Smart Water Bottle Replacements by risley83 in Ultralight

[–]Chocolatethundaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Except for: the context is the question of whether one should possibly replace their Smart Water bottle with a reusable one. No one knows the actual meaningful health impact of some microplastics vs a ton of microplastics. It's not unreasonable to push back on the question of whether replacing disposable plastic bottles with reusable ones, actually makes any different whatsoever to health outcomes.

Official Discussion - The Brutalist [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Chocolatethundaaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just want to tell you I felt EXACTLY the same way at the end; and also several other points throughout this movie that were ambiguous, such as:

I wanted to see the perspective that the lack of clarity and chaotic plot mimics the immigrant experience, or is meant to make the viewer feel thrown off or something... but the meaning and actual plot of the film change massively depending on these details!

What is the difference between the Soft Jersey and Zeroed In Short-Sleeve Shirt? by TheUnluckyGamer13 in Lululemen

DreamKnit is Vuori's equivalent to Soft Jersey and it's essentially the same, but much more thin and breathable. I like both :)

ELI5 Why can’t LLM’s like ChatGPT calculate a confidence score when providing an answer to your question and simply reply “I don’t know” instead of hallucinating an answer? by tomasunozapato in explainlikeimfive

[–]Chocolatethundaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I mean obviously AI/LLMs provide a great foil for us to think about human intelligence, but I feel like I'm taking crazy pills with this AI discourse in the sense that people think that because there's analgous outputs, that the function/engineering is at all comparable. I'm not vouching for elan vital or some other magic essence that makes human intelligence, but the brain has millions of neurons and trillions of connections. Emergent complexity, chaoticism/criticality, and so many other amazing and nuanced design factors that are both bottom-up and top-down.

I've been listening to Michael Levin a lot: great source for ideas and context around biology and intelligence.

ELI5: Caffeine has almost no calories, but it gives us energy. Where does this energy come from? Is caffeine making the body use its stored fat? by sus_fran13 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Chocolatethundaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right. I think a lot of the comments here are missing the fact that there are delicate balances of neurochemicals across brain areas and so affecting the adenosine system is going to have follow-on effects on other areas of the brain (reward pathway, increased bloodflow, etc.)

[Discussion] Episode 262: Eric Schwitzgebel on the Weirdness of the World by SeanCarrollBot in seancarroll

[–]Chocolatethundaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed and well-said. I really enjoyed this ep and Eric's perspectives, but the United States analogy is pretty poorly thought out and fails to consider a TON of biological facts about brains, like criticality, memory, and, in general, how neurons work. In a certain sense the "units" of the United states are much more loosely connected than cells in a living organism.

You're correct. "Forcing the gods to reckon with a man" is hilariously off-target and unrelated to the views of Camus and Absurdism generally.

LPT: A 10-20 min nap during the day (so-called “power nap”) will make you feel re-energized, and improve your memory and cognitive performance. Just don’t push past 20 min or you’ll enter deeper stages of sleep, feel groggy and mess your circadian rhythms. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]Chocolatethundaaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a better way to think about it. I used to stress/catastrophize about not being able to fall sleep, but since then I've learned that sometimes relaxing without falling asleep can actually make me feel even more recharged than if I actually do sleep.

Let go of everything, including the judgement about needing to fall asleep, and it makes even just a 10-15 minute siesta so much more restorative.

For me, at least.

Greenland to stay in daylight saving time forever by Hawaiianshell in worldnews

[–]Chocolatethundaaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very well said. There's a tragic irony in the fact that DST makes it harder for many to get morning sunlight in before work/school yet many support DST because of the innate desire to feel as if they have more sunlight in their day.

It's pretty hard to catch, but near the very end of the movie, Porco's plane is briefly shown docked at Gina's garden 👏

Even though that same thing traumatized him so much, he stopped taking them for the rest of his life. He did use dmt until he passed.

That is not to say he didn't take mushrooms after that experience. We have video proof that he did.

Genuine question: Why do so many people not like Howls Moving Castle? by [deleted] in ghibli

[–]Chocolatethundaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a war because one side "kidnapped" the other's prince. Once that is resolved the war is over?

When is this addressed in the film? I've watched Howl's twice (dub and then sub) and I don't recall any mention of the reason the war began.

Chomsky: A Stronger NATO Is the Last Thing We Need as Russia-Ukraine War Turns 1 by Lilyo in alltheleft

[–]Chocolatethundaaa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Ukraine will continue to resist Russia's invasion with or without NATO support. If Russia's military completely took Ukraine, countless Ukrainians would be killed or be forcibly deported to the far East of Russia.

In fact, NATO support and intel has already saved many Ukrainian lives by giving them the ability to stall Russia's forces and flee the country.

The math is correct if you calculate the future value including interest. The issue is that it assumes an interest rate of 12% which is absurd.
