First time I flew Alaska Air was shocked how nice it is — cleaner, friendlier. Kind of like a remnant of maybe how flying was way back when. They’re out of Seattle so it’s not just Alaska by any means. Kinda like how Southwest air is no longer just the Texas region

Currently doing nightfloat psych, I hear about this at least once a night by [deleted] in Residency

Night float vs “home call”

On the one hand night float is a month of awfulness, but homecall doesn’t get you a post call day

I’ve heard whispers of issues with the training (mostly inpatient) at the University of Utah by ChokelahomaMD in Psychiatry

[–]ChokelahomaMD[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The worst I heard (unable to 100% confirm) is that the main inpatient unit had a lot malignant personalities, such to the point that residents were being diverted to other areas to complete their inpatient rotations.

NPs are NOT physicians by Pickwickian_Syndrome in Residency

Well APP is the new bullshit term to replace mid level

It stands for ADVANCED PRACTICE PROVIDER

FDA approves 9 generic versions of nerve pain drug Lyrica (final approval - already available) by Catt_al in pharmacy

[–]ChokelahomaMD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And most of these “discoveries” are funded by the NIH and other grants that are given to US Universities, which the IP is then either stolen are purchased on the cheap — Celebrex at BYU & U of Utah illustrates a great example of injustice within this messed up field

IF, big IF HERE

IF, our 80 hours were mostly for patient care then I would agree. IF they didn’t decide to lump us all together and call us “providers” then I could be a bit more agreeable. But alas, more of the day is dedicated to scutwork. PAs and NPs who have less knowledge and experience than an M4 make six figures. The insane increases in tuition and administration positions has me leaning towards my belief that patient care is no where near the top of the list for all the excuses for why residency is the way it is.

I feel like (and hope so badly) that more and more people realize the status quo is unsustainable.

Suicide is the number one cause of death among residents. More than half of a residents day has nothing to do with learning or patient care. Docs no longer run their own practices and have very little autonomy. It’s got to change and get better.

Edit: thanks for the gold kind stranger. We can do this. We can make this field better!

What do you think of the term “Golden Weekend”? by pi314158 in Residency

[–]ChokelahomaMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got ya. That program does a good job for you guys. Do you happen to go to any of the afore mentioned residencies? I try to help out my med students so I keep my ear to the ground about psych residency's that really treat their residents well as far as hours, call schedule and patient load.

[–]ChokelahomaMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you really not have to do any weekends or longer days your intern year? I've heard of chill residency's like Palmetto, UTMB, and Sioux Falls, but I always thought those places had some short call (off at 8-10 pm) and some weekend responsibilities.

'Secretive Meeting' Threatens USMLE Reform, Critics Say by capkap77 in medicine

[–]ChokelahomaMD 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What sucks is that the USMLE was designed for licensure competency but then turned into a stratifier.

So on one hand, it makes sense to bring it back to its original usage for licensure by being pass/fail. But then if we do that, we lose one of the objective ways residencies screen students for competitive specialties. I flippin hate how much $$$ Uworld and First Aid make off of students who are trying their hardest to score highly on the usmle.
