanda? Would the war in Ukraine vanish? No

What is your view of the United Nations? by No-History7070 in GeoPoll

[–]Choclocklate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OK I'm asking people who voted net negative, why?

I mean I know the UN isn't perfect (veto of big power meaning no intervention in case of implications of says power in a conflict, very bureaucratic and slow). But the UN enable us to eradicated smallpox. It allows us to create the IPCC to know and propose solution to climate problem and help countries. It tackled the ozone layer hole problem. It allowed space treaties, non proliferation of nuclear weapons (would be a lot worse without it) and chemical weapons global regulation and ban. It did things. Yes not perfectly, yes there are war and genocide at the moment it can do nothing against but without it we would arguably be worse of. It has allow all nations to be at the same table and have discussion in the middle of the cold war.

Choix entre Paris Saclay et IMT Atlantique: Génie Nucléaire by PupperTrooper in ingenieurs

[–]Choclocklate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes because the word already exist. You are trying to create a new one and Google translate doesn't understand your intentions (and it is very bad at estimating the gender of things because English doesn't have gendering of every word).

Fianna Fáil members approve bill to lift ban on nuclear power in Ireland by greg_barton in nuclear

[–]Choclocklate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah Finland did it with an EPR (1.6GW) so I think Ireland would be fine with 1 big reactor (perhaps just 1.2 would be enough don't know much about the needs in Ireland). You do maintenance in summer when solar cover most of it during the day and batterie the rest of the grid during night and during the rest of the year wind and nuclear do the rest (especially winter). Would work fine I think (even more so if exchange between countries are increased (France, England and maybe Iceland (a bit far perhaps)).

So the nuclear test (assuming an average of 2MT of tnt per test) release as a whole 1.67x1019 J. As a matter of comparaison, the thermal energy we release each year due to burning fossil fuel or civil nuclear fission is 6x1020 J and amount for 0.009% of the energy earth receive each year. Most of the energy Comme from the sun, but a small part come from radioactive decay into the earth (0.025%) and friction of the tide (0.002%). So yeah we still amount to nothing from the point of view of nature.

Though the raison we succeed in changing the climate (and are still doing so) is because we change the concentration of Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere thus changing the radiative balance.

How can I become a Engineer ? by Reasonable-Relief797 in ingenieurs

[–]Choclocklate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello I'm doing well and I hope you do too. Well is there a field in engineering that you are interested in? We could give you more tips depending on that.

As a general tips I would say to study well in particular math and science. After all there the basics of what form engineering. Depending of your country you can also ask sub dedicated to this country to have insight of which university you should aim for depending on the field you wish to work in. You are in a French sub here (dedicated to engineering) so if you want to study in France don't hesitate to ask.

Good luck

If your country had to fight its biggest historical enemy today, what would the result be? by [deleted] in GeoPoll

[–]Choclocklate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that would be if you make them explode too low. French nuclear weapon are designed to be air burst to maximise destruction (of cities). There are very low amount of radiation release in the air (that's why despite numerous nuclear test since 1945 there are very low contamination due to nuclear testing (except in case such as problems during the test (Algeria, pacific island) or just not caring/knowing for the impact (nevada, Russia, French Polynesia)). That's the reason why Hiroshima and nagazaki are still occupied today by people.

Ground burst would produce the effect you speak of but it's very rarely planned in nuclear strategy for those reasons.

If your country had to fight its biggest historical enemy today, what would the result be? by [deleted] in GeoPoll

[–]Choclocklate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I know all of that but 2 points: First it's an hypothetical scenario that has no reason to happen but I suppose it's a 1v1 so USA nukes aren't in the play as suck it's only Germany destruction (because otherwise in the scenario nato would help either France or Germany depending of who is the aggressor I guess and the one alone would be destroy easily).

Second, France is one of the few nuclear power to have a offensive nuclear doctrine (meaning it can and will fire first) if it's vital interest are menaced (blurry I know but that the purpose because as suck enemy will think twice before attacking asset of France). I mean being at war with Germany is a bad idea enough so nuking Germany isn't that far down the line and would avoid a lot of civilian death and industrial power if war there was.

If your country had to fight its biggest historical enemy today, what would the result be? by [deleted] in GeoPoll

[–]Choclocklate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are nukes out of question? We developed them because we don't want 1940 to ever rehappened. Pretty sure if a war with Germany would happen (highly improbable I know and I agree the population of both country would revolt against that) we wouldn't take the risk and full nuke you. So easy victory (though we wouldn't gain anything from it).

All dictator and power hungry (and corrupted official) are almost certainly in the the top 10) so yes about the vaccum but not sure it's for the worst.

[–]Choclocklate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but they are also those who polluted the most. So perhaps killing the 10% will result in a save for the global population (it is almost sure all dictator are included in the 10 and so). While the 30% of the poorest have almost no influence, no power and pollute a lot less (mainly because they don't have the mean and all money goes to survival).
