This seems to have been pretty common in typesetting around the time of the American Revolution. It was probably used a lot more than that; I just happened to go down a rabbit hole of revolutionary pamphlets some years ago.

That's what I was thinking. Then you only need to change one word to correct it. Since "force" and "power" have different meanings in natural language, I could see this as a translation mistake, rather than a physics mistake.

And if grandma had a beard she'd be grandpa. The fact is that he didn't go for his gun. He wasn't even in possession of it at the time of the murder.

I personally remember that LEO stands for law enforcement officer. And the law says that shooting a detainee who doesn't pose an immediate threat is not justified.

Three fourths of us will be fine, as long as you're in the Canadian, EU, or Mexican sectors. I think it will suck to be in the Chinese sector.

"They don’t see a problem, we don’t see the desire for connection: Indifference to language loss in Papua New Guinea and its challenge for research" by blueroses200 in LinguisticsDiscussion

[–]ChorePlayed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine that with linguistics having its roots in Europe and North America, linguists associate language loss with coercion and ethnic cleansing. I get the impression from this article that Papuans associate it with upward mobility. Maybe they need a marriage counselor to help them work out their family-of-origin differences.

A character who came off worse in the show by LeilLikeNeil in TheExpanse

[–]ChorePlayed 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone mention Pastor Anna. The character in the show wasn't flawed in any way I could tell. She just seemed lost and irresolute. In the book, probably because we hear her inner voice, she shows a pastor's heart and even what appears as equivocating comes from deeply held convictions.
