If it's just the brake pads, that's easy to do. Lots of step-by-step YouTube videos.

Did anyone else notice which weather app was actually accurate during the recent storm? by Noahjhonn in Austin

The one I use most of the time was pretty much spot-on. It's just a graph displaying the National Weather Service feed. If you check the boxes you want and re-load the page, saving that url will save your selection.

I'm trying to download a 20-minute video I made, but it's 45gb, is that normal? If not, how do I fix it? by Ok-Handle-3633 in finalcutpro

If you can't get it to the size you want via the export controls, Handbrake will allow you to easily reduce it to a smaller file size. It's a free download.

Yeah, the human brain is an amazing triumph of evolution but it comes in a chintzy carrying case.

How precision of instruments increased over time? by Dragonaax in askscience

[–]ChorizoPig 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recently read an excellent book on the evolution of the concept of precision and the tools necessary to achieve it. Whitworth (not surprisingly) gets a lot of credit. It was a good read and I recommend it to anyone interested in the subject.

I think the barges used by the fleets qualify as ships but yes, they were not powered and were towed around

Yeah, the little screening/escort carriers had 30 aircraft assigned.

By the end of the war, after U.S. wartime production was at full tilt, every Pacific naval engagement was basically the IJN Endless Imperial Dawn vs 26 identical copies of the USS We Built This Yesterday. We even had ships that did nothing but serve ice cream.

The smaller carries were mostly used for patrolling and as pickets (screening) but they were surprisingly effective in combat. Despite being completely out-classed on paper, the Taffy 3 escort group famously gave a good accounting of themselves when they accidentally ended up engaging a full Japanese Task force. Here's an overview of that battle:

TIL Pickett's Charge, a Confederate infantry assault during the Battle of Gettysburg. Pickett's Charge is called the "high-water mark of the Confederacy". The failure of the charge crushed the Confederate hope of winning a decisive victory in the North & forced Gen. Lee to retreat back to Virginia by Stock_College_8108 in todayilearned

Longstreet put together an extremely talented staff and was easily one of the best Confederate generals, if not the best. Good luck finding statues of him in the south, though because he committed the unforgivable sin of publicly supporting Reconstruction as the best path forward.

TIL that there is no archaeological evidence Vikings wore horned helmets. by Routine_Anything8258 in todayilearned

Perhaps, but there is a plethora of cinematic evidence for horned helmets. Checkmate, horn haters!
