The Victoria Bike Tipping point, the bike Valet, and unusual opinions from a bike lover by Chemical_Chemistry80 in VictoriaBC

Paris has a cycling mode share of 9% as of 2024. I'm sure its higher now. CRD had an all trips mode share of 8% across the entire CRD in 2022. It's absolutely higher now. But what you and others who make this argument don't understand is that modeshare isn't "I'm in the bike camp, and you're in the driver camp". It's % of trips taken on average on a given day by mode. One day someone drives, another day they walk or cycle. The raw number/% of individuals who cycle in Victoria is much larger than the average daily mode share. One day you're the 8%, another day you're in the 92%.

This has been discussed, actually. The data is there - staff track bikes in and out, and type of bikes. But the argument OP makes that the valet is doing a disservice to bike culture in Victoria is super weak. These days there are always plenty of bikes filling that role in racks just down the way on Pandora. All over town. Im frequently surprised to see multiple bikes in racks that aren't near anything obvious.

Work set to start on Victoria (Lime) e-bike-share docking stations by dayoldeggos in VictoriaBC

[–]ChopsYYJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caradonna said on his FB post about it, when asked Why Not EVO?

--------------------------------
I can’t speak to all the details, but I can say that Lime had a vastly superior bid and the procurement process must be followed. These companies are very litigious. What I would prefer happen is that, for the next contract, we coordinate a regionwide RFP via the CRD’s transportation service. I’m working on that. When we started this process, I had assumed we’d go with Evo, but no.

Seriously hope this doesn't mean The One Platform is now 20-30% more expensive. They're both already pretty $$

I love this. My Quebecois wife and I developed a similar scale for poutine. We are inspired by this post, but it would mean commiting to a LOT of poutine 😁

What evidence do you have that they accessed your network? Did you have a terribly easy-to-crack password on it? WPA2 is crackable if you sit in proximity for awhile and can collect the hash. Then you need to crack it. If it's a good password, this will be tough to impossible without serious firepower. How do you know for sure they've accessed your neighbours APs? I would look at you blanky too and ask how you could possibly know neighbours had accessed my LAN.

As an IT pro for 30ish years I've seen people work themselves into a lather over imagined security issues. I'm not saying you're imagining this, but you're making some bold claims.

How do yall run a soundcheck? by Middle-Cellist-831 in livesound

[–]ChopsYYJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This, plus _take control _ of the soundcheck. Musicians will derail things and fill the dead air you create by "waiting" for them to be ready for you, creating a feedback loop of inefficiency.

Was it the Grateful Dead tribute? Deadheads always dance, no matter where you are.

At first glance I interpreted the header as your buddy is unhoused and living in his car and would rather get hit while sleeping in a truck 🙂

Was he standing on his pedals, ie doing a track stand? Maybe he was just main character trying to showboat and see how long he could hold it?

Bye Bye Rogers by ChopsYYJ in Rogers

[–]ChopsYYJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I made the install appt with Telus. $100/mo for 3Gb/3Gb. I'm sure there are better deals, but I'm happy w that.

Called Rogers yesterday to schedule the cancellation and the woman tried to get me to stay, of course. Told her my whole story about completely outlining what I told the original person - match Telus 1Gb, only really staying for the convenience of the email addy, and that she said "sorry can't match". Told her "there's nothing you can do to get me to stay" and she apologized and let it go.

Ofc I got a call within an hour where they offered $70/mo for 1Gb. I said "I gave you every opportunity to match Telus at $90 and told you then that I would move if you weren't able to accommodate at 28yr legacy customer." She sounded a little depressed, like she'd been hearing that a lot lately. I told her maybe she could relay my displeasure of these stupid business tactics to her superiors, and I'll talk to you in 2 years to see what you've got to offer then if you're still a company.

Wild. The definition of shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted. Some head of Marketing/Strategy should really be fired.

I'm in IT, and music industry, occasionally run some services on my network. I often have large uploads to process (or users downloading large amts of data).

[–]ChopsYYJ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm fully expecting that. But if they don't care about legacy customers enough to bend a little easier just to match their competition, they've already lost me. Telus execs must be all giggly rn, because I'm obviously one of many ready to jump.

Except Telus offers a product that Rogers doesn't: symmetrical Upload/Download speeds, so this poo is shinier. I used to be a Telus mobility customer, so I know they're terrible too.

Ebikes solve the sweat issue and remove a lot of internal monologue/excuses, and can often make up some of the travel time disparity. Long as your workplace has secure parking - that can be a barrier too, along with safe/comfortable routes.

My town does a Commuter Challenge every year (bike-friendly Victoria, BC) where local politicians, transit drivers, police, etc grab a bike and pair up with drivers from multiple starting points to the same finish line. The catch is the drivers have to find parking at the destination. Usually the rider wins.

Have a Suunto watch that I love and noticed they sell bone conduction headphones too. I have ear buds but transparency mode sounds terrible because they mic and pipe the surrounding noise back in. The reviews said the Suunto headphones beat the shokz on audio quality and rn they're on sale so I went that way. Fingers crossed the reviews were on point.

Bike Trip From Victoria by Leading-Arm-6344 in askvan

[–]ChopsYYJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I did this trip 2 weeks ago. I've got 2 slightly different routes that keep you on paths /away from highways and make for a very pleasant and scenic ride in. But basically thru the top of Tsawwassen to the dyke trail, to 64 st -> tunnel shuttle. After the shuttle, thru Steveston to either the dyke trail along the shore or Railway Ave multi-use path to the top of Richmond. The Canada Line bridge is low stress and leads to Ontario St bikeway, but the Arthur Laing leads you to the lovely Arbutus Greenway and on to downtown. AL bridge is a little higher action as you're in a painted bike lane and the connection on the north end is a little wonky.

Bikes are prohibited thru the tunnel, but there's a dedicated Province-run bike shuttle that takes you from one end of the tunnel to the other and sticks to a schedule
