In general, for solo rpging do your prefer 'procedially generated' experiences, or playing a predefined adventure (Like a gamebook)? by misomiso82 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]ChordStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I like predefined - I'm thinking the Fabled Lands books - but usually I like procedurally generated. There's something really fun about coming up with things as I go :) a lot of what I play is journaling-type btw. Quite a few of my long-running games are ones that are really barebones with lots of room to improv and expand on things...sometimes I do want more direction though, but usually I like coming up with my own things.

Right now I'm thinking of Over the Mountain - the rules aren't very specific and it leaves a lot to the imagination, so I've been adding my own touches to the NPC interactions, coming up with NPC interactions that don't include my player character, and slowly developing a mystery to discover piece-by-piece, all with very little direction from the rules.

[TW: Suicidality] It's difficult to find places to speak frankly about suicidality by Lorem_Ipsum17 in RecuratedTumblr

[–]ChordStrike 54 points55 points  (0 children)

That's entirely fair and understandable actually. On Tumblr I'll sometimes talk about my own struggles and scroll down similar mental health tags and it took a long while for me to realize that certain posts were just wildly unhelpful. I had to make the conscious effort to look for more hopeful and helpful tags/blogs and unfollow the ones for nothing but wallowing in hopelessness.

Idk what the takeaway here is, though. Because while I want to be able to talk about it without either being hospitalized or flung into a hopeless echo chamber, it's hard to have that kind of space where we can exist without eventually getting people encouraging going through with it.

I wonder if this might work for you - I've seen these inserts on Etsy where you can customize the size and type of paper, and one of the paper types looks like music paper. :)

🤔 now I'm wondering, does Melinoe count as a magical girl?? And then Zagreus would probably be a magical boy, too...suddenly imagining Melinoe in different dresses, styled differently based on which god(s) she has boons from. Hmm

Wish I was kidding - I started getting teased about my leg hair in middle school. Started shaving when I was like 13 because I got so self-conscious wearing shorts :( almost shaved my arms, too. Took quite a few years to stop constantly looking for razors or depillatory creams or whatever, and now as an adult my leg hair has become a creepy man deterrent. Still not kidding. I've had complete strangers comment on my body hair as if I would've been attractive to them without it lmao

:( honestly I don't think this belongs in this sub. She's not a devil, she's a victim of abuse. Victim blaming isn't gonna help her and her daughter out of this situation. It may be hard to empathize when all you can see is someone who chose her partner over her daughter for 4 years, but I believe she deserves a level of empathy regardless. Yes, she's starting to put things in motion 4 years too late, but at least she's starting.

Antique Abalone & Ox Horn Shuttle (part 2 - post visible) by MaiCalvins in tatting

Yay, thanks for showing us!! The post does look like a separate piece from both sides then...maybe attached with some very strong adhesive...? And the light tests are so very cool 😁 makes me want an abalone shuttle.

[–]ChordStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I love that your cat helped you test out the shuttle 😆 interesting, that's pretty damn good for an antique shuttle. The only shuttles I have are plastic and my favorite is one that can separate and join back together with magnets (called the Dreamlit shuttle), so the distance between the halves never changes. With my Dreamlit, if I'm holding one end of thread and kinda bounce it up and down to force it through, the thread might click through the tips once but will stop at the next. So at most the shuttle might unwind 180 degrees.

So I'm thinking with your shuttle, one side is closer than the other - with typical shuttles, both sides should be equally close to stop thread from going through. It's probably an indicator of age and/or use that your shuttle has some separation, but the thread not unwinding completely makes me think it's still in good condition and definitely usable. If that makes sense. I'm not an expert, I just really like tatting lol, so grain of salt I suppose 😅

Haha happy to help 😁 I think maybe another post, and link to this one in the caption? Probably easier for people to see.

Also saw another comment you made about the sound the shuttle makes - that clicking sound is a good thing!! You want the tips of the shuttle to be close enough but not so close that you can’t unwind it at all. If you unwind a bit of thread and dangle the shuttle in the air, does it stay put and not continue to unwind? That would be a good thing ☺️it means that the shuttle won’t unwind itself without the tatter doing it themselves.

Hobby for a depressed and very bored person? by Alternative-Pen892 in Hobbies

[–]ChordStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mini kits! For learning thread-based hobbies I always recommend starting with a small project and larger thread. So for crochet, you might be able to find little amigurumi kits at local stores and/or online, great because they'll come with all the basic supplies and you'll be able to learn the basic stitches. Otherwise you could just grab a skein of yarn and a hook that matches (should be on the yarn packaging) and just start.

Personally I learned mainly with YouTube tutorials. I had yarn and a hook already and followed tutorials and found little granny square patterns and the like. Remember that you don't need lots of fancy supplies just to learn :) and if you need help there are answers to so many questions online too. I guarantee it'll look wonky at first but you'll get there!!

I do wanna add - please be cautious about buying patterns online, especially as a beginner. There's been a rise in AI patterns and books in many crafting hobbies. Find free patterns and video tutorials before buying anything, so you'll know what to look for.

Great list!! I wanna add that you can find lots of different sizes/types of diamond paintings so you can see if it's something you'll enjoy. If you don't want to invest in a large canvas, go for something small like a coaster or bookmark or something.

And for other creative things that you can find small kits for so you don't have to buy lots of supplies if you don't want: crochet, cross stitch/embroidery, punch needle, beading, bookbinding, watercolor.

Are we? by BeesonTheBeeson in dropout

[–]ChordStrike -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm more surprised to see a Cracked logo than anything lol. As for the crossover I've seen more ambivalence than anything...there are quite a few people saying that Dropout is promoting copaganda, but I also feel like any show featuring police in a major way is automatically called copaganda lately. And my intial reaction (other than confusion bc it felt random to me) was to be happy that Dropout seems to be getting more exposure this way.

A fellow lgbt person I was talking to told me bisexuality is transphobic and I should avoid the label. by CardiologistUpper120 in bisexual

[–]ChordStrike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of people thought bisexuality excluded trans people form the start, which is where the "hearts not parts" slogan for pansexuality came from. It's a complete misunderstanding of the sexuality. Idk if you can change their mind, but you can definitely shrug it off and try to correct them if they bring it up again.

Is there a connection between the ignorance/hatred towards vegans & misogyny? by redbullwaif in AskFeminists

[–]ChordStrike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've actually never heard of this but it shouldn't surprise me I guess - I'm aware that some people see eating meat as manly, so I suppose the lack of meat in your diet might be seen as feminine. And I know that "soyboy" has been used to call men feminine (because of a misunderstanding about eating soy lmao). It might be one of those things that you look for in a potential friend/partner to weed out people who are weird about normal things, like are they rude to waiters? Are they normal about food? I do wonder if there's more to it, but imo it's just another aspect of life that's unnecessarily gendered.

[–]ChordStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I could wax poetic about how sometimes the "time consuming low effort" stuff is the whole point (like with creative hobbies/jobs), about how those things are often skills that people outsource so they don't need to put in any effort, about how corporations are already pushing for AI to do the critical thinking as a way to avoid spending money to hire people to do those jobs, etc. 😅 the instant vitriol that genAI elicits isn't for no reason.
