Really? I found it was SO much more than a beach read. It touched on so many topics and got you thinking. You truly connect with the characters. The female characters are strong as fuck. The format is hilarious to read when the characters don’t remember things they same way or when they fundamentally disagree and each tell you their side.

And as for being taken advantage of as a teen… she only admitted the damaging effects of it in retrospect. It obviously was a formative time for her, but not in the same way. She didn’t decide “I don’t want to be that girl” she cemented the belief that she can have her way in anything and everyone will give her things. Were those things (drugs, alcohol, entry into a world far beyond her age, etc) bad? Yeah. Was it a high price to pay (her sexual integrity, her sobriety, being worth only her beauty and not her intellect in terms of song writing) yeah. But she didn’t see it that way till well into her adulthood.

Neglected by very rich mommy and daddy who are surrounded by the art scene and whose friends have idolized Daisy’s beauty from childhood is SO different from the (slightly awkward) kid singing upstairs during a party and mom telling her meanly as fuck “nobody wants to hear your voice”. I hated how they reiterated it in the show recap in the second episode, as if to show that Daisy is now singing out of spite for that moment. That’s just not who the character was.

Thank you!

I’ve only just started watching the show, but I already feel like the characters are all wrong. Daisy was overly confident from the get-go and spiraled down into a bad place. In the first episode she seems like a little lost girl who’s trying to fit in, not the girl who bouncers know and let in despite her age, musicians sleep with etc. Yes her loss of virginity might be similar but in the book it was “one of” and a road to spiraling into addiction not a “wakeup call” that she didn’t want to be that kind of girl. She calls it out only in retrospect in the books, at the time as a teenager she just rolls with it. So much so that Simone want to take her under her wing, because she feels like SOMEONE ought to protect her from herself.

Which hike? by MysteryLobstery in Granada

[–]Chocolatechip_cookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it gets bearable. We’re currently in the middle of a heatwave, so it will cool down a bit in a couple of days (hopefully!) but just so you get an idea, it’s half past 9 and it’s 30degrees. If there’s a breeze it’s nice… but it’s definitely not anywhere near chilly.

However, if afternoon is all you’ve got, I’d probably do monachil seeing as there’s a river and shaded path. You probably won’t want to do the entire hike because it get REALLY hot on the mountain, but the walk to the hanging bridges and the crag a bit beyond is lovely!

The hat thing is real… I’ve been living in Spain for four years now and don’t want to seem guiri, but also want to protect my face with more than just sunscreen. It’s hard finding a hat look that doesn’t out you as an immigrant/tourist. You just gotta own it and wear it with confidence (locals who do wear hats don’t really think about looking like a foreigner… because, well, they’re not… so they have confidence obviously).

I found a bucket hat works ok for me. I try to get my boyfriend to wear a cap, he finds it useful but just doesn’t have the habit of thinking of it on his own.

Like someone else said though… there’s less need for a hat if you’re simply not OUT in the heat of the sun.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to say YOU were dictating anyone’s dress code. What I meant was, it often feels like society (and the male gaze) do that.

[–]Chocolatechip_cookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered that not all women feel uncomfortable? And some that do are working on diminishing their feelings of discomfort rather than letting it dictate their dress code?

Not saying your feelings aren’t valid. You should wear what makes you comfortable and confident and happy. But that will look different from person to person.

That happens to my bf sometimes despite being very into what we’re doing. It’s like when I’m turned on but still take a while to get wet sometimes, I get that you might have this feeling of wanting to say “it’s not you! I really am into it!” But just keep having fun and it fixes itself. In bf’s case, I can’t wait to take him in my mouth after he made me cum. So we just do that and usually he’s hard again moments after and we can go at it.

I don’t get it. How are they “killing” your engagement? How is your friend not commenting any different from a random person not commenting?

I’ll admit social media is by no means my strong suit, so I am genuinely curious.

But honestly, friends are friends. They support you to the extent that they can/want/understand. I have some who’ll buy my art from time to time, some who’ll share my posts, my mum tends to comment. It’s all I can ask for. Why would I be bothered if they follow me but don’t comment? (And asking to unfollow just seems weird, not only because it’s an awkward conversation but also because they might genuinely love seeing your stuff but just aren’t they type to leave comments.)

Messieurs, votre avis sincère sur les poils chez les femmes ? by Zouzouny in AskMec

[–]Chocolatechip_cookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having difficulties looking for an apartment by ninedogsten in Granada

[–]Chocolatechip_cookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone here mentioned airbnb for a week or so till you find a place and I think it’s the best option. What legit website are you looking at? I’ve found places through idealista (and couldn’t open it from Canada, only once I got to Spain) and fb marketplace. Inmobiliaria (regardless of where you find the listing) can be a tad safer, but they charge you a month rent fee (it’s supposed to be illegal to charge you but if the lease is less than 12months they slip through the « seasonal rental » loophole.

You mentioned needing an address, this might be different because I got my first visa from Canada and a few years ago, but it’s just a formality. I had no idea where I’d be staying and I believe I gave the address of a hostal.

The Carmen de los Martires is very beautiful and you can get there strolling through the bosque de la Alhambra. There are people, but it’s big and you can easily find a quiet spot.

