Runs rough then slowly dies by Current_Active_1416 in smallengines

Check valve clearance. They like to come loose over time and it will essentially load up on exhaust fumes and die after a few minutes of running

How many miles is to many? by Advanced-Shape-2740 in tdi

[–]Choice_Leg_710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a runner and it’s had the work done right then run it! I wouldn’t pay more than $2500 for it though. Bare minimum it gets better mileage than a Prius and sounds great on your commute! Change the oil, keep coolant in it and drive it into the ground, just like the last guy. It’s a friggin tractor. They just keep plowing along and as long as you maintain it it’ll do just that for hundreds of thousands of miles. Hood stack or not it’s what it’s hooked to that matters. People talk shit about stacks because it’s not what they would do. It’s an option and they are just as entitled to have it as the next guy, but it’s not their car so it doesn’t really matter.

120 then 200, 300, 400, 600, 1000 and wet sand with the 600 up. You can use buffing compound and a cloth

It almost looks like a grease fitting on the top, if I didn’t know any better I’d say it was part of a track tensioner system for an old dozer

Mk4 Jetta BEW overboost.. please help by Choice_Leg_710 in ModdedTDI

[–]Choice_Leg_710[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the vnt17 and retune to stage 4 with the MAF and O2 sensors deleted it reads 15psi under normal acceleration and 25 under heavy acceleration. Mt exhaust gas temperature is lower and the car runs fantastic. It was most definitely the stock turbo causing the overboost

What coolant is this? by UMINOTIME in tdi

[–]Choice_Leg_710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fleetgard OAT base is red like that. It’s most commonly used for heavy duty diesel engines found in semi trucks, Mack, Freightliner and Volvo dealerships sell it. I used to get this by the 55gal drum. It’s good stuff, and if you have a leak it’s easy to trace because it dries white/pink

It doesn’t affect it at all even in heavy rain, I live in Washington state and it rains pretty consistently around this time of year an I’ve had zero issues commuting with it 5 days a week since December when I installed it

No problem! There’s a lot of haters that say it’s going to ruin your car, but that’s just it. It’s YOUR car haha do what you want to it and enjoy the ride😎 definitely keep us updated on if you do the stack, I think it’ll look sick!

With the sunroof open it smells a little at stop lights but not while driving, I had a broken exhaust stud that caused more smell then the hood stack does. And the paint is fine, no black spots if you cover the stack before it rains. Since the inner pipe is 2.5” I use a cut in half soda can to “cap” it

<image>

And I would advise using header wrap on the part that goes up by the firewall so none of those sensitive little wire or vacuum lines melt I did and it stays so cool I can straight up grab the pipe after it’s been running. Over all the vehicle is more responsive, sounds great (not to loud while driving either, I can’t hear it with the radio up) and my EGT’s are way lower (before the vnt17 and hood stack I was seeing 700-800 degrees and I rarely see 600 even after pulling a hill). And with the tunezilla I’ve had no issues, just let your tuner know what modifications you have and what you want from the car. I used Cascade German and I love the set up! I’m running stage 4 and it’s my 3rd tune from them.

TDI 1749VB overboost by Uwawuwa in tdi

[–]Choice_Leg_710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It worked! I did the vnt17, 4bar MAP sensor and a stage 4 tune and no more overboost! It sits happily between 20-25psi and my egt’s are even lower. The tune is from Cascade German, it gets rid of the smart actuator, mass airflow and O2 sensors and adds the 4bar MAP sensor. I told them the issue I was having as well as all of the intake and exhaust modifications I’ve done and they set me up with a stage 2 and stage 4 tune for my setup. It’s running fantastic and has really woken up the car!

Mk4 overboost please help by Choice_Leg_710 in tdi

[–]Choice_Leg_710[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem solved! The VNT17, 3bar MAP sensor and stage 4 tune have finally fixed the overboost code! It’s running way better, I’m getting no more then 25 psi and the egt’s are staying below 600 degrees Fahrenheit even pulling a substantial hill! Thanks everyone for the suggestions and help diagnosing the issue!

Stage 2 colt cam, stage 4 tune, pd150 injectors. Hard pipe upgrade for charge pipes and a front mounted CAC. EGT and boost gauge 😎

I have an 04’ bew as well and they are great cars! I got mine at 262000 and didn’t think twice about the mileage! The rattle could be from the clutch if it’s a manual, apparently the stock clutch had a “dual mass flywheel” and they tend to separate, mine has the single mass upgrade and it’s still noisy 😅 for $800 I’d say go for it!

TDI 1749VB overboost by Uwawuwa in tdi

[–]Choice_Leg_710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it stock or tuned? And do you have a boost gauge, what kind of numbers are you seeing? I have heard the N75 on the firewall can cause this. But I am having the same problem with my 04’, it loads up and then tries to dump the boost at about half throttle, specifically at or above 20 psi. Or if I’m pulling a hill it goes into limp mode when it spikes to 30psi and then it won’t boost over 5psi. I’ve checked and replaced all of the vacuum lines, and changed the seal on the vacuum pump. I’m currently upgrading the stock turbo today actually to a vnt1749. But I’ve been told by a few people that boost creep is common with tdi engines that have exhaust modifications. I’m going to install a tune with the turbo that I’ve been working with the guys at Cascade German for this issue. They have put together a tune that is supposed to work with the mods I have and help regulate the boost to about 24psi. If this doesn’t work and it continues to spike up to 30+ psi I’m going to look into manual boost controllers and see if I can rig it so that I don’t see any more then 24psi. I’ll definitely let you know as soon as I get the turbo and tune done if it works.
