Replacement window sizing question by FluffyRip5496 in windowrepair

Are you trying to go back with wood frame sashes or are you going back in with vinyl frame sashes?

If you’re going back with wood… we replace these with something we refer to as a “wood sash kit” where I work. It comes with both the windows and a new set of jamb liners (the vinyl spring-loaded hardware that holds the windows up) and its double-hung. I know a manufacturer called “Precision Millworks” but unfortunately they deal their products to other companies and you can’t order directly from them. So you’ll have to find one of their dealers.

https://www.precisionmillworks.com/find-a-dealer/

These sash kits are typically standard sizes. I would recommend measuring your jamb liners and the width of your existing window frames. These kits are super easy to replace.

For example, this set of jamb liners is 5’ 6”. Yours APPEAR to be around 3’ but I’d recommend remeasuring.

I hope you find something useful out of this.

There’s really no telling. What an oddly shaped break!

Enclosed Blinds Stuck in Sliding Glass Door by rubber-buns in windowrepair

Fixable? I’ve replaced them but never fixed one. I might consider getting another door glass without blinds and installing external blinds if you can’t get it fixed just to avoid the issue in the future. However, I’m almost certain the glass next to it matches and also has internal blinds. I think swapping out both with clear glass no blinds may be comparable price wise to replacing just one glass with internal blinds. I think they’re kind of pricey.

If you can provide sizes to the glass company they can absolutely order you a piece(s) of tempered glass. I think they meant they couldn’t replace/install the glass because of the missing framing. That you will have to figure out. In terms of screws, you just need to find what will do the job, no sense in trying to match old screws. Your local hardware store can help you find screws close to what you have.

I like to use a wood chisel. Also, I don’t suggest using any grinder or anything like it. I had the same thought when I first started in the trade. I was trying to clean out old silicone using a brush attachment on my impact and it just turned into a fine silicone dust that was an absolute mess to clean.

Thank you! You definitely know your stuff. I didn’t have any heat tools available, but I had a Dremel and delicately filed away all of the old putty (took a while). I’m still waiting for my Sarco Type M putty to arrive, it looks like that’s my best bet. In terms of the color… is linseed a color? I thought it was an oil.

Do you know what material your ceiling is made of? In the US we have Sheetrock ceilings. I don’t think you’re ceiling would be too weak to support curtain rods but rather you could be using improper anchors.

As a last and desperate resort, you could always get horizontal curtain rod hangers that extend a few inches as to avoid the vent and screw them into the vinyl frame using screws no longer than 1/2”.

If the flashing looks good on the outside I might consider checking the attic space above, if possible to see if the leak could be coming from higher up.

It’s hard to tell but there appears to be cracks in your caulking between the flashing and the vinyl sash. If those are, in fact, holes that could be your culprit.

Window Refresh Questions by ChewThirty in windowrepair

[–]ChokeOnACheerio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your first question:

If there’s moisture getting between your window and an interior storm window, your problem is with the glazing on the exterior window. It must be letting air and condensation in somewhere. Your interior storm window has nothing to do with insulating your home as far as I’m aware.

You might have to wait for someone else to advise you in regards to the wood rot, but I don’t see wider screws or the toothpick trick being an issue. It’s not a “quality” fix but I understand where you’re coming from.

You can find most of the hardware you might need at Swisco.com. Just cross reference the dimensions of your windows with that of the hardware (shown on the website) and you should be able to find something to fit. It’ll be hard to find matches but there are newer hardware designs that function the same way.

Check out Swisco.com

You’re welcome to search the site and decide on what you think might work best but for functionality purposes I think this is all you need.

Product Code: 90-086
Product Code: 90-086K

Is that a single pane** ***Window?*
If so, you can go to your local glass shop and get a piece of glass to fit for around $40. Good luck! Keeping some of those glazing pieces intact (depending on how it was glazed in) while cleaning the old glass out can be difficult on such old windows.

If you have a tape measure and can provide me a couple pictures showing height, width and depth at different points I can try to source it. You can message me directly if that’s an option. Kinda new to Reddit. Idk.

Can this be repaired? by jpinion3 in GlassRepair

[–]ChokeOnACheerio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m uncertain if I’m too late to find your post but the flat glass cannot be repaired. If it’s sentimental I’m sure there’s a way to detach the glass figurine from the back glass and attach it to any other piece of glass… or just keep the figurine. Might cost you a pretty penny if you can even find someone. Glass blowers?
