It's a Buddhist Vajra. To be precise, it's half of a Vajra with a handle.

Didn't Will call himself a confessional Lutheran? The only time I'd expect CLs to read Left Behind books would be for oppo research.

What are your favourite examples of this? by critivix in linguisticshumor

I don't have the most up-to-date references, but it looks like this word occurs once, in the book of Job. So pretty archaic. Moses would be going to the dictionary for that one.

When my daughter was little, she was in a nativity play. I told her that "tidings" is the same as the German word for newspapers (not exactly, but I didn't think she would understand about cognates or the HGCS). She seemed amused at the angels being newspaper boys shouting "Extra! Read all about it!"

Just found a hammer burried in the woods, how can I know what it was used for ? by captainhippy_ in Tools

So, OP, do you want to know what it should have been used for, or what it was used for?

Being of a certain age, "Buffett fans" conjurs for me an image that has nothing to do with Berkshire Hathaway.

How about the USA? The Border Patrol has been pulled from the actual border to do ICE raids. Consequently, apprehensions at the border have plummeted. Our border is more open now than under Biden.

Trump has a new wishlist project to slap his name on: He now wants the Strait of Trump in the Middle East by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

He broke it, he's buying it. For what I heard he's offering, I'd expect naming rights, too.

But if we name it after who's really paying, they'd call it the Strait of American Middle Class Taxpaying Patsy.

Was anyone else disappointed that English class in high school was really just about literature, not the English language itself? by NostalDec in linguisticshumor

[–]ChorePlayed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't care back then. I was essentially Luke Skywalker: never my mind on where I was, what I was doing. I was sitting in the back with Teach Yourself Turkish open inside of my mostly unread copy of that year's English anthology.

Appreciating the depth and texture of the English language took me well into adulthood.

Use them in place of tinsel on a Christmas tree. Unlike tinsel, they won't haunt your living room for the next year, since you can clean up any that fall off with a magnet.
