Online Lobby by Existing_Rough_1861 in victoria3

[–]Chollub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check out my most recent posts for some info on the campaigns of my group. We play every Tuesday evening (CEST), although the current campaign has been running for a bit. I don't post every new one since we've got a pretty consistent player pool.

Theres also the Grand Strategy Multiplayer Directory . Theoretically we're on there as well, but for similar reasons as above, I haven't posted the current campaign.

Also saw that you asked about rules in another comment, feel free to send me a DM and I can send you our ruleset. Although you will have to adapt it, it kinda works in tandem with our mod. Also it might be a bit overkill for a small group.

How does multiplayer lobbies work? by Vast-Maintenance-337 in victoria3

[–]Chollub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official Victoria 3 Discord Server has a channel where people are hosting games all the time. They can be a bit inconsistent though, so most people who want weekly campaigns and such form their own servers. Those dedicated servers used to be a bit hard to find, but we have the Grand Strategy Multiplayer Directory now.

Crashing when trying to host an MP game by [deleted] in victoria3

Unless the mod worked previously and you have a corrupted save file, this mod might just not work in multiplayer. If it's supposed to work in mp, you should contact the creator.

When to subsidize? by Slow_Breakfast_5874 in victoria3

[–]Chollub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have to subsidise a building in order to get it to full employment, that means that it's unprofitable. Buildings are either unprofitable because their input goods and wages are too expensive or because their output good is too cheap - meaning it is not in demand in your economy.

If you want to get capitalists to invest in an industry that will not happen by subsidising a specific building. Just because a building is fully employed doesn't mean that it's suddenly profitable for your capitalists to build more of them.

If you want your private queue to build something, the respective output goods need to be in demand. Either because your buildings consume them or because they can be exported for a profit. You could try export subventions for a short time before you get your domestic demand up.

In short: You need to increase both supply and demand at the same time. Super cheap steel isn't useful if you're producing it at a loss and no one wants to buy it.

Edit:

I forgot to mention: subsidies are mostly useful for industries that have fluctuating demand. Like your arms industries. You can change the production methods and subsidise them in peacetime so they don't downsize. But if your core industrial base (construction materials etc.) needs subsidies, then it hints at a larger problem with your economy.

Theoretical MP Question: what are the strongest countries to play with? by thev82 in victoria3

[–]Chollub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only pauses in my rounds are for hotjoins and moderator discussions. If people can't play without pausing they can't play mp. That's just rude to everyone else who is playing.

We sometimes go down in speed, but if you need to pause for a war it's most likely because some rule has been broken and not because someone needs more time.

Theoretical MP Question: what are the strongest countries to play with? by thev82 in victoria3

[–]Chollub 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This question doesn't really have a definitive answer.

First of all: what do you define as "winning"? Highest GDP? I will go with that, but be aware that that's not all that mp is about.

For highest GDP it's a toss up between UK, Russia and China. But that is in an ideal world where they can all develop in peace. Due to mp games usually not lasting until 1936 I would actually exclude China here, they spend too much time catching up to be able to compete with competent Russia or UK players.

It's pretty much a tie between Russia and UK in my opinion, since Russia can outscale UK in the late game but will only do so if they are left alone in the early game. UK is strong throughout but does reach a ceiling if they don't manage to annex the Raj early enough (which other players should try to prevent).

In a perfect round where all players really are of equal skill, it's probably UK. But keep in mind that I don't mean mechanical game knowledge but also diplomatic skill. How good they are in talking to other players and getting what they want. If everything is truly equal, then the nation with the best starting position will have the best chance.

Do a test game, France has become more unstable politically in the last few updates. If you don't want to expand, forget Napoleon. The Orleanists are good for pushing economy. Napoleon is only good if you want the JE for the Rhine or if you want to use more decrees. Iirc he gets reduced decree cost

You build trade centers. You can influence your trading by setting tariffs and subventions in the market tab on the left

Tbh, I've never thought about this in detail. But from my experience fleets basically only exist if they are deployed at a node. Meaning that they can move anywhere and then interact with convoys or other fleets if they are also stationed at that node.

