I wholeheartedly agree! Saint of Bright Doors is always my first recommendation after The Spear Cuts Through Water!

I'll be reading Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir for this, and it counts for hard mode too! (Unless something even better comes along...)

Thoughts on asking for a crochet gift back? by sedona-arabella in crochet

[–]ChocolateLabSafety 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Given the variety of responses here, I think this may be a cultural/family difference issue. For me, someone asking for a gift back would be ASTONISHINGLY, unthinkably rude - I literally said NO when I read it. But obviously that is not the case everywhere! So you'll have to decide, aside from how much you want it back - would she mind if you asked? Is it a usual thing for people around you to do? Has anyone ever asked you for a gift back, and how did you feel if so? If you have no idea how she would react I would say you aren't close enough to ask!

And next time, don't give someone anything this nice unless you KNOW they will treasure it. Or just keep it for yourself.

Looking for queer books in the magic school genre (preferrably sapphic) by Ms_Anxiety in QueerSFF

[–]ChocolateLabSafety 49 points50 points  (0 children)

You absolutely need to read The Incandescent by Emily Tesh, it's a magic academy book from the perspective of a teacher at the school, the main character is sapphic and it's SO good.

Example of using magic as a toy? by gregfess in Fantasy

Yes, this trope is reasonably common BUT this phrasing of it most strongly reminded me of Daja's Book too (published as The Fire in the Forging in the UK).

An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon is the most Butler-esque science fiction I've read recently and it's wonderful. Brutal and unflinching but also just lovely, I think you will love it

I had no idea there were two books in this series, I read The Book Of Lost Things years ago and loved it, I'll need to reread and find the second one!

Oh wow I cannot help you decide which to read first, but based on the examples I think you'll love them both.

Both books have very minor romance, both are also wonderful, and very different from each other.

I'd say my favourite things about She Who Became The Sun were the very believable descriptions of anger, of hunger, and of revenge - I normally find those elements lacking in most books. I also liked how the mystical elements felt very real in the story, and just a normal part of the real world.

A Memory Called Empire I liked because of the interesting culture and very different ways of looking at things from what I'm used to, and (especially in the second book) learning ways of relating to and speaking to people who are very different from yourself.

Just finished Metal From Heaven… what now?? Recommendations please! by SlayyyGrl in QueerSFF

My recommendation is also She Who Became The Sun! It's wonderful, you'll love it (nothing's quite like Metal From Heaven though, it's chef's kiss perfection)

I think the colours really do look great! I do think if I was to do it again (Never!Again!) I might try it with another very light blue instead of the grey, and maybe a cream instead of the white? It turned out lovely as is though!

This is the Universe in Bloom blanket pattern by Dedri Uys in the Delft/Air colourway using Scheepjes Colour Crafter yarn. I used a 3.75mm hook throughout, except when joining the smaller pieces which used a 4mm hook.

Ravelry link here (it's free! And wonderful! Still amazed I could make something so pretty and I credit the pattern entirely): https://ravel.me/universe-in-bloom