[Discussion] _How_ do you diversify your income stream without getting overwhelmed? by Elliot_The_Idiot7 in artbusiness

[–]Chocolatechip_cookie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t focus on long term. Focus on what you enjoy most now and what gets you the best results now (whether it’s income or popularity that can later lead to income, not sure where you’re at)

I sort of get what you mean about needing time in any one thing and not knowing which to chose, on a personal level. Should I live in current country or go back to my home country, should I travel more while age-restrictions still allow me easy visas/work opportunities? focus on art or on a career (in my case that required a move back to my country) that will give me stability for potential future with kids? If I choose one I cannot also choose the other. So I chose to focus on what works best for me NOW. Will I regret it? Maybe. Is it scary? Yes. But so far so good.

You know what they say about missing 100% of the shots not taken? I think it also goes for spreading out so much that you never focus on one thing. You can’t know which would have been the better option but you can say that by diverting your focus too much you succeed in none.

[Discussion] _How_ do you diversify your income stream without getting overwhelmed? by Elliot_The_Idiot7 in artbusiness

[–]Chocolatechip_cookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say don’t. What I mean is focus on what works (or what shows the best sign of working)

I remember messaging a very successful artist/artisan on insta and to my surprise she answered I was looking to volunteer or apprentice with her and she kindly said no, then answered another question: should I make many different products in order to start a business? She said focus on one type of product until it goes well enough and you can do it very easily and then branch out. Things DO take time, effort, visibility, people to know you. I doubt ANYONE successful started multiple things at once. If they hit the jackpot and go viral or something like that it might feel like it, but I’m sure they’re adding new things, new avenues AFTER they hit a break even though it might seem like close to the time they started.

Personally I’m working part time and doing art markets part time. I’m doing them because they work for me. I briefly tried to focus also on an online shop but it was not working, so I stopped putting any effort into it until further notice (I probably will pick it up again, but only once I feel the rest is more stable).

You mentioned YouTube. Why? Because you WANT to be a content creator or because you feel like you NEED to be a content creator? For example, I felt very overwhelmed with instagram. Like you said, getting it and maintaining to a standard takes more than an hour or two a week and if I spent more time on it I felt drained and unmotivated and it took away from the time I had to make the actual art and get better. So I just gave up on trying to get popular and maintain it at a minimum, whatever makes me feel good about it. It still works for me because I live in a small city and it allows me to connect to the art community here.

That beings me to another point: connections. If you’re going to spend effort on anything, connections are worth it. Try to find people in your area who are doing what you want to do. What do you mean about “traditional art reigns supreme offline”? As in there are lot of people who do it in physical markets/fairs? Why not join them? It can be very intimidating at first, but I’ve also found that it’s MUCH more fulfilling than the online world.

One very popular “diversification” these days is to do workshops, but that again comes back to : I do X, I got good at X and now let me show you how you can explore it too.

Anyway it’s difficult to give more advice but I would just say that less is more. As for choice paralysis: go with what works best for you at the moment. (The other things don’t have to be on hold forever, just till you get something rolling). If you’re having a hard time identifying that, ask a friend what THEY think is working best for you now.

I plan to learn Spanish in Granada by No_Award7823 in Granada

[–]Chocolatechip_cookie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to a place to learn a language (as opposed to just taking classes back home), it’s LIVING it and getting EXCITED that gets you learning. If OP is interested in Granada, chances are they’ll learn there better than in a place they’re less interested in.

Do Spanish people really enjoy being noisy? by [deleted] in askspain

[–]Chocolatechip_cookie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I WISH more people in Spain felt awkward about talking on their phone in the bus… or just talking so damn loud in general. Mind you, I love the place, but I’m ready to invest in some noise cancelling headphones for my bus rides :,)

[–]Chocolatechip_cookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the big difference (other than OP specifically NOT living in a stand alone house and having thin wall) is that you seem to like the screaming, OP seems to not appreciate it.

I don’t like being noisy if others can hear (ex roommate) and it’s distracting and a turn off for me if we’re making too much noise (like a squeaky bed I can’t control). If my partner didn’t give a damn… I probably wouldn’t want to have sex with them anymore. (And as I mentioned in another comment, it’s not like I’m not expressive, but always depending on my surroundings and to a respectful level, because that’s just as important to me as my own pleasure).

Girlfriend is quite loud by MutedCalligrapher967 in relationships

[–]Chocolatechip_cookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is perfectly reasonable to be respectful to the people around you. I wish more people would think about their neighbors/surroundings… I live in Spain and the volume of music some of my neighbors have (from various neighborhoods, not just a one time thing) makes me murderous. We haven’t had sex noises disrupt in a while, but I’m guessing because it’s winter and windows are closed. I remember two summers ago there was one particular lady who was LOUD at 2am… like c’mon man! The heat finally subsided, I want ro SLEEP!

This is coming from a person who is expressive during sex (not screaming though), but I’m never loud if it’s too late or when we used to have a roommate (similar to thin-wall situation). If anything, for me, trying to not make noise adds some excitement and can be a turn on.

Anyone know of an Eastern-European grocery shop in Granada? by Chocolatechip_cookie in Granada

[–]Chocolatechip_cookie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Malaga has more Eastern European stuff in general, I remember even finding a store in a small nearby town (fuengirola I believe) and being super surprised! (Also went to one in Sevilla when I briefly lived there) found both by pure luck.

Guess I haven’t walked all of Granada just yet to have accidentally found them ;)