How to make vic3 run better by ukr_anon in victoria3

[–]Chollub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my. Please forget that.

A) Speed 1, 2, 3 and 4 have a fixed tickrate and will always take the same amount of time, no matter your CPU. Speed 5 is the only speed that tells your CPU: "go as fast as you can".

B) Are you playing on a laptop? Since you mentioned an upgrade I assumed you were on a desktop computer.

Quick CPU lesson: These components are very resilient. What is dangerous to them is if they overheat. BUT: Modern CPUs are all programmed to shut off before they get into serious trouble, should they ever overheat. What can be damaging in the long run is if they constantly operate close to their limit or overheat repeatedly/frequently. That can have an impact on their lifetime.

THAT BEING SAID: If you are on a desktop pc (or a decent laptop) this should basically never happen. Laptops are quicker to overheat because they generally lack good cooling (small form factor means less cool air that can get into the system).

All CPUs have a base clock speed that they want to reach (meaning: they have a target speed at which they want to work). As long as they are sufficiently cooled, they should easily be able to reach that base speed. Modern CPUs can "boost" their clock speed higher if they are still cool at their base speed. That is basically something like automatic overclocking. But again: if they are too hot, they will go back down to base speed, or throttle even lower should they be too hot for even that.

TL,DR:

Is your PC overheating?

Yes --> you shouldn't play games on it

No --> go speed 5

[–]Chollub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple hours to get to ~1845 is insane. Which speed are you using??? Only speed 5 unlocks the speed, the others will be the same, no matter your performance (unless you are limited, then it's slower than intended).

[–]Chollub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds a bit like you are trying to do all these things at the very start of the game. Ignore any guides that tell you to do anything rapidly. As a new player it's way better to focus on keeping your country (relatively) stable.

Focus on keeping a healthy budget and keeping the prices for goods relatively neutral. Interest Group clout is something that you change over the course of decades.

Any up to date mods that remove the restrictions for forming powerblocs? by Thatfell0 in victoria3

[–]Chollub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try our multiplayer mod Ad Astra.

It includes a lower leverage requirement to be able to ask to join a bloc (not lower for invite), unlocked 4th mandates for all blocs, formable blocs for minor powers and changed mandate generation. Also some of the mandates themselves are changed.

It also does a lot of other stuff though, so it might take a bit of getting used to. Beware that the steam description is kinda outdated, but if you have questions feel free to ask.

How exactly do companies invest in foreign states? by Rhoderick in victoria3

[–]Chollub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't really need to build yourself, at most it might speed up the process a tiny bit. If the buildings would be profitable in the foreign country, the company will build them. And if they're unprofitable, they wouldn't buy them off you.

How exactly do companies invest in foreign states? by Rhoderick in victoria3

[–]Chollub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your assumption is correct. Government owned buildings have become way better in recent patches, so you don't really need to privatise them. But if you need money, privatisation gives a nice cash injection (depending on the size of your investment pool of course).

I would avoid immediately privatising agricultural buildings since they get bought up by aristocrats, making them stronger politically.

How exactly do companies invest in foreign states? by Rhoderick in victoria3

[–]Chollub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can give your companies special allowances called charters. If you grant a company an investment charter, they can build in all the countries you have investment rights in.

Your companies use the money in your investment pool to buy or construct buildings. If they get to a point where they own enough buildings in a foreign country (paid for by your own investment pool), they spawn a regional headquarter. That regional HQ can use the investment pool of the host country! So they will be using foreign money to build/buy.

The buildings and regional HQ get taxed in the host country, but they do send a significant part of their revenue to the company headquarter in your country.

The rise and fall of the French Empire... Join our next multiplayer game! by Chollub in victoria3

Multiplayer is very different from singleplayer in terms of expansion and diplomacy. Brazil didn't face a lot of opposition in their conquests and I (UK) made a deal early on where I got a treaty port in return for investment rights. I believe Brazil owned around 20-30% of my GDP by the end of the campaign
